- ptFoe, on 04/11/2008, -12/+67baalzebub are you a moron?
Not everything in the world is aimed at the "3D gamer".
Stingy bastard too - z0mbie2099, on 04/11/2008, -2/+56Dude what else you want for $99?
- dave122, on 04/11/2008, -2/+44yeah because that 100 watt power supply is gonna drive some serious video cards...
- santaliqueur, on 04/11/2008, -1/+34Accelerated graphics for photos and editing? Methinks you know not what the ***** you speak of.
- InorganicMatter, on 04/11/2008, -0/+29What part of "Power users need not apply" didn't you understand?
- nobelief, on 04/11/2008, -1/+22learn how to use the reply button
- neodorian, on 04/11/2008, -0/+19- Not a gaming PC
- playing movies doesn't need 3d acceleration
- intensive photo and graphics editing mainly depend on CPU and RAM, not video acceleration
- It's $99 and clearly a budget PC, not a cutting edge high performance PC
I would love to pick something like this up to hook up to my TV when I move next month. My roommate owns our file server/HTPC so I could do with a small and simple box to give my TV access to the media on my desktop and laptop. - doolittle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+19The KPC uses Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, which does support mpeg & 3d hardware acceleration - it only lacks hardware T&L which are only used in gaming. It is even vista/aero supported. http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/inde ... You have to use "xserver-xorg-video-intel " driver to get glx enabled (it has been working since i945). PCIe slot not needed.
The motherboard does have SATA and a PATA port so you can simply plug in your CD or DVD drive when needed, unless you upgrade/ reinstall your OS daily the lack of a CD/DVD drive should not be an issue (unless you don't have networking :) - ZephyrNinety, on 04/11/2008, -1/+19Did you know?
Some people don't play games on their computers. - garfonzo, on 04/11/2008, -1/+18Not too sure what you're doing with your cell phone, but I use mine to make phone calls.
- Woecip, on 04/11/2008, -4/+18Oh Toms Hardware? Back in the day Id click the link....Ill pass now though.
- Nerfdude, on 04/11/2008, -1/+13$99 is for the barebones, title is misleading. to get a functional computer you'd have to pay $199, which, honestly, isn't a great price point for such a minimal system.
- Ravatar, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12Awesome for a tiny file/web server.
- insertAliasHere, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11Then do that. You were never a target for a true barebones green pc anyway, based on what you posted ("accelerated graphics for movies and intensive photos and graphics editing, and a DVDRW").
But just because it sucks for you, doesn't mean that it doesn't have it's place. Honestly, I could see filling our our entire data entry department with these, as well as maybe a few other departments too. And at $99 instead of $500, that's just freaking great. - DreKor, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11I think you're doing it wrong.
- stronglikedan, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11It's called a USB hub and double sided tape. I swear...people would still complain if it were 5 bucks. Geez.
- Kidman13, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10Just got my barebone system yesterday and I was quite impressed. The casing has a very nice finish and the size factor is just awesome. I also ordered an external DVD burner, which are quite cheap now aswell. My only problem is the missing usb port in the front. But that's a problem that a simple USB hub can fix.
- 350Zed, on 04/11/2008, -3/+13...and punctuation and Capital Letters at the beginning of sentences.
All I see is "blah blah blah blah blah ACRONYM blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah ACRONYM ACRONYM blah blah blah blah". - dcmjzero, on 04/11/2008, -2/+12"...and a DVDRW is a must!"
why? i don't even know the last time i used an optical drive on a computer. i agree on the frontside usb though. - defectDS, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9And while we're here, the period goes inside the quotes.
- orxor, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9Well then perhaps this product is not marketed for you. It's still a pretty good value.
- CamZak, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9Not a bad little system. I have a laptop with somewhat the same specs but a celeron 440. Takes less than a minute to get to a gnome desktop from powerup, and can handle 720P video fine.
Now if it had HDMI out, I'd be in love with it. Ah well, it's $200, future versions will no doubt offer even more features. Still good if you want your grandmother to be able to surf the internet with out paying too much. - dcmjzero, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9usb thumb drives will work fine. and dude, take some drugs for that personality problem.
- Gogogo111, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9GF: What the hell is this?
You: Its a Mac!
GF: This isn't a Mac, this is *****.
Yeah.. she wants a mac..not a hackintosh. - RomeyRome, on 04/11/2008, -3/+11The 945G chipset runs OS X rather well ;)
- hayzeus, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8Never start a sentence with "And."
- Aeuta, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8Again this is more or less for the "Enterprise" or very basic user...they aren't going to be using front side USB ports as often. It would probably never work as the average Digg user's machine (well unless you are like me and the only thing you do is Digg). Again as a second machine or as a "library" system it would be quite good. It s a no go for anything beyond that but there is a market out there. I myself think it is over powered...1.8Ghz is a little too much for such a machine I would have preferred a $20 drop in price and a 1 Ghz processor for this Digg surfing machine.
