This has just been posted by John Roberts, one of Sugar's founders:
**********
This is the jist of what we announced with Microsoft today.
1. We will introduce with 4.5 in the May/June timeframe a new Sugar Open Source distribution optimized for the windows platform (IIS, MSSQLServer).
2. We will support the Microsoft Community License – which is very much like the MPL for this new distro.
3. No changes to core Sugar Open Source and the Sugar SPL (MPL).
4. No changes in our commitment to Linux or any reprioritization of features for the Linux platform
Basically, we are just going to offer a second Sugar Open Source distro for the windows platform for those who prefer Windows over Linux (other OS’s). We remain and will always remain fully committed to the Linux platform.
Regards,
John Roberts
Sugar - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No digg for the inaccurate and biased view of the poster.
- agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2shut with the going 'evil' ***** already
- Llan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Would it be so hard to keep your biased unreflected comments to the comment section and not to the post title and description? Or are people reading this not entitled to acquiring their own opinion?
- acidzebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2from the article:
"Over 35 percent of our (sugarCRM) customers run Microsoft Windows Server"
which means that the majority doesn't... weird move on the sugarCRM part.
Also: Microsoft has their own (bought) CRM solution, the not-often-heard-of Axapta (or whatever new name marketing has dreamed up for it this year) so I think MS's only interest would be to bury this potential competitor. - VulnoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This site is going more and more towards a MS and Apple new battle. If this post was about Apple joining with them, it would probably say that the company sold itself to the God of all computer industry, and then people would be in here battling it out over that comment.
The Apple/MS stuff just needs to go. I prefer Windows, I have worked with Apple, and I dont like it, but thats my choice and I dont let it get in the way of my day-to-day interactions with people. Just post the news people! - stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OR even..
"Hope those in question are NOT considering a career in ethical jornalism!"
I'll sack the proofreader. - kuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2SugarCRM was always evil. Check out vtiger.org for a good open source CRM.
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no digg... I can't see Sugar going evil really. I see it merely as a bigger opportunity for them to expand into the IIS field and also better produce the Outlook plugin for the open-source version of the software.
SugarCRM OpenSource is great - I use it everyday. I hope they make that Outlook plugin work better - would be really nice! - mindtrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"hey it's open source. take the source and develop it!!"
Not for long I'm sure. Microsoft will have so many strings attached to the license that no one will be able to do anything. - JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This story (and the responses to it, eg scottyg7) do illustrate vividly the difference in outlook between the free software and open source paradigms. Open source advocates have, at best, no argument against this (it increases "choice"! it may produce "better" software!), even if on a broader level it doesn't represent the "maturing" of the open source movement, but is instead an early indication of how open source will eventually be absorbed back into the proprietary, profit-based mainstream by the likes of Microsoft "embracing and extending" the open source approach for their own ends.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a couple things.
First off, according to some sources, this license applies to the windows INSTALLER only, not the CRM code.
Second off, there is no open source crm product that rivals this one. - cebbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg, Microsft isn't "evil"
- codedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because they are working with Microsoft does not make them evil - it just means that they are aware that a third of thier customer use Windows as the OS and would like to make it easier to deploy SugarCRM in windows and have it integrated with other stuff like AD.
We use Windows at work because it is the standard for the whole organisation and the infrastructure is geared around it, but for a lot of things the rest of the stack is composed of open source software since it is free and easier to customise. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey it's open source. take the source and develop it!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"No digg for the inaccurate and biased view of the poster."
Copy that. Bad title, bud. - kilodelta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey look, another topic bashing Microsoft.
lame. - Jorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"when did this become a PRO-MS website. Freaking astroturfers."
Yea right.. this is more like Slashdot Mark II. What I want to know is why so many people are making DIGG anti-Microsoft without even reading the damn story.
Are you a stupid or just a jerk? You assume that because someone point out that the title of a post is misleading they are not only pro-Microsoft but are actually being paid by Microsoft. GET REAL! Most of us are PRO-ACCURACY!
Jorgie - apo831, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's good to see that open source business models work
- enovakrss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jerbacca: not the site, the tens of thousands of users are againts MS.
Not against their products, but the way they are doing business.
g'bye, SugarCRM - AdmLangford, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1SugarCRM can be too complex in what it does;
http://www.acorncrm.com.au - jerbacca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For being a technology news site, Digg sure seems to be pretty biased against Microsoft.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AGAIN. The code for sugar is NOT going MS, just the installer that will put it on windows.
the SugarCRM code will continue to be SPL'ed
Also, Vtiger is a hunk of crap. Take a look at the code. VERY badly done - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF is the author talking about? This is probably the single best thing that has ever happened to SugarCRM.
