- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -4/+14I wouldn't have a problem with the interface if I could actually get all the elements into one large window. I hate all those floaty windows...it's hard to keep track of. And seeing my background is kinda distracting.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Guys, he's spamming that link. He's done it on several threads.
- ishmal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Amazing. Two whole comments before someone compared it to Photoshop. Why are so people so obsessed with pointing out that Photoshop is better than the Gimp? Everyone knows that. Let it go.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20Best. Program. Ever. Wonderful user interface as well, no matter what the Photoshop loyalist would say, having not spent enough time assessing the benefits of the GIMP UI (needs mental adjustment, just like the MSO2007 ribbon). For all those who are worried about the UI, which actually increases productirvity, try GIMPShop (reviewed yesterday @ http://linux.about.com/od/softgraphics/gr/GIMPshop.htm ).
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13It's not the finest in the world, but it's perfectly fine for most people in the world.
There really is a difference. Let the Photoshop comparisons go because GIMP really doesn't measure up against it.
Instead focus on the daily image editing tasks most people have that don't use a fraction of what Photoshop is capable of. That's where GIMP needs to be targetting, and that's what people enthusiastic about the software need to be discussing. - Pfhor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Probably because, gimp 2.4 will be the last release before they switch to gleg (http://www.gegl.org) for the new engine in gimp. They might want to get it as polished as possible before they rip it open and start tearing out major components. :)
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love Gimp functionality, but hate the UI
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And for this reason, I buried the spammed article.
- aracine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8yes gimp has a healing brush now and also does it better than photoshop it is in gimp 2.4 which is due out anytime, someone who is a gimp insider showed me it at http://next.gimp.org/
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.2/gimp-2.2.14.tar.bz2
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CMYK is being included now, at least in the unstable versions I believe. It's getting there.
- rdcapasso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Has anyone successfully installed this version on OSX yet? I was thinking about grabbing Fink and doing it up instead of waiting for the binary.
- luke16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there anyway i can download gimp with the new source code already in it, the site is a little confusing :)
- Nazuel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Luke you want it for Linux right? If you are running windows you have to wait for the automated installer per the link to sourceforge. Those of us with Linux can compile from source as per Baalzebubs link. =)
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are we digging a bug-fix revision with no added functionality?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Did Gimp get CMYK yet? If not, I think I'll stick to Photoshop.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But do they have a healing brush like photoshop yet?
- daftman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@inbred
I think the Gimp is designed so that you can also work over multiple monitors. Personally, I work over multiple monitors and find it is useful to have tool bars on one monitors and my canvas on another, - ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just don get this gimp guys. I'm using 2.3.14 and lately updated to 2.3.15, on Fedora 6, and they are both really stable, and much, much better than 2.2 series, with CMYK and more goodies.
Why the hell don't they go to 2.3, or 2.4 ... ? - ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah cool info. Thkx for the comment.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"This new design for the GIMP web site is still under construction. It will be released together with GIMP 2.4. Please do not spoil the surprise by publishing links to it or discussing it on a public forum."
aracine... - sroske, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can GIMP do kerning yet?
- h0ly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@aracine:
You should have put *SPOILER* tags around that link.
Bastard :) - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To post, yes. But were those bugs (such as "fixed markup of the gimp(1) manual page") effecting 199 people?
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2naw, The Gimp is WAY mucho better than photoshop...
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Because some people continue to claim that GIMP is as good or better than Photoshop when it's obviously lacking in many ways."
Let's see... one costs around $700 retail. The other is free. One is developed full time by paid developers. One is developed in a community project.
Why don't you stop complaining and help out in the GIMP project? - h0ly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's why GIMPshop should have come packaged along with every big distro.
Maybe then people could try a different GUI without much of a hassle...
There's no use in complaining about the GUI, the GIMP devels will most likely never change it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I will have to disagree. If you are on windows Paint.NET is a better choice for a free Photoshop replacement.
- Plastic3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GIMP needs to implement the most powerful transform tool before I ever install it on my new machines:
Besides Scale,Skew, and Perspective, "Distort" is the most needed tool for anyone working on serious graphics.
GIMP needs a Distort tool to be a real tool. - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gimp is great... but is still a long way from being Photoshop.
It needs CMYK and, and to be merged with Inkscape for those time you want to keep your vectors in tact.
However... there is no reason to buy any other Paint program if you don't need the full muscle of PShop. GIMP is more than enough for the average users needs.
I would call it a Paint Shop Pro killer. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@aracine
Thanks, I've been waiting years on that feature. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fi the bug is effecting you then it is plenty good enough of a reason to post it...
- CircleFusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1^^ That's why.
Because some people continue to claim that GIMP is as good or better than Photoshop when it's obviously lacking in many ways. - CircleFusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Let's see... one costs around $700 retail. The other is free. One is developed full time by paid developers. One is developed in a community project."
That only supports my point.
I would probably help out the GIMP project if I were a developer.
I'm not a developer, so I'm waiting for 2.5 (with the new engine). Before then, I'm planning on using www.PixelImageEditor.com when it hits 1.0 because the UI is just like Photoshop with most of the features that I use in Photoshop. - thelatemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gimpshop as a concept is fine, but I get the impression from several forum posts that it has become less stable than normal old Gimp.
I don't love everything about the standard UI either, but if you give it some time and consider some of the flexibility it has built in, you quickly get used to it. - shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@nbred
Um, you CAN dock all of the tool windows into a single window. PS has tool windows floating all over the place and its harder to manage them. It's easier to manage GIMP windows. What are you complaining about? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wounder how long until Paint.NET can be ported across to Linux, it is opensourced and being C# should run under mono with modifications.
I have seen some work done on it including some screen shots of it actually running a while back but nothing materialized from it and I don't think the official developers seem interested at all (They had some tenuous connection to Microsoft from memory, the source code was mysteriously taken down for a while around the time people started considering the port).
There are apparently low level stuff that would need to be ported and some parts that link to closed source dlls such as for the UI.

http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2006/May-19.html - shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I hate people whining about the UI.
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -13/+10i agree, The Gimp is the finest photo & graphics editing tool in the world!
Kudos to the Gimp Developers... - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2first uninstall your existing install of gimp, then...
1. unpack the source code
2. ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc
3. make
4. make install
5.???
6. profit!!! - ssam, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
