- stiankarlsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65Hey, I'm the guy who owns the blog.... the guide is gettin kind of old, however, I have posted another one that's up to date, giving you the latest...
new guide:
http://justpretending.net/wp/2006/08/14/new-and-improved-enable-xglcompiz-on-ubuntu-dapper-drake/ - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29Stupid lamers! I ought to block your whole subnet.
I am root! - Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14they are in universe i think but this guide isn't that good gnome-window decorator isnt that great you should use the beerorkid repository and install with cgwd that allows theming and other advanced themes the ubuntu packages are old.
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Wow even the author of the blog thinks this link is old.
Go Digg! - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10These packages are a snapshot of xgl/compiz from about four months back, and with the pace of development of both technologies this makes them less stable, slower, less compatible and means they have a lot less features & plugins. I would strongly suggest just spending an extra couple of minutes following one of the ubuntuforums guides.
- Prospero424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Or you can do it the REALLY easy way with the test version of Automatix:
Follow the instructions for installing automatix (adding the repository and the gpg key) here:
http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation&Itemid=38
Then simply enter "sudo apt-get install automatixbleeder" into a console.
Automatixbleeder will now appear in your applications. Just open it, check the XGL/Compiz box, and let it do its thing.
No, this will not work on the AMD64 version of Ubuntu. Yet. They're working on it as we speak. Yes, it will work for either ATi or nVidia cards. Yes, it works for both Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Yes, this is a test version, so be careful and backup first. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Agreed. Ubuntu - good distro. Some of it's users - annoying as hell....which is my main gripe.
I'm in no way a Linux "guru", but I have been using it for quite some time and have tried 10+ distros. What pisses me off is that 90% of my postings on Digg get buried by 15 year old "I just successfully installed Ubuntu yesterday on the 15th try and now know more than you" users who have no idea what they're talking about.
Such is life though. - pigeonor, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18people dont use ubuntu to get the sense of eliteness (now to go bitching how that is not a word). they use it because it is easy, and it is probably one of the best moves for users who are trying to pry themselvs away from XP. I have tried using Red Hat, Mandrake, Slackware, many times over a span of many years, and still end up going back to windows, just cause it is easy, but not till Ubuntu came out, was i confident enough to make that permenant move, and i have been running it with plenty of confidence.
If all you are trying to do is stir up conversation, then you get an "A" for effort, but we really dont want to hear it anymore. If it is cause you get made fun of at school for being an ugly nerd that resorts to his mommy's nipple to make himself feel better, then move away from the nipple, suck on the thumb, and shut the hell up.... - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.gnome-look.org for themes after you get it working
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, it's getting easier and easier to get this work. Hopefully it would be by default soon.
- pigeonor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Phocion55
I couldnt agree with you more about those "15 year old "I just successfully installed Ubuntu yesterday on the 15th try and now know more than you"" i too have used linux on and off for many years and am annoyed by those type of people. When i first heard word of Ubuntu on digg, i checked it out, and read the message boards, to get a sense of it, and when i realized just how easy it is, i ran the live cd, and was just amazed.
am now a full fledged (not-so-elite) Ubuntu user - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Total time used to compile and configure a Gentoo system to my liking: 50 hours+
Time to install Ubuntu with the same features: 5 hours
I still have Gentoo but I like using Ubuntu for actual work. - Napalm05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With Automatix Bleeder it is just about that easy. Open up automatix bleeder and check xgl/compiz box, hit ok, restart x and you are done.
http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Automatix_Bleeder - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Don't get me wrong...I hate Ubuntu specific articles....but Dapper Drake (along with Kororaa) has been one of the driving forces behind XGL. And XGL is sweet so I'll allow it. Digg++.

J/k maybe? - mwales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't forget Suse!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4how about an "install xgl" button, you click it, it installs, restart x and done? or would that be to easy?
- Mnemonicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't suppose any of this will work on the AMD64 version of Ubuntu?
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why wouldnt it?
as long as your hardware is up to the task (amd 64 is) and the graphics card is supported (most likly if you have a x64 system) and the driver is correctly installed. - urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I second that, thats how I got it running (on kubuntu though). you can also use the anykey optimizer found on kde-apps.org if your running kde.
automatix is the easiest way to go. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can just install cgwd and replace gnome-window-decorator with cgwd and it should work...theoretically
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Marked as inaccurate.
The guide listed as a link is sill using gnome-windows-decorator. This has been superceded by cgwd. - rockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Either everybody is using ATI cards or nobody actually followed the guidelines. The NVIDIA line is wrong. It should read "fbo" not "fdo" as typed.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea....this is a first I got a positive number of Diggs on this topic.
I don't agree that Ubuntu itself isn't a good distro to learn Linux, I think it's just bad when articles out there and on Digg seem to differentiate Ubuntu from Linunx....making it seem like a completely separate operating system all together. Then you get the people saying "Ubuntu is a good OS". ex: "How to do any generic Linux task in Ubuntu". These people are just confused.
