- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -2/+42Ubuntu is the gateway distro. I welcome anyone who tries Linux regardless of whether it's Ubuntu or any other distro.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34Wow, so simple a caveman can do it.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Step 1. Forget to include "???"
Step 2. ?????
Step 3. Profit - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+31It's very easy to move from one distribution to another. Why care/complain if people choose Ubuntu? They can later on change.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Wubi can be used to install Ubuntu on machines where Ubuntu just won't install. Damn fine product.
- flipt0s, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17As someone who has just done the switch. Its not so easy. The world has changed for me and doing simple things is no longer so easy. Yes im a noob, willing to admit it, but any help offered cant be slammed.
Its idiots that flame others that try to help people are the real losers. - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14It's very easy to hit the reply button. Why not do it?
D: - flipt0s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11your buried for being a fanboy of burrying fanboys
- xspinkickx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9this is good cause I cannot tell how many people just format the linux partitions and then grub messes up and they don't remember to /fixmbr.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10schestowitz is right. I'm going to install gentoo from my unbutu install this weekend. It isn't hard to jump ship, especially when the software is free :P
- grungegbunny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9and how much time did you take to try to get your Nvidia card working?
A common fix is out if you just did 3 minutes of research on google. - grungegbunny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7actually its dual booted.. so when your on your wubi'd Linux, windows is not running.
- ripper365, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I've known that Ubuntu was the "Windows friendly" Linux distro for years, but just recently found that it's actually a viable solution w/ 7.04. Over the last few years, I've installed the various "most recent" editions of Ubuntu and found many problems with the releases. 7.04, however, is excellent. It took me about 30 minutes to get my broadcom adapter up and running, but everything else was working upon the first boot of the OS. I love it. I have no reason to go back to XP... and certainly not Vista. ***** that trash.
- isaacasimov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7people are scared of doing things like that, they like the comfort of knowing that they are able to install something thru windows because it feels safe and familiar. also, some people dont know how to boot from CD. liveCDs are awesome. long live kubuntu!
- cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Wubi is great, but it still has some issues that Ubuntu doesn't have. Wubi systems can't suspend or hibernate, and also, it seems prone to weird Windows filesystem errors that leave Ubuntu unbootable. I recommend this to try, but you'll get slightly better hard drive performance and fewer issues with a full Ubuntu install.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yes, I am sure the music industry cares about insurance company mottoes.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Wubi doesn't require a partition, it's just like installing another Windows app. Wubi can also install Ubuntu on machines where Ubuntu just won't install (for instance, a machine with a malformed NTFS partition and not enough free space).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It won't.
- kmusser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6MasterThief, that is just so condescending...
- Dracura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This is a terrific alternative to dual booting using a partition. The reason, and I speak from experience, is that messing with the windows boot loader may cause your drive to get severely *****. I use Wubi, and it simply adds Ubuntu to the regular boot loader, thus not tampering with things that could potentially ***** up your system. It's just too bad that they don't have a system like this for other distros. I'd love to try them sometime but I refuse to install to a partition after my past experience, and because I don't have a spare rig to use for linux.
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4We welcome you back with open arms.
Should you choose our OS again. - sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Stick with it. Many people including myself have been there before, we understand. What helped me was whenever I felt myself getting flustered was to step back and do something else for awhile. Often times when I came back with a clear head, getting over my issue was much easier.
Remember the goal. You won't regret it. - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wait until you ready to format your windows and reinstall, then install wubi. That way you have nothing to lose.
It won't be long though. - Grapekiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You(Spr0k3t) ARE right. (I'm not a noob, but I'm no guru either) and I tried to make the switch a few years back. I tried Red Hat & Gentoo. Both distros intimidated the hell out of me. Recently I gave Ubuntu a try and I was blown away. There was a learning curve, but through experimentation and help files, I found my way. Ubuntu was the OS that caused me to cast off windows and go all Linux.. Ubuntu is the gateway drug of open source..
- ekravchenko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Using windows will mess your files more, than installing ubuntu. Give it a shot :) It's easy, great, free, free upgrades, updates, free software, etc... What do you need? It even has an emulator called wine for playing windows games.
