- Jerky1312, on 11/01/2009, -1/+298Dugg, but I'll believe it when it happens.
- unitedkronos, on 11/02/2009, -2/+100Skype integration with open source IM clients like Pidgin would be great, and a move like this would help projects like Skype Portable as well. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/skype_portab ...
- tofagerl, on 11/02/2009, -3/+90Thank GOD - I hate having a separate Skype client. All other protocols are included in libpurple.
- morepowerr, on 11/02/2009, -0/+66I will believe it when it happens. Till then just useless talk.
- innovati, on 11/02/2009, -2/+48"Talk is cheap. Show me the code. "
-Linus Torvalds (god of the nerds) - strangeman, on 11/02/2009, -3/+43Here is an official statement from Skype:
http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_o ... - mkriss5681, on 11/02/2009, -0/+31Hopefully this will improve Skype hardware. Right now the hardware phones are less available than they were two years ago. It's like Skype has given up hardware. Skype should be making a killing selling phones that are ethernet or wifi based. They should be killing vontage and magicjack.
- talonh, on 11/02/2009, -1/+29meh, open source UI. Likely meaning the protocol is still closed, meaning not nearly as big a deal
- PinkyTheWinky, on 11/02/2009, -3/+27I think this is a typo/misunderstanding or misinformed employee. Skype loves their little proprietary stranglehold on voip. I think if skype were to do this there would be some sort of public announcement as it is pretty big news.
- innovati, on 11/02/2009, -1/+22I'd love to see any decent video protocol be used in libpurple!
- nullmind, on 11/02/2009, -1/+18Agreed, and I don't see a source from Skype
- geoffp, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15I have read elsewhere that what they're open-sourcing is basically just the *client*, which would include the UI and bits that deal with cameras, mics and speakers; the protocols and codecs will likely remain closed in a binary blob.
I think this a) makes it more likely to happen, and b) makes it somewhat less cool than it sounds.
Still very good news, though. - topapito, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13I don't know about the US. But here in Europe, I purchased a Skype phone just like a home wireless. It even plugs into my land line jack so I can use both Skype and the land-line. Coupled with the world calling package at 8.95 per month, my phone bills are now at or around 100€ per month compared to 300€ before. Awesome!
- RobotBuddha, on 11/02/2009, -1/+13Sadly, I'm skeptical about this as well. Which is unfortunate, because the title made me really happy for a few seconds. Skype's great on windows and osx, but tends to flounder a bit everywhere else. It'd be nice to just do some tinkering with things like pulse support.
- bradleyland, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11But but but... "customer service" said so!
- insanebrain, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11... and some dub-asses are finally starting to believe.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10Your phone bills are still a lot of money!
- bradpitcher, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10This is NOT good. I'm sure the protocol will stay closed source, and that's the REAL problem.
- jadrian, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11No
- ethana2, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8This would make my entire month.
- javaroast, on 11/02/2009, -3/+11No this is OMLX spamming his crappy blog. Look at his submissions all the same linuxcrunch. Making up stuff to try to get traffic
- kazamx, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Story has been updated:
Update: we've contacted Skype.com to clarify this issue and we got this reply:
"We appreciate our user community's enthusiasm and realize this is something they have been wanting for a while. We realize the potential of the open source community and believe that making Skype for Linux an open source application will help to speed up its development and enhance its compatibility with different versions of Linux. While it is our goal to make Skype for Linux source code available to the community in the nearest future, we are not at a point to disclose an exact release date yet." - OMLX, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7They don't own the protocol. Joltid does.eBay didn't receive the rights to the protocol when it bought the Skype business.
There's a legal battle still broiling over the core of Skype, and nothing major will be happening until that's been settled or been to trial. - inactive, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7I doubt if the story is true. But if it is truely open source; I will be very happy. Skype has not developed in last few years, and giving it to open source community will certainly be a great idea. We will see lots of innovations in the voice area.
- waspbr, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7has anyone verified this? have there been any announcements from skype?
- drr104, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6http://ofaurax.free.fr/blog/index.php5/2009-10-31- ...
Looks like the source, there's not much more info though.
Would be nice if it turns out to be true, but I'm not holding my breath... - Culyt, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5That sucks, but it is still useful.
We can take the closed bits of Skype and plug them directly into things like Empathy, Pidgin, Astrix and so on.
Might not be legal or whatever, but then again people watching 99% of videos under Linux aren't either (yeh there are some legal alternatives like the offerings from Fluendo, no one uses them, it is different for companies selling products though).
