FTA:
"That's extortion and we should call it what it is," he said. "To say, as Ballmer did, that there is undisclosed balance sheet liability, that's just extortion and we should refuse to get drawn into that game."
Also, some months ago he said:
"Microsoft is asking people to pay them for patents, but they won't say which ones. If a guy walks into a shop and says: "It's an unsafe neighbourhood, why don't you pay me 20 bucks and I'll make sure you're okay," that's illegal. It's racketeering. What Microsoft is doing with intellectual property is exactly the same. It's a great company and I have great admiration for it, but this was not a well considered position."
http://mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=6672 - grungegbunny, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39Yet I bet Linux use is at an all time high.
- grungegbunny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24There is one problem with your senario:
Linux and all distros are open source. - sqrt7744, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Actually I found it interesting, especially the Ubuntu stance on GPLv3 and Shuttelworth's opinion of Torvalds. You comment is "Lame. Buried."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21wow, so many people bashing open source. Why all the hate? if your run windows, and you pay MS your $$$ then why complain about a free os?
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -2/+181 DISTRIBUTION OF VISTA?
How about 6 of them.
Windows Vista Starter
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Enterprise
Windows Vista Ultimate
And the big difference, is that while linux has many distributions to let you have exactly what you want, Vista's different versions are made to milk the most money possible out of consumers. Or have you not heard of Vista Ultimate? - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14@jbt4
You are a dumbass. You forgot that the Kernel and 99% of stuff on Linux is open source and alot of them are GPL. It doesn't matter if they going to get a piece of a kernel, because everyone else will also have that same piece. - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they attack you, then you win.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13@Noctem
Makes absolute no sense.
I guess Microsoft and Apple start at 100 then? - mikezackles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12FTA:
Mark Shuttleworth:
"It isn't working and has not had the slightest impact on those companies that refuse to be drawn into that line of discussion with Microsoft."
It "isn't working." Clearly, Mark Shuttleworth is not saying that Microsoft is fracturing the open-source community. He's saying that they are attempting to do so. The title of the article is (intentionally?) misrepresenting his opinion. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Actually, yes, it is at an all time high
- brickbat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12All these people complaining about the number of distros miss the point...It is free! Anyone can create a distro for whatever purpose they want and the users decide how valuable it is for them. I welcome the choice and the friendly competition between distros. Ubuntu is great but if they go in a direction I don't like, there are so many alternatives I might prefer
- wh0rd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Yes in your lonely basement where you torture animals.
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9If we're talking about capitalism, doesn't Microsoft get disqualified for being a convicted abusive monopolist?
- ArthurSucks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Quick, Man! Turn your logic chip back on!
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11@ispep
Not everyone who disagree with you are ubuntu fanboys. I am not an ubuntu fanboy. I just think you're simply an idiot. Now let it go and stfu. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You would rather pay for an os, than run a free one? hummm
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11cricoste90 = blocked and buried
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'm using Ubuntu right now and I'm still burying you down.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Firstly, EvilDudetx, evolution. Evolution, EvilDudetx.
Linux is like evolution, the stronger more popular, more useful, more efficient software remain while others will died out. Until that software is found, there's absolutely nothing wrong of creating different branches, using different implementations, methods.
Secondly: strength in numbers. The more linux distro, the less chance linux will die out. Now imagine, if linux is 1 organization, don't you ***** think Microsoft would bought it, dismantle it by now? Take Xandros or Linspire for example. - wofldibofl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8yes, and at that time microsoft will rule the world and bill gates will be imperator of the imperial earth forces fighting against xenu.
- SaabiMeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6 - The idea was to encourage people to document how they achieved an effect and the process they followed, and in return they got a bit of a monopoly on that. But, in the case of software, the moment the code shipped, the "magic is disclosed and society really doesn't benefit by giving people a monopoly for something they are going to disclose anyway," he said. -
He couldn't have made it any clearer. - bhalo05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The so called community has always been fragmented. It has never needed MS for that.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Die bot die.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5is that Vista needs more distributions :)
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Maybe accusations of patent infringement without any proof is okay in your book, but it surely isn't in mine.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Compiz Fusion, but I certainly disagree wit what cricoste is saying. The variety and choice is one of Linux's strengths, born from the open source model, where the source is out there, and people can go in whatever direction they want with a program. Linux isn't Windows and will never be. That's not its purpose. It's not trying to "stand a chance in a real world market" necessarily. It's an open-source UNIX clone, which, contrary to popular belief, can be a good operating system for average computer users. It's still not Windows tough.
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Good point. But Gnome vs KDE, etc. is about choice. Joining the racketeers is just pure treason. There is a war going around. They are trying to make everybody's opensource software somebody's property. Don't you see that?
Gnome vs KDE is just about choice. We can still hang out and have some fun. But we better not meet any of these SUSE guys IRL. You holding them down and me pissing in their mouth might not completely satisfy us both. You might need to go a round as well. - KataLieb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Right :) Thats the difference between Steve "Ball"mer and Shuttleworth. Ballmer doesnt make any effort to appear anything else but an *****. Mark is more diplomatic...Why be a jerk if you can be polite and still convey your spikes :)
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm not really a linux user either, but the fact of the matter is that I totally support the linux movement, and they are gaining more market share by the day. Saying that linux should stick to LAMP boxes, is the equivalent of saying that you don't like any other competitors entering a business, because they put pressure on other companies. Any pressure Microsoft/Apple/Linux could put on Microsoft/Apple/Linux is good for us, you have it the other way around.
The only reason I don't use linux is that I have a couple of choice apps that I haven't seen, either in their regular form, or some kind of copycat (GIMP to Photoshop, for example). I still hope to put linux on my computer one day soon and start learning it, and as long as they keep gaining attention, that can only mean good things for consumers, no way around that. - skinturtle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah really...you "microsoft in the heads"..if you love M$ that much then go empty your wallets...be a good little consumer and buy buy BUY all the M$ software you want.
I bet when the execs at microsoft wake up in the morning...they sit right up in bed .."That MONEY!" Of course they say just before they go to sleep as well but with a closed eyes smile...*yawn*..."that money".
It's a wonder someone hasn't flew in a rage and kicked the arse of one of these high mucky mucks. Actually there probably needs to be some sort of revolt against the corporate world. - omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Ditto. Conspiracy theories don't bode well with me.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7@ispep
No because you are "Lame" and worth being "Buried." - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8God! I ***** blocked you 20 times already. WHY THE ***** haven't you stay blocked mofo. Get something larger than your unicellular brain then speak.
- hunchback, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"The strategy behind that was to drive a wedge into the open-source community and unsettle the marketplace"
Thats a wedge made of pure money baby! Sometimes I wish I have that kind of money to ***** with people and help cure cancer at the same ***** time. - ruiacp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Study the GPL...
The GPL protects the kernel against relicencing. - cantormath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I completely agree with this statement......but
If this is what you think Mark, then why would you say this on your Blog???!
"Much has been written about Microsoft’s allegation of patent infringements in Linux (by which I’m sure they mean GNU/Linux ;-)). I don’t think Microsoft is the real threat, and in fact, I think Microsoft and the Linux community will actually end up fighting on the same side of this issue."
source: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/118#comment-144338 - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4also, how the hell would you buy out all the developers??? there are millions of them!!
sorry for the multiple punctuation... - p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But you decided to respond to it anyway huh? Let me break it down for you. Why would a company like Windows releases 6 different versions of a software?
The differences between the software is really nickle and diming consumers. For instance, you have to upgrade from basic to get the Aero feature. Do you really think that is a honest tactic? When is the last time you have seen 6 different versions of the same retail software released?
Don't get it twisted, I don't even use Linux, I use Windows, but don't get that twisted for the fact that I love Windows. They are a bunch of con-artists. The day I can run the programs I want is the day I switch, and I wait for that day patiently.