- ClaudiuUSA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This needs to be done with some more distros. That'd be way cool.
- adude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Two big reasons: save data easily & CompizFusion, both of which work on Wubi, but not LiveCD.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3don't digg this guy down. these kinds of "problems" need to be addressed. not that it really is a problem; he probably just needed to boot "no dma" but still HP's are mainstream...
- Hickeroar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's pretty shortsighted. Gentoo was the first linux distro I ever really used. I installed redhat and mandrake in the past just for hoots, but never USED linux until gentoo. For someone with no real linux experience, I did just fine.
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4That's even better than Windows, Gndoab. I install XP on my box and it has no graphics driver, no sound, no NIC... this is all after I spent half an hour freaking around trying to get it to install on my SATA HDD in native mode. I also know if I don't install a firewall or AV before getting the NIC going, I'm likely to be bugged before I can add in the 80 patches from Windows Update.
- sepelester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Comment above is true and Dugg. Plus - this way the user is provided with the option of uninstalling Ubuntu through the familiar "Add/Remove Programs" in Windows, thus it feels completely safe to install and uninstall, without fiddling with magic partitions and boot sectors.
- xivulon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Use the latest version from the website and if you still have issues ask in the wubi support forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=234
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I know I would be out of my depth in gentoo. I like my Ubuntu install but see gentoo as the pro version, for the people who really know their *****.
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4You sick little....
- comand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2From Windows, the Linux filesystem will appear as one big binary file -- you would'nt be able to just navigate into it and delete a file... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loop_device
- sepelester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The drivers only need to read one file (the linux image file) so it doesn't matter much how fast the NTFS drivers are.
ripper365 is completely wrong in that Ubuntu is run with another OS as a host. It is not. It's just using the bootloader during init and one file on the external file system. Reads and writes are nearly native speed for that file, provided it's not heavily fragmented. - CoBLeviathan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The problem with the live CD is thats its difficult to save your settings. Some LiveCD's let you save to a flash drive, but I don't think Ubuntu is one of them. I've tried Wubi and it worked fine on my laptop. It even came with read only access to the ntfs drive. If you play around for a few weeks and decide you don't want it, you can uninstall. If you partition, it's a lot harder to go back.
- omikun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I will take you up on that
*downloading...*
wheeee now I feel like I am at work... - Hickeroar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3@ kazamx - that's really not accurate though. There are extremely good docs for installing gentoo. They walk you through every aspect of getting your system up and running and they're VERY well written. It's not nearly has "pro" as you're probably thinking. You also come out of it understanding linux way more than you had beforehand.
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i found wubi through a digg front page post few months back. and it helped me move on to ubuntu full time!
- inked, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wubi sucks
- kurupttek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My way is just put a VM and it works great
- str1fe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've had issues trying to get Ubuntu booted on my laptop, hopefully this will work.
Wonderful article...good for those frustrated with linux installations (I'm sure my case is a rare one...I can't wait to get rid of Vista)
On a side note, is Wubi compatible with Vista? It only mentions XP...it also only mentions Ubuntu, not Kubuntu, which is what I'm after. Just wondering. - ripper365, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lol Vista! I tried to use and defend Vista for about 6 months... then gave up. I'm running Linux on my Gateway 7515 laptop right now. Works like a charm. Uhm... get a clue. It was like a 15 minute install on my system and it's beautiful.
p.s. Linux works right out of the (legal) free download! - rabiddachshund, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Gndoab: From a troubleshooting p.o.v, the only thing in common is your computer. Therefore, it is the item at fault. :P
I do have to give you credit though; Vista does indeed work right out of the box...if you use "work" as a relative term. - leonreynauld, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I really dont see the point, firstly ubuntu is ridiculously easy to install already, secondly if you dont want to mess around with re-partitioning ur windows partition just use a similar software to VMware.
'ubuntu is installed within a file in the Windows file system'
if the entire linux partition is just a file in windows does that make it possible for a windows user (assuming he has administrator access) to access everything in that folder? if that is the case then i see two problems with that, firstly the windows user can access protected files and secondly someone may unknowingly delete necessary files in the folder making the linux system fail. - xivulon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wubi will be an official installer in Ubuntu-7.10.
