- jexdawg, on 12/27/2008, -0/+20it would be sweet if you could transfer between different OSs on the same network, since i use ubuntu and everyone else i know uses windows or mac - so not much help there.
- minago, on 12/27/2008, -0/+16i wish there was a windows version so i could use this to trade files between my old desktop and my laptop....
- Vektuz, on 12/27/2008, -1/+15If only there were some sort of Transfer protocol for Files that was standard and everyone knew the specs on!
- Vadi0, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9Ubuntu already has networking capabilities too. This is more about user-friendliness and probably uses those capabilities.
- thallium205, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8www.getdropbox.com
- SquareWheel, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9You frustrate me.
- zncdr, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8Are you suggesting regular desktop users to install and maintain a ftp server to share some file once a while over th network?
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7Depends, sharing between OS's can be a bitch.
XP and Vista can be hard sometimes.
XP and linux can be a bitch.
Vista and Linux can be a whore.
etc. - whiprush, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7Pidgin has file transfers, just enable a bonjour account on both the linux and windows machines and it will do just what giver does.
- dmsean, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6? the point of SSH = security....why would you disable encryption.
NFS is fast, but if you want security, good luck!
And if you don't care, ***** it. ftp. - chmcarro, on 12/27/2008, -3/+8PROTIP: FTP
- igutekunst, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5 Why do people hate this?
- sourceholder, on 12/27/2008, -3/+8Mirror | ɿoɿɿiM:
http://CommunityMirror.ath.cx/p/tombuntu.com/index ... - mohtasham, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5SMB is not fast. I use NFS which has been available before Microsoft was founded. NFS uses UDP, which is pretty ideal for transferring large files on the network. I use it for transferring movies between my computers.
- Otto, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4If you don't want encryption, why the heck would you use scp? Use rcp instead. Duh.
- RizzoFrank, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5Set a shared directory on windows machine. Mount said share on ubuntu machine.
- muppethouse, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4The purpose of giver is not to be "faster than NFS", it's to be as easy to use as handing someone a file physically. It uses zeroconf and can show a nice little picture of the people around you. Yeah, if there were binaries for other platforms that'd be great.
Lets say you're sitting next to someone at a conference or at the airport - they're not on your buddy list, you're not gonna set up a SMB share, setting up a web server to share files is silly - this is designed for that purpose. File sharing should be as easy as handing someone a piece of paper. - mohtasham, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5Well, I meant that NSF had been around for much longer time than SMB. A quick googling showed me that NFS was created in 1983 as you mentioned and SMB was created in 1992.
BTW, SMB is the same age as I am. :) - elementfire, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5Uh, get your facts right, please. NFS was created by Sun in 1983. Microsoft was founded in 1975.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4Samba, my friend.
- Fr0stbyte124, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Look up one post.
- Stonekeeper, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3Its speed is the least of my worries...
- m0deth, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3yuppers, I use it, and love it.
- cran, on 12/27/2008, -3/+6... and the standard SMB sharing which has been available since the 90's isn't good enough because ...
- wolfpuncher, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3iChat already does the useful part of this *****, autodiscovery of all users on the network and you can send folders, multiple files or whatever.
That video was ***** cringworthy too, ugh no wonder people don't use Linux if the average user looks/sounds like this - tech42er, on 12/28/2008, -1/+4Yeah, mono's such a pain. Your machine can't do anything for like 2 weeks.
- Stonekeeper, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5I think this is such a cool little app, but.... i'm kinda loathe to have mono on my machine. Yay for Novell techs. Boo for Novell.
- Otto, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3No, because SMB is not designed for that sort of thing. Local sharing of files/printers/etc. Simple Messaging, in other words, not secure file transfers over WANs and through firewalls.
PROTIP: Using the right tool for the right job makes things simpler. Look into "scp". - tehmacuser, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Mac users have a very similar program called DropCopy:
http://10base-t.com/macintosh-software/dropcopy/
Also runs on the iPhone - ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3LMAO
why use ssh when telnet is so much faster?!?!?! you can't even sniff the contents of the packets with ssh?!?! so stoopid! - Cimlite, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3If you have a Windows machine, it does not get much easier than to use "HTTP File Server" (scary name but trust me, it's grandma-friendly).
A program so simple anyone can use it and you can transfer files to and from the Windows box from any OS with a web browser..
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/ - dmsean, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Ever tried to send a file over 1gig via SMB.....
Over a WAN....
Through firewalls...
Securely.... - Defiant001, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3I don't know why your being dug down, its an excellent zero config program which I use a lot.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3I wonder how hard it would be to chat to this application? Sometimes it's nice to have a local area chat tool that inside the sandbox.
- evilgourmet, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2@minago
You could try Xming to run Linux apps on Windows: http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?gro ... - mohtasham, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2You're right. I was doing a research back in the time on SSH and had to analyze the format of packets send on the wire. With the encryption mode enabled, there was no way to achieve that.
However, sometimes it might be useful to use it in trusted networks when you don't have administrative rights to create an ftp server on remote machines and the only way of connecting is SSH. - evilgourmet, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2If I were running an office full of Linux machines (again), this would be a great program.
- Otto, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Agreed, but I like Fedora better.
- YouAreDead, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3dugg for ɿoɿɿiM
- mrBitch, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2second that, HFS is a tiny little windows exe http based file server (doesn't even need to be installed, it just runs from whatever folder the exe is sitting in).
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/ - hartley, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2+chat
-transfer folders - mason092, on 12/28/2008, -3/+5I know it's cool to hate big corporations like MS, but linux doesn't meet my needs. Can it play all my games as smoothly and problem free as windows does?
- MikeZila, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3No. It cannot. It is not right for you.
- sublimeparanoia, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2i immediately got it running on my vm. now if only i they would make it work with windows....
- mrBitch, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2second that. getdropbox.com = cross platform file transfers.
- cyrokill, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2i like every step taken to look ubuntu windows like (in terms of features)
good work!
filephile is good.. - Munk3y, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Geeze, dug down because some guy posts a mirror at the exact same time I ask? That's pretty *****.
- wolfpuncher, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2***** MASSIVE LOL!
GIVER.JPG
remember that - BransonLAN, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1Not everyone uses iChat
idiot - wolfpuncher, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Learn to Bonjour
using Bonjour in iChat would do great for exactly what you describe at the airport.
