- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39When Ubuntu 7.04 is released, taking a day off Digg would be a smart idea. It'll be like the PS3 launch in Japan.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Amarok is the best music player on the planet. Firefox and OOo you probably already know of. Eclipse is a good IDE if you are into coding. Evolution is the standard E-Mail client and can link to exchange servers.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20it's called blog spam. That's pretty much all digg is used for somedays, get used to it.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Damn, this was pretty much just a copy of the announcement that Mark Shuttleworth made himself.
Top notch journalism. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2007-April/000276.html - DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I personally think the move to a 3D desktop is well within the reach of Gutsy (Oct 07).
Relative (Metacity, KWin, etc...) stability will continue to be an issue but the leap needs to be made. This is Linux if it breaks we can fix it. - Kickersny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Just to argue semantics here, but Linux can in fact do everything that OSX or Windows can do--it's just that the software developers (Adobe, VALVe, Bungie, etc) do not release their software for Linux.
There is no fundamental flaw in the kernel which prevents this; just a lack of software releases. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16My personal list:
Torrent Client: Deluge - still needs some work, but it's lightweight, has a nice GUI and is developing rapidly.
Drivers: You'll want to install nVidia or fglrx (ati) drivers if you have an nVidia or ATI graphics card.
Window Manager: Compiz if you want stability and usability, or Beryl if you want fancy effects and customisability. Probably not worth it if you have an ATI card, since you'll have to install XGL which will cripple 3D support.
Appearance: Check out gnome-look.org would be my advice. Lots of great stuff - murrine engine in particular. (shameless plug - check out Tango-Generator for icon themes).
Media Player: Totem with the proper codecs works pretty well, although MPLayer's a good idea if you want DVDs and for backup. VLC can be tricky, since the Ubuntu folks disabled a fair few features in their builds to remain legal. Totem-xine isn't worth it especially in beta versions, since it'll remove the default totem-gstreamer and ubuntu-desktop packages. That can make updates problematic. Besides, if you follow the restricted formats wiki page you'll get all the same codecs without it.
Games: Plenty of lists. The Feisty wine builds work great with Valve Source based games if you follow a few pointers at winehq.com's appdb.
Office: The included openoffice is full featured but a bity heavy. Try gnome-office if you want something more lightweight.
Music: Banshee or Listen are my favourite Gnome music players. Amarok's awesome, but pulls in lots of KDE dependencies, adds QT overhead and generally doesn't intergrate aswell as some of the others.
Web Browser: Firefox's fine, but I find epiphany has a much better feel to it if if you can miss a few extensions. The 'epiphany-extensions' package also has a good few extras, and it performs far better than firefox.
CD Burning: Brasero is one of the best, particularly among GTK burning software.
Any specific type of software you want help on, post back here or on the Ubuntu forums.
Oh yeah, I'd also go against Automatix since you can install everything it does by yourself and it's neither supported nor particularly good for your system in the long run. - sirdaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16If only it was possible to set a world record of the amount of OS's being installed at any one time. 19th/20 would be the time to check.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14No. Not at all. Automatix is BAD. VERY VERY BAD. Just hop onto the IRC channel and ask how to install software provided by Automatix WITHOUT Automatix, or you may end up with a very broken system.
- phr0ze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@chriskzoo
Umm linux (Ubuntu included) has been able to do everything Windows and OSX can do for years. It's even ahead of it in some areas. The question to ask is how difficult is it to do in linux. That is what has been improving dramatically. - UberSchwarz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Ubuntu just keeps getting better and better.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's the little things, cleaning up the edges that make Ubuntu better. Technically it hasn't improved all that much from day one, you can do the same things now as then but it has made the overall experience nicer (there have been a few performance boosts including Upstart and the new linking system for Feisty). There are some things I would like though, Xen support (meaning Xen enabling the kernel and making it easy to install the hypervisor) and SELinux being two killer features.
- MrHighTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Download the torrent. Much faster
- dremeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think the names are great and love ubuntu.
I don't wan't to turn this into a yes it can, no it cant conversation as I run Edgy myself, but I have to disagree with you phr0ze, to an extent.
Linix can't do everything that Windows or OSX can, it still cannot do professional-grade print photo editing and high end design work. I think you are correct when saying it is even ahead of it in some areas which is one reason I really enjoy using Ubuntu. Here is the problem in my case, due to my dynamic work scope, I need Nix for most things, but still need to use Windows/OSX to insure STABLE use of Photoshop CS2 and various other web dev apps.
At the end of the day I have grown very comfortable with Linux (especially Ubuntu) and wish there was a way to just use it for everything, realistically speaking, it is not completely possible yet.
here come the flames.... - dodgyd55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13i just installed ubuntu yeserday because i was fed up of vista, whats the best apps can i get?