Overall, the main difference is that Vista has different versions but it is a Retail Software, Linux is Open Source and free. To put it in perspective, even though Linux has many distributions, how bad do you think Vista would get blasted if it TOO had 140 distro's? Probably worse than linux, because it is apples & oranges my friend when you talk about retail and non retail software. - scratched, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually, there are several distributions of Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate.
Not to mention different versions of each of those (64-bit, enterprise, personal edition, volume license editions, etc) but I guess those can't really get counted as separate so let's say there are at least 4. Then there are the server editions of windows, which also get counted, so that's 5 different versions of Windows.
And Linux at least has compatibility between distros. Linux is just a kernel. A lot of little things are built upon that, so you could theoretically make redhat use the debian package management system just like ubuntu does.
Once you understand Linux it's not so complicated really. - mheath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And if Microsoft buys Canonical, so what? Canonical owns < 1% of what they distribute in Ubuntu Linux. Linux will carry on. Open-source developers will continue doing what they're doing. No one can buy Linux because it's owned by thousands of different individuals and corporations. Even if someone did start buying some of the copyrights to Linux, big deal. It's open-source. We can keep using it as we please as long as we don't violate the GPL.
Please jtb4. Education yourself about intellectual property and open-source licensing before posting such a narrow minded diatribe. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It would seem that KC knew he was halfway out the door and spent the last part of his tenure sewing the seeds of destruction at his company. I wouldn't be suprised to hear if he joins Microsoft as Linux / FOSS coordinator of FUD or some similar position.. A shame. The CNR site was really quite an innovation.
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4*****. Competition is healthy. So not getting on the same page is not an issue.
Opensource is, like microsoft, business.
Money is sponsoring opensource. Money is financing open-standards-commitees. Why is that?
Why does the 'invisible hand' on the free market create small litle governments within the market?
Why do they sometimes choose to share the work instead of redo-ing it all by themselves?
Money is an abstraction. Money really is about sharing in a way more efficient way. Kapitalism is not just competition, it is also co-operation. Companies might be competing. But what is a company? A co-operation.
Also, please stop with the .. you digging me down means I speak the truth. You are an idiot. You couldn't tell your ass from your mouth if you tried. That's why you get dugg down.
The truth has got nothing to do with it. You don't even have her number. - cd419, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10Thats not entirely true: Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate etc.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Same website says at the start of the year it was .32%
So that's 3x growth in a few months? I don't think that's shabby myself
Remember every .1% is a large amount of people (2-3 million) - PsychoDeli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I didn't know this :)
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The difference between KDE vs Gnome and Microsoft vs Against MIcrosoft is that one is purely technical while the other is political. When you have different minds debating on technical grounds, you get different choices and ultimately leads to a large knowledge base because "there's more than one way to skin a cat".
On the other hand, if you have different minds debate on political grounds especially when it involves Microsoft, a convicted monopolist, you will get lack of choices, expensive software and an ongoing debates that leads to nowhere, lost of productivity and Microsoft laughing it head off. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Steve Ballmer, the only balls he has is in his name.
- grungegbunny, on 10/10/2007, -8/+11Boy seems since Digg has teamed up with Micro$oft for advertising, the ms boys brought the fan base along with them.
It goes something like this "omgz! people get an OS for free when I paid 250 bux0rz? bury! bury! bury!" - cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Marking you down for using Micro$oft doesn't prove your point, since we also mark down comments that make childish snipes at Linux and OSS as well.
Accusing Digg of selling out to MS, when you are commenting on an article in the Linux/Unix category; that category was established long before Digg accepted the need for a seperate category for Microsoft; and gets equal or better traffic (although a lot of the traffic is "My First Ubuntu" blog posts).
I have only seen one (additional) consistently pro-MS poster on Digg since the announced change in ad services, and that one is obviously being an over the top troll (at least obvious to anyone looking at their comment history). I have seen a far greater increase in astroturfing in topics outside of Technology on Digg, as of late. -
