- firefox15, on 08/18/2008, -3/+80Maybe I'm just too new to the Linux crowd, but I thought everyone used Vim nowadays . . .
- tommyhat, on 08/18/2008, -2/+41VIM is new now?
I've been using vim for years. Welcome to computers, kid. - cgibbo, on 08/18/2008, -3/+40WOW!!! VIM!?! How new and amazing!!
In 1991. - newanalog, on 08/18/2008, -2/+35The article is dated 19 Aug 2008. That is interesting because today is only 18 Aug 2008.
- buddyw, on 08/18/2008, -1/+28I use vim on all of my servers, and at work where I use windows. The learning curve is steep, but after you get the hang of you can do amazing things with a script or a log file.
Some of my co-workers use Notepad++ in windows for parsing logs, etc. It's easier to use at first, but it doesn't match the speed and power of vim with an experienced user.
:wq - bitweever, on 08/18/2008, -0/+25Next on Digg: C++, the new C?
- gamerscalling, on 08/18/2008, -0/+23Ditto. I read this thinking there was going to be a new Vim.
- trafficlight, on 08/18/2008, -2/+22According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vim_(text_editor) , VIM was released for the first time on November 2, 1991.
Glad to see IBM is totally hip and cool and otherwise not square. - CrackyJSquirrel, on 08/18/2008, -2/+20Ah the old editor wars.. Emacs vs Vi... I miss the good ol days.. :(
- martyFREEDOM, on 08/18/2008, -2/+18I do all of my text editing with sed.
- santaliqueur, on 08/18/2008, -0/+14At least we know what the future holds: A better vim.
- drjones78, on 08/18/2008, -0/+13Yea, strange title... Vim is new and improved? It's really just improved... not really so new anymore...
- manacit2, on 08/18/2008, -21/+34NANO
- mroboy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+12I use sed and awk for parsing most of my logs, but I like things simple. shrug
- myFriendDerrik, on 08/18/2008, -0/+12One of my favorites, the title tag reads: "Real programmers set the universal constants at the start such that the universe evolves to contain the disk with the data they want."
- treed, on 08/18/2008, -2/+13In your timezone, perhaps.
- arvinddeshpande, on 08/18/2008, -1/+11EXPECT............
- Paranoidmarvin, on 08/18/2008, -3/+13I don't get vi, I tend to use nano or pico - they are more simple and good enough for what I need
- chedabob, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10Heathen!
Just kidding. I like Nano. Sometimes I just want to edit a file, not play finger-Twister with the keyboard. - strictnein, on 08/18/2008, -5/+14No kidding. Heaven forbid an editor is actually easy to use.
- Elite1789, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9Repent heathens! Your evil ways must go no further!
PURGE THIS TOPIC WITH HOLY FLAMES
(remember that is M-x 'load holy-fire')
//end sarcasm - kreativenaim, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9This is where the flamewar breaks out.
- diggB, on 08/18/2008, -0/+8vi/vim - no mouse required, available on all flavors of Unix/Linux.
- talonh, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7Chainsaws work best for logs.
- kpdvx, on 08/18/2008, -1/+8This article is about a decade late--next we'll be hearing about how cool X11 is
- ePuck, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7lies
- link2009, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7There is no new VIM you goddamn idiot. VI the original editor has been around since forever.
Why are you so quick to judge others when CLEARLY you're the child in this scenario? - fadetoone, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7Indeed, VIM has been around for a long time. It's up to at least version 6.3.whatever, if the machine I'm on right now is any indication.
- GiggleStick, on 08/18/2008, -1/+8If you type alias in a shell (assuming you know where it is), you may see this:
alias pico editor-for-dos-retards
Pico's fine if you're a noob, but you need to graduate to a real text editor eventually. - enantiodromia, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7great, i can finally stop using echo, touch, and dd to edit files!
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7New and Improved vim editor...
vi improved improved? vimm? - Tunguska, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7Mistake, dd this post please Digg. :wq
- ePuck, on 08/18/2008, -2/+8Noobs use emacs. Pros will use vi/m.
- gonrada, on 08/18/2008, -2/+8Pfft...
Real linux users are flexible :) - Stalks, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6"Vim is a text editor first released by Bram Moolenaar in 1991 for the Amiga computer." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vim_(text_editor)
- morninglorii, on 08/18/2008, -2/+8This article says it's from August 19th, 2008 - in other words, tomorrow. At the same time, it calls VIm, a text editor that was released in 1991, "new and improved". IBM has finally done it; they've managed to create an article that is horribly outdated and from the future at the same time.
- VAXcat, on 08/18/2008, -3/+8Perl is for parsing logs...
- ePuck, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6:%s/Adam Cormany/Fail/g
- lemur, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5Where c = 1, c*2 == c+1
- falafelkiosken, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6emacs is a complete OS without a working text editor
- potterboy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4Early Edition
- Rivetgeek, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4*cough* try /g
- treed, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5Unless, you know, you live on the other side of the dateline.
- Dylson, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5My head is gonna asplode.
- pandaro, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5well, if you're not willing to learn vi (it takes a whole ten minutes to learn equivalents to everything pico can do), be sure to use nano / pico with -w to avoid breaking files.
- MadHarvey, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4It may not be new, but it deserves a Digg story everyday. Its my single favorite thing on my computer. It incites that instinctual good feeling that humans get when they are using a well made tool.
- kholburn, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4No, that'd be C*2 .
- GiggleStick, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5I'm writing one. I call it "Vimim". It'll be great.
- talonh, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4I guess someone isn't into squirters.
- jmichaelx, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4Dude, I know you may think that everyone uses Ubuntu or one of its variants, but that just simply isn't the case.