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Money not needed! So if I offered to buy them several copies of every Nvidia card on the market they would declare that as unneeded? Money is not only for monetary compensation to the developers (though I would like to see them well paid for their work), there are huge rafts of resources they can buy.
If Shuttleworth has offered them unconditional support though he has gone up further in my estimation. - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Convert to Feisty beta now and then when it's "official" you'll only have to download a few packages.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How long has Digg had a reply feature?
- MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And LONGHORN is a good code name?
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9We aren't far away now. There are a few problems with Swing rendering and some other direct rendering issues but once they are solved I think we can wrap a ribbon around it and send it out into the world.
The real issue is the one of proprietary drivers. I would back shipping blobs in this case but it should be balanced by more effort on the free driver front. I think if Shuttleworth provided some sort of secure funding towards Nouveau it would go a long way to making the short term blob pill easier to swallow. I think shipping blobs would soon be followed by an increase in effort in this regard in any case. - TunaFisu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I believe Shuttleworth unofficially promised the nouveau crew pretty much any support they ever need, to which they responded that money was not really needed, test cases were. So, renouveau is currently featuring a prominent role in ubuntu forums.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nouveau in Gutsy would be superb :)
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Amarok for music and ipod integration etc
vlc or totem-xine for watching movies
deluge for bittorrent
k3b for burning cds
f-spot for photo management - phr0ze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Umm, have you actually tried synaptic? It beats the hell out of installing something on windows. Just check the box and hit apply. All software is databased with descriptions. How much easier can it get?
- xyphur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://www.osalt.com/ is a good place to start looking for apps, as they list some of the more popular proprietary titles being used these days on Windows alongside their possible open source alternatives.
Welcome to the world of FOSS. - 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Typo. It should be Gibson. Yes, now you too can be 1337 with your Ubuntu box and people will try to hack your very own Gibson.
- meteorash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Has no one ever heard of Songbird? Whats with all the amarok craze!
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What's wrong with furry superhero names?
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh you very much can do that. But that's a hell of a lot more clicks than one. And a lot more clicks to install something than Adept/Synaptic takes to install something.
- c130commnav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have never had a problem with automatix, I used it to install java, flash, and codecs. Didn't break my system at all
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This doesn't have any more information than Shuttleworth's announcement that was on the front page a while ago.
- Pie_Man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Make SURE that you also try KDE also. Install it with Synaptic and use login to switch between it and Gnome...you might like that desktop environment better than the default Ubuntu one.
If you are gonna use Gnome, I know that this sounds cheesy, but the best program that I like is the Gdesklet "Weather" toolbar app. It is one of the few programs unique to gnome and it is very functional.
Also +1 on Amarok...imagine getting foobar and customizing it to be perfect...it would be like Amarok - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Predictions on download times for Fiesty? It only took me about 12 hours to get Edgy when it was released.
- winzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So, more accurately, it's not "Linux can't do everything that Windows/OSX can," it's "Users can't do everything on Linux they do on Windows/OSX."
- rmaus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10@boombye
Automatix isn't supported by Ubuntuforums and it will likely break your system, or at the very least make a mess of it. - cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I completely agree with you. I think that oftentimes Linux users claim, unrealistically, that they can do anything on Linux that Windows users can. I've certainly been guilty of that several times. Personally, I keep my Windows partition around for only one reason: to play games.
Note that I am not saying that this is a fault in Linux, but an effect of software developers overlooking Linux. - penguincrazy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7lifehack.com had a post of the 10 best ubuntu apps so just do a search for that on their site.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"these are codenames for unreleased software"
Yeah, except that they keep being used even after the software is released. How many people say "Edgy Eft" or "Dapper Drake" instead of "Ubuntu 6.10" or "Ubuntu 6.06 LTS" (actually people end up saying just "Edgy" or "Dapper")? - eoghanj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hairy horse?
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@c130commnav: It depends on what you use Automatix to install. In some cases, it can break your system, in others it'll prevent you from successfully upgrading your system to a newer release. In some cases, it won't have any negative effects.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@cdmarcus - My connection is fine. Those who downloaded Edgy when it was released, will recall how slow the download was.
- nandasunu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Try using the "Add/Remove" function that is in the Gnome "Applications" menu. Its a simplified & more easy to use version of synaptic. You can download .debs off the internet and install by doubleclicking too, but most stuff is in the repos anyway.
- digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2apt-get is no click, and beats the pants off any Windows installer any day.
- mrisi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A completely respectable claim, as an Edgy user as well I see what you mean here.
- frekir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7YaKuake.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@diggsIt, okay, I guess you win :)
I upgraded a week after release, so I'm not one to talk. - digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To clarify even further, given the correct software, linux can do anything windows/OS X can do.

What is Digg?