Everyone mark this submission as inaccurate. - Fu22Ba55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad.
There's always XRMS.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xrms/
It's not as pretty as sugar, but it's got the goods. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's fork it! The old one will go to hell!
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What do socialists sitting in their parents basemest rebelling against everything need a CRM for?
- skenagle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Great response...
- hindufred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just goes to show what happens when you have lots of money and very little brains. The $ugarCRM guys show this off in quite a nice manner, all $$$ cash $$$ and very little $trategy.
Idiots - xbro, on 05/01/2009, -0/+0I think Microsoft is guilty of eating not just one but lots of baby, juvenile and grown up companies.. their second choice does seem like making living dead. Any company they do not chew on was not worth their time.
Bad karma is why some think MS is evil. Words like.. warmth, love, generosity, win-win, open source are not associated with MS, if they were lol. - theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh dear god.. I hate you people..
Jolly good for MicroSoft (emphasis on the S)! - Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IntenseTech MS deserves every bit of bashing it gets.
- p2pintel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0democritus2: so ARE YOU SAYING THAT SugarCRM is still going to offer an OS version without any strings attached? ie - MS will not control source code for sugar nor will they have a say in sugar's software roadmap? will dev for it continue under LAMP? Non profit folks on post-tsunami/post-katrina/Pakistan quake relief projects would love to know more on it.
Thanks a bunch! - Kreegie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vtiger is Sugar CRM - it is the same code base rebranded under a different name
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you guys who are bashing every thought that perhaps SugarCMS is in a way trying to get in a piece of the server app that MS has called Sharepoint? I mean, if people in mainstream think it's supported by windows and it's FREE than wtf?
Oh and if you say M$ again your a B.O.B. - JGRandolph, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0The article is ok but I wish it had addressed more about SugarCRM remaining open-source. I get the feeling that partnering with Microsoft automatically closes it up but I'm sure that is not the case. Either way I think they'll see a less than favorable response from a lot of the open-source community.
- Rosamunda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, I didn´t read your comment liddy.... hehe
- jerbacca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you VulnoX
- mattclare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CRM CTT is very cool! Sugar did so much as to be useless, CRM CTT lets you define your business. We've got almost 15000 entries in ours at work and it made life so much easier.
- olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh and Axapta is not microsofts crm solution. Axapta is an ERP solution with a built in crm module. Microsoft CRM 3.0 is a different product.
- jay2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Also: Microsoft has their own (bought) CRM solution, the not-often-heard-of Axapta (or whatever new name marketing has dreamed up for it this year) so I think MS's only interest would be to bury this potential competitor."
Microsoft built it's Dynamics CRM 3.0 product from scratch. It is 100% .NET, and the first .NET app Microsoft developed internally. Axapta ( which is now called Dynamics AX ) was purchased, but is not CRM, it is an ERP solution. It does have a CRM module, but this is not it's focus. - mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0moronic headlines like these remind me of Fantatic muslims rioting about a fuggin cartoon. People need to get a ***** grip.
- mattclare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.crm-ctt.com/ - since my last post didn't take the HTML
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i didnt't know making money was evil
I thought it was american- does that make america evil? - letmereplynow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@democritus
because actually some people have IQ's.... - Rosamunda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don´t think so...
Don´t blame them too hard... this is Sugar short explanation:
http://www.sugarcrm.com/forums/showpost.php?p=29823&postcount=26 - Grim76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see why they did it to resolve some issues they were having with the windows world, and getting a more pronounced existence to the world. However, I don't think they made the right choice with this one. Microsoft will probably absorb them at some point in time like it does most other partnerships.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a stupid title. What are you, two? Get over it. This is a good move for SugarCRM. its still open source!
Seriously, shame on you submitter. What did you think you were going to get by posting a topic like that. More diggs from open source people who dont like microsoft? Well good move since there are lots of them on digg. Nevertheless you are an idiot. - liddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shut up you wienies:
"Basically, we are just going to offer a second Sugar Open Source distro for the windows platform for those who prefer Windows over Linux (other OS’s). We remain and will always remain fully committed to the Linux platform."
http://www.sugarcrm.com/forums/showpost.php?p=29823&postcount=26 - kevrichardson, on 03/17/2008, -0/+0#1, Microsoft could care less about CRM.
#2, CRM as a vertical market was captured by Salesforce.com about 3 years ago...CRM is not what people are looking for now...
#3, what people are looking for is a platform to build what's important to them. Something that can be shared, something that is scalable and affordable and allows the company to outsource all but it's core.
SugarCRM while interesting...is just a pawn played in the larger chess game of trying to make the market leader (Salesforce.com) irrelevant. I think there are about 40,000+ customers who will stand in their way. -