I kind of wonder why there isn't an OpenSource version of Skype available anyway. EULAs aren't binding in many places, and there is nothing illegal about reverse engineering even in the US (provided its done clean room style).
Maybe we can do it in such a way that bypasses the NSA backdoors that Skype where required to install to comply with wiretapping laws. - JamesKond, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5And when the hell is 40 dollars a month cheap vs 0 dollars a month for skype? sorry I'm missing your point.
- itwadi, on 11/02/2009, -2/+7Please see the update !!! It seems it is true.
From the update :"We appreciate our user community's enthusiasm and realize this is something they have been wanting for a while. We realize the potential of the open source community and believe that making Skype for Linux an open source application will help to speed up its development and enhance its compatibility with different versions of Linux. While it is our goal to make Skype for Linux source code available to the community in the nearest future, we are not at a point to disclose an exact release date yet." - ZeMoose, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5Dugg you up, but I have to admit I do kinda dig the Skype client interface.
- Zippo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5This would be so amazing... just so long as apps like Adium and Pidgin can successfully integrate all the important features of Skype. One of the biggest problems with Adium is the lack of voice and video chat.
I just wish there was a cross-platform, multi-protocol open standard for video/audio chat. - milkmage, on 11/02/2009, -3/+7Erreur 500 : Serveur en vrac
Apparement, le serveur Free.fr qui héberge mon blog est à la ramasse...
Merci de repasser un de ces jours.... :) - nofx1510, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Have you ever called overseas with a cell phone, not as cheap as a voip based solution. Unlimited cell service is nation wide, not world wide.
- bbbreak, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_o ...
If he just recently updated it, then you wouldn't have seen it, but he linked us to that for Update 2. It's on skype.com's website servers, so I'm guessing it's valid and truthful. Seems to be true in my opinion. - x713, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5Not nearly as a big deal but a big deal it is. If they honestly have a closed library that we can use to develop around, well then that is great. Anybody can use that library to integrate into their programs. I absolutely love open source and I am very much an advocate of free software, but I don't think I would mind using a closed protocol, one which we already have open source alternatives, in which we can use for development.
- noisymime, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Its not an announcement, but seems official: http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_o ...
- Lylelanley32, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Can't be the only one to glance over and see Skynet will be open source.
- cowai, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4http://imo.im - Meebo, but with Skype too.
- madar, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4While a bit far fetched based on this article, if Skype opens up it's client code it doesn't mean much beyond community sourcing development for their client (this would be good for them as well as consumers). If you're thinking they would ever open up the patent encumbered communications protocols they use, think again.
- sej7278, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3as has already been said over on slashdot.org its only the gui thats going opensource, not the codec, encryption, protocol etc.
the problem with this kind of not-quite-opensource is that programmers won't bother with it, so nothing much will come of it - its not as if you're going to be making skype calls from pidgin (gaim) or ekiga (gnomemeeting) any time soon. - thebigkevdogg, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_o ...
GUI will be open source project, protocol will remain closed. - innovati, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3are we talking Skype Multi-cam chat coming soon? lets get on this people!
- nofx1510, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4Agreed with blasteker, setup a pbx solution in your house with ip base phones and you can spend about 2 cents per call no matter how long you speak because the only cost is getting a connection back to the PSTN, also incoming calls are free, this doesn't mater where you are in the world because the IP lines are already in place. I spend no more then $10 a month and this includes calling from America to china at least twice a week, my own telephone number (The biggest part of the bill $5.95/month), and e911 location.
Check out 3cx.com (Windows) or asterisk.org (Linux) - puzzud, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3I'm not sure how this will all pan out. They will probably open source some things but not all. I might have been excited about this a year or two ago. A little late... Google Voice is giving Skype a run for its money now.
- sark666, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Well, I sure hope they never kill vonage, not I'm a fan of them either, but at least they use SIP (the standard for VOIP). You should never root for the company using a proprietary standard, no matter how convenient, cheap, or neato you currently think it is.
- awhiteflame, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Except that it's actually a 32-bit environment. If you managed to get it working with 64-bit QT libs and such, I'd be very interested to hear how.
- ramilehti, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Wake me up when they open up AND fix the protocol.
I will not use Skype before they do.
There are other protocols that offer better security. - FormerBabby, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Your 4chan is in another castle.
- bl4k3r, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3There is an official statement from Skype: http://share.skype.com/sites/linux/2009/11/skype_o ...
- atruevoice, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Is this cause they are shaking in their boots from the news of Google acquiring Gizmo5?
