- doctordbx, on 12/10/2007, -9/+80Personally, I blame the Mac users anyway. They're the ones who run out and buy a new iPod or new iMac, MacBook, ***** every 12 months or when Commander Steve tells them too.
Don't be blaming Windows for their *****. - niallabrown, on 12/10/2007, -8/+63I have also not bought a single piece of packaging for software since starting to use Linux because everything you need is downloaded. One of my computers is 10 years old and still works great even with advanced 3D eye candy. Not even my machine from 2006 can run Vistas super BASIC eye candy. Of course Microsoft knows this and it has been proven that the same eye candy will run on windows 98 on a comptuer from years ago when programed by other people. So put two and two together. Why might Microsoft want your computer to go to trash every 3 years?
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -3/+29The argument seems flawed:
"The main problem with Windows users was that they had to change their computer twice as many times as Linux users, on average, thereby effectively creating twice as much computer-generated e-waste."
Does that account for the fact that if somebody is running Linux (in 2004, when this study is based on) that they are more likely to know how to simply upgrade a single computer part, like a CPU, instead of just buying an entire new computer? - martalli, on 12/10/2007, -3/+22I entirely agree with the premise that Linux will allow hardware to age more gracefully. Our office has a few of Dell's new Linux computers, but most of the computers in the office are actually running Linux on

- chingy1788, on 12/10/2007, -9/+25If you are a PC gamer, its not going to work, even if the popular games ran on linux
unless you want to stay behind with graphics, AI, Physics, and possibly interface/gameplay - chingy1788, on 12/10/2007, -7/+21Planned obsolescence
almost every company does it
that
and Vista isn't all about eye candy
from what I have read and heard, vista should run better than XP if your system has 2GB or more RAM, as for the processor, im not sure, anything lower, don't expect much - valkyries, on 12/10/2007, -1/+14hums I'm surprised your not being buried for that comment about macs, they all must be asleep now.
- MonkeyFit, on 12/10/2007, -10/+23I, for one, do not much care for baby seals.
- martalli, on 12/10/2007, -3/+15processors with less than 1 GHz. They would hardly be able to run Windows XP.
Now, comparing Linux users to Windows users is hardly a fair comparison. While Windows users may represent a more "mainstream" group, the Linux users might be more likely to represent a group of folks who are still nursing VIC 20's in their basements (as I myself have done). As much as they may put together a new computer by hand, they may also enjoy keeping their older computer or two going for years just to prove a point, or because every home needs its own hardware/software firewall running ipcop or a homebrew firewall.
Sorry for the nested posting, but I made the cardinal error of using a less than sign.... - doctordbx, on 12/10/2007, -0/+10E-Waste... keeping HR and OHS people employed into the 21st Century.
- Tordenflesk, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9"processors with less than 1 GHz. They would hardly be able to run Windows XP."
My dads Celeron 500 MHz begs to differ. nLite, and a selctions of simple tweaks, and it's been running for years on a single install. - Ryosen, on 12/10/2007, -2/+11I run both Vista and XP daily. The Vista machine has 2GB of RAM and a dual core Pentium. It doesn't comes anywhere close to XP's performance.
- Blackhou5e, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9By putting an 'e-' in front of it, you make it a (pseudo) buzzword and might be able to push it up higher up clueless people's agenda's :P
- Murdats, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9UT runs fast on a toaster
- method77, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9can someone please explain the difference between e-waste and good old waste?
- loconet, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9Amusingly enough, not killing seals is bad for the environment. They are overpopulating the east coast of Canada and eating all the fish (that and overfishing, inadequate licensing, etc, etc play an important part in the fish disappearing in that area).
- benitojuarez, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8People dont seem to realize that companies don't replace computers because of the os except in rare circumstances. Large corporations usually throw out computers once the warranty ends on the hardware regardless of what os it is running. It doesnt matter that the computer is perfectly capable of running any geeks os of choice at normal or even above average performance levels. The hardware is no longer under warranty so if theres a problem the corporation has to spend even more money fixing it instead of say calling HP or IBM/Lenovo etc to replace a bad motherboard in a laptop still covered under warranty.
- KewlerKid3, on 12/10/2007, -2/+10I've personally seen where a lot of E-waste ends up in China & Nigeria and its not a pretty sight. Piles of CRT's, keyboards, Dell desktop cases....Anything that can reduce the amount of crap that gets shipped abroad (perhaps maybe even corporate responsibility) I fully support. Since linux is free this makes things even better!!
- idiotwithastick, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8If some of the ***** OEM computers can run Vista basic, there is no reason a comp from 2006 can't do so; computer technology has not improved that much in one year.
- natenovs, on 12/10/2007, -0/+896% of the people in my country use computers for porn
- megaloid, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9Seconded. I bought my current Vista machine because my PIII 1Ghz/ 512MB RAM comp was finally starting to show it's age under the weight of cumulative XP updates. There is 4GB of RAM on this computer and it still lags as much as it's predecessor when performing mundane GUI tasks. I've used various Linux distros on much older hardware that exhibit no apparent lag.
- unknownsoldierX, on 12/10/2007, -3/+10You have a 1-2 year old system that sucks that bad? My 4 year old 2.8 P4 handles Vista-32 no problem. Besides that, I have 2GB of PC3200 and a crappy x800XT. I currently play COD4 with mostly moderately high details and the frame rates are decent.
