- cyberorg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Yeah, and miss all the great things the distribution brings which no other distro provides.
Honestly, there is no other distro that comes close if you talk purely in terms of executing technological innovations(compiz, xgl, build service, 1-click, kiwi etc) and the polish with which it is delivered to the end user :) - gbj13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I agree to the comment by cyberorg. I have been a Linux user for the past 6-7 years. Most people have a favorite distro, but after having tried Gentoo, Slackware, Red Hat, Mandrake, I realized that suse is on the bleeding edge in terms of innovation, quality and style. Therefore it is a joy to use, at least for me.
- polyGone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I was using openSuse, since it was just Suse. Albeit I am no guru, but I ALWAYS hated their package manager. I never realized it didn't have to be like that till my friend let me fool with his laptop running feisty, with synaptic. It just worked. It was what made me make the switch.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2> "Sax" (their graphical configuration tool) will always use XGL. But that is when Sax work. Want to avoid XGL ? then avoid Sax.
That is just completely false. If you enable Xgl then it is used, yes; if you don't then it isn't. How much simpler could it be?
> Why is that such a big deal ? Because it takes 5-10 minutes to be able to do anything with that package manager, when it needs your conformation (if dependencies does not come in its way) you will forget about it.
It adds four, 2 of which are the official main ones that you should have anyway. If you don't want them refreshing on PM start-up, then just disable that option. Easy. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If one wants to enable 3d effects (Compiz) in Sax, it will use only XGL. Even in OpenSuse wiki steps mentioned to enable Compiz without XGL does not involve Sax.

It was still slow as molasses after disabling the refresh option. Package Manager is the only reason i have dislike for this Distro.
p.s. I tried rc2 maybe rc3. - laskagifts, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Bye, Bye, Ubuntu....... Hello openSUSE 10.3 !
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Well there are many things to like in 10.3, but the package manager was bad enough for me to remove OpenSuse.
Another thing that may create trouble (that took me a while to fix) , is "Sax" (their graphical configuration tool) will always use XGL. But that is when Sax work. Want to avoid XGL ? then avoid Sax.
Install few applications from their "One Click Install" and that will add too many repositories.
Why is that such a big deal ? Because it takes 5-10 minutes to be able to do anything with that package manager, when it needs your conformation (if dependencies does not come in its way) you will forget about it.
(Imagine zypper asking yes or no, hidden in yakuake).
Anybody planning to try this distro, don't waste time simply setup Smart package manager.
Or better avoid OpenSuse. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1SUSE is Abusive Monopolist approved!
