- nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I used YDL on my old eMac easily until I the day I sold it, so I have no idea what you are talking about on eMac support. I do know that it made you use the text installer, but other than that I had no issues!
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4OutlawSamurai shows some good PPC distros, there is also Slackintosh...
- nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True enough, too many people talk like Ubuntu is the only Linux for PPC macs, and they need to know that is not true. Ubuntu of course tends to be more bleeding or cutting edge that the latest PPC Debian distro, and Fedora of course is bleeding edge, and Yellow Dog Linux is cutting edge. Not sure on Gentoo since I have never used it myself. That said, switching from Ubuntu to any distro should be easy enough as they have more alike than different. It is just in my experience that on PPC, Yellow Dog Linux is the best choice IMO.
- OutlawSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And there's also Fedora Core, Debian, Gentoo, etc.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I agree and if that person is used to Ubuntu on a PowerPC platform then they would find Debian to be comfortable as Ubuntu is based on Debian. Fedora and Gentoo work very well as well, so people aren't left in the dark just because Ubuntu isn't going to have a PowerPC version.
- Termina, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2And yet YellowDog Linux still has ZERO support for eMacs.
Ubuntu had to drop it because while I'm sure quite a few PPC users like to use Linux, few of them submit patches or custom drivers. Ubuntu wants to be able to say "We support -insert architecture here-, and all you have to do is pop in a CD and it'll work."
PPC has never been at the point where that is possible for all machines; even older PPC hardware still isn't fully supported.
