- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27What ShipIt does is cool, but I hope most people will simply download the ISO image and burn a copy for themselves. Lets not waste charity. Lets conserve it for those who need it most (poor people on dial up).
The day it comes out, the fastest way to download it will likely be to find a torrent at ubuntu.com, and windows user can burn the iso image for free using:
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5 - Fergy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22OK first, 4.04 never existed. 4.10 was the first release
The thing that got Ubuntu where it is today is the combination of many factors like shipit but also: great online support, easy to install, easy to use, listen to what users want(not corporations), regular and predictable release etc.
These days you can't have _one_ thing you do good and be the number one distro.
Ubuntu has been reliable and has been building upon its strengths and eliminating it's weaknesses. Mandriva has been unreliable with unpredictable releases, sometimes going for a paid subscription sometimes not, sometimes shipping old packages and sometimes shipping brandnew untested packages. SuSE has been unreliable with unpredictable releases, keeping the slow and labyrint of settings YAST instead of speeding it up and reorganizing it, integrating a horrible updater that never worked, waiting and waiting to ship a single livecd that you can install like every other distro.
If SuSE and Mandriva had shipit and Ubuntu would not, Ubuntu would still be number one. - JohnnyKdiggs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I hope that's sarcasm I hear, and not idiocy.
- Carburetor, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Yeah, Ubunt is a crap, but Ubuntu rocks.
Seriously, The fact you can't even spell it right showing the experience you had with it. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -13/+29ShipIt is the main thing that got Ubuntu where it is today. It's also the only reason why I installed Ubuntu 4.04. To be fair, Ubuntu is decent not just because of the distribution method. It was still a Debian back in the days though, with prominent rivals like SuSE and even Mandriva. I often wonder where it would be if it were not for the free CDs...
- gummih, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Well, in all fairness this IS the Linux/Unix section and Ubuntu IS the biggest OS in that category, so a new release IS big news - in the Linux/Unix section.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17The site says that the service is currently unavailable because they are preparing for Gutsy. Drat.
- edzilla, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17They actually do :)
- gummih, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Yes, time is important. That's why it's great to be able to boot right from the CD before you decide to install, it's cool and surprisingly fast even from the CD.
- spikelee33, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19Here's how to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Upgrade_to_Ubuntu_Gutsy ... - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I hate it when people say they value their time but proceed to comment on something they clearly have no interest in.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Fedora also has a service similar to shipit in which it distributes CD's for free. Last time I checked anyways.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Troll attempt: 2/10
Nice try. - Carburetor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15People like you are making the world look like crap.
I wish you'll stick with windows to the rest of your life.
Close source, like you're brain. - Fergy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11And they do. 6.10 and 7.04 had free stickers in the package.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13With 6.10 I jumped on the free CD bandwagon and got a few different ones (A few X86, 1 X64 and 1 PPC) so I could test them on various machines and/or give them away (I gave the PPC one to a friend with a PowerBook G4 since I was rid of my G5).
They should include a few free stickers. ;) - D3m0n14k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Marvellous - a new sport, linux geek baiting.
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I agree, however, I'm probably gonne order a bunch for work when customer's bring in their 3 or 4 year old computer because they had a friend "upgrade" it last year and now it won't let them log in because it complains its not genuine. You wouldn't believe how mad people get when I tell them how much it will cost them to purchase windows again. Now I can have the stack of Ubuntu cd's right there and just charge the customer for the service of installing it for them
- Dyde, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15most awesome os ever, ORDER IT NOW!
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12No, I hear idiocy.
- nonsapiens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I use it. As does my girlfriend. My parents. My grandparents. Friends.
- martinjones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Likewise, you can get kubuntu through shipit from here: http://shipit.kubuntu.org/
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Not Really. My idiocy meter are off the roof. Sorry you cant fool science.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7No. I live in India and had the discs shipped to me from the Netherlands.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Resistance is futile!
- dougallj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Meaning you actually *can* melt your drive with Ubuntu if you try?
Sounds like a useful feature... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8what kind of idiot dugg him down cause he is right? the site is closed.
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4290/79081271ty ... - Bonzodog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Hrm...do we include the 2 million (approx) known Ubuntu users in that? Yes, we know how many people have ubuntu in active use. The repo servers record log-in figures.
Linux has an estimated world wide user base of at least 29 million, and thats the ones that we know about. Because of Linux's Open Source /free to download nature it's possible that number could be closer to twice that estimate. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It wasn't a matter of money. Honestly. I just had a spare box and I needed to put Linux on it ASAP. A colleague just had a pile of Ubuntu CDs. I tried to get Mandrake/driva at the time. Ubuntu 4.10 was seen as a 'consolation prize' because I usually prefer KDE. Usually.
BTW, I mean 4.10, not 4.04. - lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Perhaps you can make a small "per CD donation" to ShipIt, and pass that cost down to your fortunate customers.... just a thought.
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Selling support to large companies. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/paid
Also Mark Shuttleworth the founder of Ubuntu is a self made billionaire with enough money to pay Russians to fly him in to space. He always attributed the majority of his success to the open source software and Linux distros available at the time and wanted to give something back to the community.
So their long term business model is make money by selling support and there short term business model is loose money because he has enough of it to afford to loose some. - bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Your speakers don't work in Linux? Is there a reason I shouldn't call you a Windows baby? Let me guess, you were trying to google "speaker drivers" and found an audiophile board instead of googling "sound card drivers".
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Seriously... if you think it's bad now, wait until three days prior to the release. It will get worse for you. Most fanboys are excited about the next release and are eagerly awaiting for that day. If you really want to see how bad it can get, jump on irc.freenode.com in #ubuntu on the 18th.
- estaticd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is great, I've used ShipIt in the past, great service.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Double Post. Just to show you how much more futile!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I am very curious about Ubuntu. I really don't like XP or Vista for obvious reasons. I am however concerned about how my music and multimedia software will run. I currently use Sound Forge, Vegas, Ableton, FL Studio, Photoshop, etc. How should I expect this software to run using Ubuntu?
Please do not tell me to get a Mac. Please do not criticize me for not doing my research. You all seem like a knowledgeable lot, and I figured some friendly advice might save me a severe headache later. Thanks! - init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Why not just "sudo chkconfig hdparm off"?
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Nope, it was both.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5How do they make money?
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Don't know why you are getting buried... Fedora has a free ship system as well.
- lonnieh, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8you are so smart. and funny. and witty.
jk, you're a tard - wvdavis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5OK, let's look at the cumulative statement here... pooptaster says "if I were smart", hummm
There you go. - gummih, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Haha, thanks - but bad sale though - $0
- duhblah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Most of us aren't going to start going to church either, but do you think people will stop trying to get us in there? I agree it's tiring if you have no intention of converting - so what. Read something else and stop whining.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Close source, like you are brain.
- AlgnPelotudo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you value your time but you are a digger.... i smell contradiction.
- DirtySnachez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Most windows apps will fine run under the freeware 'wine' windows emulator ;) or the commercially purchased Crossover Office. Alternatively, and for best stability, there are native programs that function as replacements for most windows programs. check out http://www.osalt.com/
If all else fails, you can run Linux as you main OS, then set up a virtual windows guest OS using VMware or similar, and have windows running on top of Linux in a regular window (or full screen).. which gives you the safety and l33tness of running Linux, but allowing you not to entirely ditch your favorite win apps..
Let me know if you would like more info, or jump into the ubuntuforums.org and start learning :-) - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"I often wonder where it would be if it were not for the free CDs..."
How to spot a geek :-) - flashback99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3is it US only?
