Natively? No.
Can I use Photoshop on Ubuntu?
No
Can I play GTA on Ubuntu?
Can i play gears of war on my wii?
This is the devs/manufactueres fault, not the OSS community
, I will agree that there is some areas of software on linux that don't come close to the windows/mac alternatives, Games and design apps to name a couple.
Can my modem, router, printer, scanner, and web cam work on Ubuntu?
Pretty much, I've never had any problem with a modem, a router shouldn't even come into it if your network is set up properly, scanner i haven't had a problem with, webcam may be a problem but as above, this is the fault of this on developers/manufacturers, not the OSS community.
Can I install programs with a click of a mouse on Ubuntu?
Yes, yes you can, in fact, I'd go as far as to say installing software on ubuntu especially with synaptic etc is easier than it is on windows.
Can I receive phone support for Ubuntu?
Yes, yes you can
Can Dell install Ubuntu?
Dell, im not sure, but there are a number of linux pc suppliers.
Quite frankly i couldn't give a ***** what the 'non techies' use, I enjoy exploring things, i enjoy messing around with things, i enjoy customizing things, which is what got me into computers in the first place, and linux offers that up in shovels.
I should just point out that while i spend most of my time in Linux (Normally a debian derivative of some description) i also have to use windows, mainly for college work and programming(be it a basic windows port of something i've writen on linux or some XNA goodies) so im proficient in both, I'm also not a fanboy, but, people dismissing an operating system because its not great for 'joe user' (something which is getting better with the likes of Fedora Cora, *buntu, etc) is stupid, people who want to go from point A to point B don't buy Lamborghini's, enthusiasts do, it's much the same way with linux.
You also can't deny that Linux is a fantastic server platform, hence, it is great for small businesses, in fact it could be one of the most cost concious things a small business could do, hell compare costs between a telco setting up a full private pbx etc and a linux box running asterisk. - nga911, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11nice,but i prefer Linux rock : )
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Business conference? Canonical? I guess they will become a threat to Red Hat, but there's plenty to pinch on the other side of the fence as well. Let's hope they take bug #1 seriously.
- conmulligan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"They have a long, long way to go before they become a threat to Red Hat."
Says the guy with a Red Hat profile pic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@nga911: I prefer GNU/Linux rocks
Ok, you can bury me now.. :) - n0xie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't feed the troll
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4On the desktop I use Ubuntu, for servers I use CentOS. There's no reason I would replace my centos boxes with ubuntu. Centos provides hardened secure-as-redhat enterprise computing. It's not openbsd but then again, openbsd is slow, centos provides a nice mixture of performance and security. Ubuntu doesn't yet have that infrastructure setup yet. I think that at the server level, there's no real technical difference between ubuntu and redhat. Instead of using yum you use apt-get. You don't need proprietary fglrx drivers. You just need a barebones system that is secure.
I welcome competition to redhat's server dominance. I think ubuntu at this rate could do really well in the desktop arena. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wouldnt mind going. how much does it cost to attend?
- DarkDakota, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This "infighting" needs to be checked. I've never seen a thread where two Windows fan boys argue which distro is better XP Pro or 2003 server, or whatever the proper analogy would be.
Seriously quit squabbling like rats in a maze and start thinking big picture. - Lodarage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4LOL, ASCII art rocks too! :)
- mikedoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you download Ndiswrapper from the repositories, there's also a front end that you can also download that isn't published (that i've seen) that makes life much easier.
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Still true though
- gnixon70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well I've been playing around with Linux for a bit from a hobby beginner standpoint. The only two problems I have is the wireless and duel monitor situation. The wireless part is easy enough, just get a wireless nic thats compatible with Linux. The only other thing would be the duel monitor capabilities. With windows, of course you just plug it in and activate the second monitor in the display properties. Not so easy with Ubuntu. But, I've found some pretty good documentation on the subject and I'm going to try the command lines needed to make this happen. other then those two roadblocks(which aren't really roadblocks at all if you read into it) I'm ready to take the plunge and make one of my boxes a pure Linux box where I'll do most of my day to day work. Between open office, fire fox and all the rest of the apps available, this shouldn't be a problem.

jesus h. christ - your as bad as a Bill Gates ***** whiney ***** drone.... - SundayTrain, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I think it's fine time we stop the squabbling and unite towards a common goal and see the revenue aside. In fighting will become the inevitable downfall of a once pure ideal called open source and shuttleworth, you need to tone down the rhetoric in pursuit of your monetary gains and get back to the fundamentals and core of what the essence of what open source is. When All parties approach level ground on goals, then the fight for capital be gains can commence but only as one unified strength geared toward the common goal. SIMPLE! Put the puzzle pieces together because right now until it all fits together we become greater adversaries than our major o/s counterpart.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1?? Ubuntu Live. That would do what?
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. Ubuntu for business? The strengths of Ubuntu on the desktop are ease of installing and strong user support community. These seem like that would all be disappear for enterprise. Day to day use of Ubuntu is about the same as Debian and in the office IT would just setup the desktops and the users will just run their apps. So while replacing Windows with *nix would be good, I wonder why enterprise would really choose Ubuntu over, say Redhat or SLED?
- Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5They have a long, long way to go before they become a threat to Red Hat.

No? Now you know why sadly Ubuntu will never be the choice for individuals, and small businesses.