- arjie, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7Why did you run UT through wine? It has a native port. I've played it.
As for the specs of a computer that probably won't run Vista special effects but does run Compiz style effects, my friend's Pentium D 1.8 (or 1.6, I forget), 1GB RAM, Integrated Video - 965 (I think, or 945) with 64MB and 1024x768. If it will run Aero, then he'll be real thrilled, so tell me either way. He bought that this year, here in India those are pretty decent. - Murdats, on 12/10/2007, -1/+8I never use disks either, open source is available for windows aswell you realise? and most of my games come via steam
- valkyries, on 12/10/2007, -2/+8They make pretty nice coats.
- jazzbeaux, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7What bonehead throws their puter into the trash every three years, or even every 5? There are tons of schools, non-profits, inner-city disadvataged youth programs, etc. that will take 'em off your hands. Reduces waste by a boatload more than a mere 50!
- schoate09, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6MY laptop, a computer enthusiast right here, runs Xp fine, and it's a PIII 850MHz with 256 MB of RAM Dell, with ATI M4 graphics (32m). Sure, I use my desktop for more intensive apps, but that laptop does a lot, and runs Xp beautifully.
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6Wow, you said 2GB of RAM as if it wasn't more than enough for any OS. The fact that Vista needs that much to work better than XP makes it obsolete. Microsoft could've done better.
- martalli, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Gosh, the Linux spirit would have been to keep your girlfriend for years without trading her in.
- estvir, on 12/10/2007, -9/+14What are the specs of your system you bought in 2006? And just to point out, if you buy a machine in 2006 that came out in 1996 it doesn't count as a 2006 machine.. now back to those specs?
- init100, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5"There are something like 100million PC's out there"
I'd say that this number should be closer to one billion. - MeatBiProduct, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Leopard runs like ***** on old hardware.
- martalli, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Well, then, I stand corrected.
- schoate09, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6Leopard runs like ***** on any older G4. It's only acceptable on G5 and the last few (1.45-1.67 GHz) G4s shipped.
- idiotwithastick, on 12/10/2007, -4/+9How the hell did this article even make the front page?
The rate of decline in article quality on Digg astounds me. Their argument doesn't make sense, for one... maybe they should give a reason why Linux computers last twice as long as Windows? - chingy1788, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5its not about Processor Frequency, its about RAM
you can have a Celeron 300MHz, and if you can put in 256MB of RAM, it should run ok, usable
when XP came out, i think the average comp as a 500Mhz - 600MHz P2P3/Celeron
with maybe 64 - 256MB of RAM
Recommended XP requirements: 300MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, XP Original should run good on 256MB RAM, XPSP2 runs good on 512MB RAM
** Unrelated part...
(I going to talk about vista requirements cause i'm bored...)
Recommended Vista: 1GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, Vista runs good on 2GB RAM
Average comp today: 2GHz CPU, 512MB - 2GB RAM
look at that, similar situation for Vista as for XP - natenovs, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5have you seen the requirements for osx 10.5? hell, even suse 10.3 runs like a dog without a ton of ram.
- martalli, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4I won't cuss you out. Windows certainly does play the big, popular games more easily. Linux can play games, too. They have some great open source 3d games, but until the major games producers pick up the platforms (and openGL), both Linux and OSX gaming will languish in comparison to Windows.
- NihilFist, on 12/10/2007, -2/+696% of the people in my country use PC's for gaming, and not consoles. Those are poll results, not just me saying it.
- aliguana, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4I can. Vista runs better on my six year old PIV that Xp ever did. so there.
(Damn, I should have that comment tattooed on my forehead, I'm sick of making it lol) - MWeather, on 12/10/2007, -1/+596% of the people in my country use computers for work, web browsing and media file manamgement, not gaming.
- Giblet2, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4vista wasa required on all computers we sell at best buy as of jan. 1st 2007. And right now there isnt a single computer below 1GB memory. Yes the average computer today has 512, but the average NEW computer we sell with vista has 2GB.
- DarkPrincess74, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4Actually I heard the elves union got kinda pissed over that so basically the seals aren't making coats anymore.
- MacParrot, on 12/10/2007, -2/+6Sounds like OzzFest to me
- doctordbx, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3But many of the replies are. :-)
- Updesh, on 12/10/2007, -2/+5This journalism is so sloppy. Refresh cycles as mentioned above are based on Hardware, in fact the biggest problem Microsoft has is adoption of software - XP was out 4 years before customers who had bought it actually installed it in significant numbers, with most running W2K. Microsoft does not drive hardware refresh, its purely accounting practices and warranty periods - this article should be taking Dell/HP etc. to task for not providing extended warranties which drives companies with hardware that has a book value of $0 to dispose of the hardware and simply buy something new. The OS that is then running on the new PC may actually be W2K or Win XP - in fact if you buy an enterprise agreement with MS, you can continue to run XP even if you have Vista and MS provide a version of Vista and XP (Everest) that both run on hardware suitable for Win 98. As for baby seals, MS does not club them - I think MS drop one copy of each version of Vista on them
- betacmag4u, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3Open Office !
- betacmag4u, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3I interface with small and medium IT departments and the most common policy I hear is "replace 25% every 4 years" that way at any given time systems are at most 3 years old which is also coincidentally the average length of service contract of the systems I support.
- aliguana, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't know, I still play Jet Set Willy on my Commodore 64.
