- lukas88, on 01/11/2008, -1/+27A PCIe is generally used for 3D cards, which are generally used for gaming, something that will be disappointing on linux. As for the optical drive, as long as it has a USB port, I am sure you can pick one up on the cheap.
As long as you will be sticking with linux, this is more than enough. Generally, I have noticed computer performance is greatly increased in Linux compared to windows. Hell, even the battery life on my laptop was increased by like 50% using ubuntu.
For internet browsing, word processing, communication, and just about 95% of what people use computers for these days, this guy will deliver. If you are interested in popular 3D games, you will be disappointed. - baalzebub, on 01/11/2008, -4/+27with no place to put a CD/DVD drive this will be disappointing, i will not buy one unless it has at least one slot to install an internal IDE CD or DVD burner...
- chris9902, on 01/11/2008, -0/+20If you're a gamer I doubt you'd be looking a $199 Linux computer.
- tomj88, on 01/11/2008, -1/+20what for $199?
- Aitese, on 01/11/2008, -0/+12Then a $200 Linux box wasn't on the cards either way then...this was not made for gaming so why complain that you can't game on it?
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+11Glad you posted this. I was wondering what color you would get......
- john2kx, on 01/11/2008, -2/+11What is this "CD" you speak of, sir?
- Sub7, on 01/11/2008, -3/+11You'd think that NASA could afford something a little better than this.
- sjorsvb, on 01/11/2008, -2/+9It's remarkable that the $200 computers look much fancier than the average $600-$800 machine, makes me want to buy one :)
- chronically420, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7sheesh i hope it at least has usb. not like you cant plug an external burner in it if it does have usb.
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/11/2008, -1/+8$200 != gaming rig
- NoCt1, on 01/11/2008, -1/+8Hence your brief exposure to the outside world. And that 5% is spent on digg?
- andycr512, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7Heck, you're lucky to get a decent iPod for that.
- shredswithpiks, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6still using CDs in my car :(
- cabazorro, on 01/11/2008, -2/+8Every time a cut, cheap, pc is shipped without MS Windows pre-installed a MS angel looses his/her wings.
- rockefeller2, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7You must have a real lack of activity in your brain, if that's all you have to contribute to the thread.
- Burn, on 01/11/2008, -2/+8Open/Stream an MP3 file whilst doing work or browsing the internet?
- roodammy44, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7You still use CDs for music?
Where do you live, the 90s?
I don't think I've used a CD for the last 5-6 years since I bought my first 10GB player - cawpin, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5That was the first activity in a year. It freaked him out so he had to get it out of there.
- Protoss, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5It only said it didn't have a PCI-E slot, so a regular PCI slot is still a possibility...If it does have a PCI slot this is definitely my next Mythbox.
- bzaks, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Did anyone say Cluster PC?
- peestandingup, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5Usb? Firewire?? What kind of video-out??? Wireless, ethernet, or both????
Yeah, those are some specs. - richbradshaw, on 01/11/2008, -3/+7Why would you need an optical drive?
Don't you stream your video/music? Who actually uses CDs and DVDs in PCs nowadays...
To install linux etc just use flash drive. - someguyouknow, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5I suppose an external one will work. Not the best option but could work.
But with no expansion slots, it would not be much use to me.
This would have made a perfect MythTV box. - cawfee, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Up the RAM and you have yourself a neat little home media server for cheap. I like the current trend of efficiency over power; more focus on what you can do with current hardware instead of fitting every machine with as much junk as possible.
- infotech1, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Im sure your loving linux, but 50% more battery life is complete BS.
Anandtech or one of them big sites, did a comparison of XP/Vista Ubuntu 6.06 6.10 and 7.04, turned out there was hardly any difference, and 6.10 came out on top of them all. - thewump, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4An attractive option as a media center, but of course, you're going to want an optical drive for a media center to rip dvds.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Or if it had a DVD drive...
