- gnawph2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35How is this site Web 2.0? Because it has a reflected logo?
Stupid bubble... - Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Web 2.0 my arse...
- suppressingfire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16don't forget http://www.system76.com
- underthewether, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14is it just me or do those laptops look exactly the same as system76's products?
- Donholio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Over 1/2 this guys submissions are ads for Shafttech.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hrrm, when they start dropping laptops in the sub $500, then I'd be interested.
- Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And I wonder who is digging down the negative comments?????
- astatine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It'd be nice to see Kubuntu instead of vanilla Ubuntu on their list of options.
- Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Not that I am a M$ fanboy either... but "Notebooks starting at $849" shipping with Ubuntu is by far no deal. I mean a good chunk of what you pay for on a laptop is the OS... These look like rebranded system76 notebooks, as underthewether stated. You could get a pretty decent HP or Toshiba wide screen notebook with a Core2 Duo and at least 1GB of memory for less than that at your local Best Buy or maybe even on Newegg...
- Invid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Kind of the point behind getting it pre-installed no?
*posted from my WPA encrypted-Ubuntu-running laptop. Remember kids! Those who can't...bitch, those who can...do! - Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10AGAIN!!!
- Donholio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Right... noticed that too... within SECONDS.
- aoimoku, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Why are all linux laptops a good $100+ more expensive than non-linux pre-installed ones? I love the look of the Azure, but I am not thinking about buying it if I have to pay the cost of a new macbook to get the specs I want. I don't have that kind of money.
- bombadier337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Website could probably still use a little work, but overall it's pretty awesome there are more of these Ubuntu PC companies popping up. I wonder if Shafetech sends out free case badges too???
- hugepedlar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Someone needs to market a linux PC with Wine or Cedega pre-installed (if licensing permits that), possibly with a support contract. Now that people buying new PCs have to consider "upgrading" to Vista, with all its problems, the opportunity to switch them to linux has never been more potent.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Really? Cause I had no idea this existed and will probably get one (or maybe one from system76).
Again.. more comment spam.
I don't want this in my forums, and I don't want it on Digg.
Buried. - Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@hugepedlar
I agree 100%, that would justify a little bit of a price increase for a Linux distro on a machine like these here... Anywho I ended up loading a copy of Dreamlinux onto my friends new Toshiba last weekend after his Vista upgrade went to pot on him. He had this Sonic Encoder driver failure issue that on their forums and via Vista's support stated to pretty much "Deal with it!" He isn't into gaming and wanted a machine that had a cool looking OS and to do some multi media stuff. Loaded up Dreamlinux 2.2 and he was blown away. It is rather impressive and free... The market for open source OS's have never been closer to mainstream as they are now. They have a ways to go, but it is looking brighter and brighter... - Donholio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8LOL stupid spammer...
- jasondew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ubuntu is "immune to viruses and spyware" and "your computer will never be infected."
Anyone else have a problem with this advertisement? - kerrle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7While I certainly appreciate resellers that support Linux, I have to question the technical competence of anyone who's shipping a Linux oriented computer with an ATI graphics chip. Their linux drivers have been terrible for everything above the Radeon 9200.
- SimonGray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How strange. Their most expensive laptops all come with the Pentium's while the cheaper ones have a Core 2 Duo...
- binaryloop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6New domain name: $10
Web hosting: $120
Web development: $600
Having your brand new site taken down by Digg.com and receiving a $1500 bandwidth bill: Priceless - Donholio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I won't buy anything from a company that spams Digg. Take a sec and look at this guy's submissions 5 of 9 for Shafttech. PLEASE go buy from system76. I am all for people running Linux, especially Ubuntu.
- rudesgeiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I am not all the impressed with their site, it looks like a half hearted attempt.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Linux is perfectly compatible with WPA encryption. It's the chipset manufacturers who design products not compatible with Linux.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Buy one, then in the terminal type:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop - Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why's he getting dugg down? He's absolutely right, the ATI drivers are terrible.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Great for low income families"
I'd say one of the 'xenia's would be a decent box for any one looking for a linux PC who doesn't want to build one themselves. - lostcny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5name should be Shafttech their site is down says alot about a computer company.
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea. I think both Shafetech and System76 buy the laptops wholesale from some other company and drop Ubuntu on them.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Probably a combination of two things. Companies like dell can afford to bulk buy their parts, which means they most likely get a rather cut rate. On the other hand, startups like system76 and shafetech don't have the same buying power, and therefore can't get hardware at the same price.
Another explanation is the sheer volume of crap you have on a prebuilt computer: aol free trials, trials for this and that. The company gets (most likely) good money to put all that crap onto the computers when they ship, which could lower the cost to consumers (if the company chose to pass those savings along)
Those are my two explanations, hope they make a little sense, i'm a bit tired right now.
cheers

Thats the problem with a lot of big brand companies, MS forces them to sell Windows with their machines due to the licensing involved to be able to offer Windows at all. - bcnewman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yup!
- Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dell sells both desktops and laptops without Windows...

http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/nseries_nb?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A lot of it has to do with volume. Dell / HP / Toshiba / etc order a lot of machines and are able to negotiate large volume contracts with hardware manufacturers.
What I'd like to see is the large hardware manufacturers start offering a no OS / Linux option and save the customer the cost of the Windows license. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's mostly because laptops require custom and unusual components that small companies that make linux laptops have trouble aquiring at a competitive price.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah. There's no real difference between the two.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Web 2.0 is meaningless market speak in any case.
- munozm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm receiving "Account suspended. Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible." when clicking the link.
I guess they aren't getting enough orders to pay the bills! - computerdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3site was down when I tried to access it, but based on comments I guess I'm not missing anything!
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The guy has a lot of ubuntu related stories yes, but his links to shafetech seem pretty benign and far between. Yeah, he might work for them but he contributes a lot of our top linux stories as well. I'm fine with that.
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You'll have to forgive the submitter, I believe he meat to say Web 0.2. Easy mistake to make.
- dolbex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's a pretty poor example of web 2.0 website. Why isn't this buried yet? People, read the link before you digg!
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nice spam by Ryan Delaney "President" of Shatfelch. http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:ERfXZlHBraQJ:shafetech.com/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_content%26task%3Dview%26id%3D24+shafetech&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us&client=firefox-a
- jffotooz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1make shiny half ass logo in ps - buy a bunch of cheap cases off newegg and load the most talked about OS on DIGG = advertisment....i hate people...and i hate their site
- dallasjfreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well the submitter should learn what Web 2.0 is before he/she claims anything to be Web 2.0
- Miso117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's like inviting ***** to try and spoil a good thing...
Oh, and a tinge of false advertising... - raxial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no business address prominently listed
no sale
shafe-what? - kripkenstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ASUS, I believe is the source for both companies (I could be wrong, though).
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I could build a Linux-friendly laptop I would, but I can't find the parts and I don't know how to build a laptop. I can find parts for and build a desktop, but not a laptop. And I'm looking for a real budget laptop. Like $600 or so.