- farblong, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7Seriously, this is identical in chipset and components to a C2D mini I just bought. I might get one just to hack around and see how different they really are.
(Bonus that you don't need a spatula to open this case) - InorganicMatter, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8I have to wonder why, as much as they simplified Linux, they didn't put big giant icons on the desktop that said "Internet," "Email," "Instant Messaging," and "Word Processing?" How often do ignorant users sniff around start menus? They use the icons that are placed on the desktop and in the quicklaunch bar by default and that's about it.
I also have to ask what's up with putting the K in Korporate if they are using GNOME? If they were using KDE, I could understand that, but....Korporate? - InorganicMatter, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8Uhh....solid and cheap Hackintosh platform, anyone? :D
- Ansible, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7I don't know about power users need not apply. Just depends on what you want it for. To me this would be tres cool for a NAS box - put a 750g hard drive in the other slot and let it stay on all the time. Also load Transmission on there for bittorrent needs. Its got 5.1 surround, so install a web based audio playback interface, and then you can queue up audio tracks on it from a laptop, or a maybe a phone with a web browser. Ubuntu 8.04 is going to have the pulseaudio gadget on it, so you could load that on there and then route your laptop audio through this thing to play on the stereo - wireless audio like the apple thingy, whatever its called. Airport extreme? In general lots of powerful things to be done, and its much cheaper than comparable NAS boxes.
- Nikonian, on 08/17/2008, -0/+7Sweet! I was looking for a affordable shuttle pc.
- nickj6282, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6You know, as long as you don't have an HDTV, an original Xbox system runing Xbox Linux + Xbox Media center is a great option for this.
We use our Xbox 360 to watch our media on the HDTV in the living room and the original Xbox on the smaller TV in the bedroom. It's nice because it works with anything we throw at it, plus it still plays DVDs and Xbox games. An original Xbox can be had used for less than $100 at most used game stores/pawn shops. Plus it's a softmod meaning you don't need to install a modchip to install Xbox Linux. - hacman, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6So... baby seal walks into a club...
- intangible, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Don't capitalize random conjunctions. The other guy shouldn't start sentences with punctuation.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6you should never use and NOUN and
- nickj6282, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6Your comment glosses over a few fun facts about PC gaming. Let me break this down.
Scenario 1:
I buy an Xbox 360 (good example since I do actually own one). I paid $400 for it. Now I go to the store and buy any Xbox 360 game and know it works. No hardware specs, no upgrading. As long as it's an Xbox 360 game, it works on my system. I can play in HD with surround sound and multiplayer and all that fun stuff.
Scenario 2:
I buy a gaming rig PC. Lets say I spend $1000 to get a mid-range system. I buy some games and have fun with them. But wait, I want to play them at full res, or I want new games in a year. Now I buy a $300 video card and another $100 RAM upgrade to keep up. Another year, another couple hundred bucks to upgrade my rig to keep up with the latest games. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 system (just an example) that came out in 2005 requires zero upgrades to play the latest Xbox 360 games.
Please show me your numbers and how they add up to a good investment. I realize that PC gaming has a devoted audience and it's a good choice for many people. But for people like me where money is a factor, console gaming makes so much more sense. Please tell me what PC I can buy for $400 and be assured that I can play the best and newest games for at least 4-5 years without having to buy anything extra beyond more controllers. - jamie191817, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5good looking little box that isnt it?
- sinkhead, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5I could swear Pidgin (as in the IM program) wasn't spelled 'pidgeon'
- UberNick, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6"without any optical drive [...] how are you going to download..."
through the internet? - solarwind24, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6This is perfect for many uses: storage server, watching movies, print server and so on...
- Mejogid, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5You think even a 1.8 GHz processor can handle digg's comment system!?
- dcmjzero, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4just get a usb adapter for the drive. problem solved.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - sockpuppets, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5It'll cost me $99 in gas just to get to Fry's and back to buy the thing.
- darundal, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4He didn't say linux had bad hardware detection, he said a beta of FORESIGHT LINUX had bad hardware detection. One distro does not mean every linux distro. I am an Ubuntu user, but I hate all the crap that gets put up saying "how to do this or that in linux" that ends up only being an Ubuntu tutorial.
- quadvods, on 04/12/2008, -1/+5+torrent seedbox
- defectDS, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Who do you think you are, you little nonconformist. Rickroll right or don't rickroll at all!
- mholtzman, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4after reading the review, i will say.....not
- joshualamgroup, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3i guess you could pop any os on it if you want.
- cojerk, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Why? What did I miss? What's wrong with Toms Hardware? I haven't been there in quite some time so I honestly don't know.