1. Put DVD in drive
2.Profit. - GiggleStick, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4They're kinda like records, but a little smaller and shinier.
- fak3r, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4"Shuttle also says there will be a $99 barebones version of the KPC."
Sounds like a new server on the ch3ap, and hey, this one I might not hide in the basement! Anyone know how many HDs you can jam in there? - Aitese, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5You truly think that most people who listen to music on their PCs do so via CD?
- thewump, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4u are like so dee mentid
- Prez, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3That doesn't come with a CPU, Ram, or HD, so no it is not a better deal.
- iLemon, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3hackintosh is a computer that you build to run OSX.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3No, do what I did for my mother this xmas and pick up an already existing $199 Everex gPC. The OS isn't bad, the only problem is I had too much trouble getting that ***** search box off the desktop and doing anything admin-related. Probably built as a feature so people won't screw up their *****. What I did wish they'd have made clear is there is ABSOLUTELY NO WIRELESS SUPPORT. so yeah, I ended up biting the bullet and for ease of use dumped xp sp2 on it (It was for my mother, after all, otherwise I might have tinkered with ubuntu feisty) and it runs like a charm.
Long story short, just as good but comes with an optical drive. Just no monitor.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - Abominous, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3I really dig the case.
Would be cool if you could get your own logo on it. - ldog, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3It doesn't NEED one, but it would be nice if it had a slot for a DVD drive. If i had this next to the tv as a mythtv box, I'd like to be able to pop in a DVD movie now and then. There'd be no reason to have separate DVD player.
- tensider, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3I miss my weighted companion cube. We had some good times.
- crossmr, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3if a barebones can be upgraded with a core 2 duo, then yes.
But without the PCI-E slot, then no.
CPU socket and PCI-E slot are really the only things holding any machine back from being a "gaming" machine. If the option is there for a gaming CPU, then the graphics slot is really the only thing holding it back. - crossmr, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3yes, tucking your PCs away in a close space is an excellent idea for their longevity..
- digitalarcanum, on 01/11/2008, -3/+5mac minis are over-rated.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3It's because it's an extremely cheap, very small form factor machine. Think Mac Mini, but not $600 dollars, of course not as powerful either. Most people are looking towards this as a Media Center, or some other use that incorporates the small design. It's not meant to be a desktop replacement, although you could get the barebones and make it.
- bilbravo, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3The buzz is about a cheap, neat looking PC that will be great for just casual use. Perfect for some people. Obviously, not for you. Get over it?
- iLemon, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2I guess he will have to check his ass for the specific setup. It sounds like lukas88 maybe had a combination of a bloated Windows installation and some type of indexing service running. Then switched to Ubuntu.
- fak3r, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3we're not, we just act like it.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3Well the barebones kit can support C2D, so it's entirely possible to be a gaming machine, if the barebones kit also has a PCI-e slot. I just really wish it had an optical slot. I can put an external drive on it, but then it loses a lot of it's compact and portable appeal.
- manofdestiny, on 01/11/2008, -0/+22008 seems to be the year of the cheap PC or a shift to the paradigm of the "PC + Internet" as an appliance. I hope there is a new trend where PC upgrades will be delegated to the hardcore gamers only. Now us console gamers will stop feeling like we are missing out because we don't have a $4000 water-cooled power plant that allows us to see a palm tree explode into splinters in the most realistic way possible! Do not get me wrong, I love the graphics on a PC but as a gamer I cannot afford to keep up with the constant upgrading!
- ldog, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2True, but the AMD version of what he just pointed out is only $159 and comes with a gforce 6150 chipset and tv out options. You can add much a better CPU(AMD 64 X2) and the same ram and hard drive as the Shuttle box for about 105 bucks.
The Shuttle box is definitely a great deal, but it's just slightly lacking for me as my next small form factor mythtv home theater pc. - rothgar, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2anyone else thinking of MythTV for one of these like I am?
- lolinyerface, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3There are MS angels? Ah, so thats why there are BSD Devils.
