Since when are optimized distros a "last resort"? Archlinux (optimized for i686) is by far my favorite distro of them all.

They really didn't detail much that would help you speed up your system. I mean turning off compiz or putting in extra RAM should be common sense.

One other thing that might help, won't free any resources but will speed up application loading is:
sudo apt-get install preload

But how do I get my dedicated server to use less resources is what's important.

you dont exactly need a QX9750 and 16GB of RAM with two 9800GX2's to run Ubuntu smoothly...

This article has no credibility. It just mentions, use different applications, change the default services (the defaults are there for a reason), and basically turn off the swap file (really bad ***** idea on low ram systems).

I don't think he realized that linux doesn't use the swap file for the lulz. If its touching the swap file, well maybe you should figure out why? Maybe running 20 instances of openoffice is a bit greedy? But really, that tweak is useless.

some things ive found

set your LANG=C in the default profile .... it's amazing how much faster alot of programs run with unicode turned off
turn off ipv6 (by putting the ipv6 module in the modprobe blacklist)
turn off se linux too
look thru the /etc/cron.* directories for uneeded tasks

While there are alot of comments on here that simply say "Linux Sucks" and such, maybe explaining what you feel is wrong would help the community. Here’s what I think The problem with Linux is its supported by people with spare time, not people getting paid by big company's. So this equates to the lack of innovation, usability (GUI), and support. While I do agree Linux has come a long way, look at Linux when XP first come out 2001/2002 and compare it with today’s Vista, Linux has jumped leaps and bounds compared to windows. While Linux has a rock solid backend it still to make that extra step to make its “User Experience” better, and offer usable GUI’s that are not just a copy of something else. Linux needs more support of hardware companies to support peripherals. When these 2 things come together, then you will see the world move over to Linux.

Whenever I get the urge to spend my afternoon optimizing my Linux desktop, I just reboot into Windows...... Then I reboot into Linux again..... Then I notice that unoptimized it still boots up 4x faster so I feel better and do something else with my day :)

Yes Linux has come a long way. Yes it still has issues. As noted the wireless has issues, I myself recently encountered not being able to access an open network with no encryptions of any kind, Ubuntu refused to log on - of the three Dell 1501s and one Dell B130 the 130 can log on to any network while one of the 1501's can log onto most networks, but one of the others can not log on to any open networks (strongly suspect the Broadcom 43xx wifi device. While some think that most devices are supported I would like to ask them to point me to a fully functional and Linux friendly portable document feed scanner under $150. Still have a little ways to go but Linux is getting there and I can not wait.

preload is a pre-caching tool found in Ubuntu and Fedora repositories (haven't checked elsewhere, you can find source here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/preload). It's like Vista's SuperFetch, except it's been out much longer.

I don't know FireFox use more memory than Konqueror.
I will try change the default browser from fox to konqeuror.