...and then I try pointing out that they are wrong, get dugg down, and I get labeled as an "elitist" which isn't the case at all.
Here's a tip: DO NOT put "Ubuntu" under the skills section of your resume. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The only problem with that is legacy systems (like mine) that aren't supported by the binary drivers, or don't have open-source drivers that have 3D support. And to support both Xgl and what they have now, they'd have to kick more stuff off of the install/Live CD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why would you want that, Rather than Apt-Getting some Repositories from the Command Line and Good ***** like that.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2had to go back to default gnome. Its nice to just revert back to normal. The tutorial didnt work flawlessly for me. :(
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're updated article still doesn't mention cgwd which is what is used in place of gnome-window-decorator in the latest release of Compiz. Please update.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not sure what I did wrong but it runs like crapola! my windows are lagggy and now I am not sure how to undo the changes though I tried a different session. Wonderful. *sigh*
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Rub3X: "Hating Windows isn't cool anymore hate to say it. Maybe when you grow up you'll realize how much better Windows is as a desktop than Linux."
When will I be 'grown up'? Because I'm 28 now, and if I'm going to lose my mind soon, I want to make sure my affairs are in order.
Also, I don't hate Windows. But neither do I prefer it. - Trinitrogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for once im able to get xgl working just long enough for to know that my laptop isn't beefy enough for it :)
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Rub3X: "Wow this is the most people (on Digg) that have ever agreed that a lot of its users are quite annoying. Revolution? ;o"
See, the thing is that all users are annoying, when they start making snarky comments about users of other OSes. - d0nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The precompiled binaries of xgl and compiz (official) do not work at this time. There are some 3rd parties who do alot of the xgl and compiz dev who have amd64 repos, however they don't keep amd64 as up to date as 386.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not quite, the minimal number of things that have to be done by something to be defined as an operating system is fairly small. All of these things are done by the kernel. The kernel is an operating system in its self, although without at least the basic UNIX tools and a non-graphical shell it's not a very useful one. If the some of the components of ubuntu were directly included in the kernel (namely, xorg and gnome) and the kernel was renamed to ubuntu then you would probably be spot on, however, in a purely technical sense it is incorrect to call ubuntu an operating system. As it is in fact a number of components, some with minor changes, compiled to work with the version of each other used, shoved in the same place with and installer and distributed.
(By the way, I'm 15 and run ubuntu, I hope my age and choice of distribution don't automatically cause me to transform into the stereotype that was commented on earlier.) - Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately no, you'll have to install gnome, if you want it to work you'll have to start by doing sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. After that follow the guide an it should work fine.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1XGL/Compiz is still in development, once they are in an acceptable state I imagine ubuntu will have it as default.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Rub3X
Because it's really grown-up to imagine that people are dictated by "what's cool". - thetron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could you keep us posted. I'm runing the 64bit version atm
I'm feeling risky :) - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So after I go through the 34page manual on how to install XGL on Ubuntu, where is the manual to get Battlefield 2 working on Ubuntu?"
It isn't the community's fault that Battlefield 2 isn't available natively for Linux. Go ask EA. - ekso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Account banned. WTF??
- graystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1automatix bleeder is the way to go. Used that tonight, it remembers your original settings - which is handy as I use tv-out sometimes.
Just choose XGL or your older session from the session menu on login. - Mnemonicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good to hear that some can get it to work in 64bit Ubuntu. I'm still hesitant to try it on my pc though. XGL worked great though with the 386 Ubuntu.
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I notice that there are no decoration parameters in the startcompiz file after the "compiz –replace gconf" line. Is this no longer a prerequisite to load all of the fancy effects?
You used to have to add something like "compiz --replace gconf decoration wobbly fade minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place menu switcher &" or the effects listed would not work.
This is a pretty good summary for a clean installation without overwriting the default session(as most of the tutorials for xgl would do). This reminds me of the old davehayes.org tutorial. - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh it will work, but there's no mention of that in either guide.
- kolavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice job mentioning the super-key and the shift-backspace fix. ESPECIALLY the shift-backspace fix, I thought Xgl was crashing the desktop manager every five minutes.
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there a way to get XGL/Compiz working with Xubuntu (xfce)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow this is the most people (on Digg) that have ever agreed that a lot of its users are quite annoying. Revolution? ;o
- mwales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have gnome/XGL working on a AMD64 machine with nVidia GeForce 6800. I installed XGL and Compiz stuff around in May/June timeframe (when Dapper Drake was still Beta). I did not get KDE to work though, and I didn't want to switch to Gnome.
Anybody got KDE+XGL+3d Acceleration (UT2004) on AMD64/nVidia? - Jimtac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as I love Linux, I would love for there to be a more "(average)User-friendly" way of doing this for anyone. I can't wait until there is a truly mainstream distro that I can give to my relatives to get them away from windows, with not spending the cash on a mac. I run all three OS's, and all have their benefits, and draw-backs, but wish that there was a way that command line could be an option, rather than a necessity.
That said, this worked great for me... Good work. -
