- NinjaBoy, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9Im a network admin / director of IT and i must say i recommend this program for securing app servers. But i also have to recommend that if you are building a firewall box you should at least check out

and other firewall based distro's - Roger, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Yet repulsively ugly.
- ZaZ2137, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7Looks deliciously handy.
- mr5150, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7neat solution but i use smooth firewall which works a real treat for my network needs.
enjoy: http://www.smoothwall.org/ - chrisinsocalif, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6If you have DD-wrt or Open WRT for your routers, you can compile great filtering techniques, ad-blocks and many other functions since its Linux based. Hopefully this will make it easier to produce code for your hardware based firewall.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4I always found graphical frontends for packet filtering harder and more confusing to use than just editing text files. That's just me though I guess
- NinjaBoy, on 08/15/2008, -3/+7^ ^ ^ That was me hacking into his account.
- NinjaBoy, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3dude, you have no clue what you are talking about. go ahead. build a windows firewall. I wont be sniffing your packets...nope. I LOVE windows, don't get me wrong, but linux is a GREAT cheap server, and i really don't know much that can beat a BSD firewall built with iptables other than expensive hardware based firewalls/gateways.
- imitokay, on 08/15/2008, -3/+6Everyone knows the best security is unplugging your ethernet cable and going outside ...
- cyborg, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3Finally, linux functionality, but with a GUI!
- Smegzor, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2OH *****! Thats my password too!!
- hexdump, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2I have used fwbuilder at home for years, and at work recently when we needed a software firewall. A commercial solution like CheckPoint Firewall-1 would have been overkill and over budget. That said, fwbuilder is a bit lacking in areas such as log analysis and intrusion detection, but there are some useful support script on the fwbuilder site.
- Vadi0, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Heh, afraid it's not even in Ubuntu repositories yet, nevermind default.
- zeusgodmann, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2BSD based pfSense is much better than all the Linux based firewall distros. It's no ASA 5500 but it works great.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Looks really sexy. I'm guessing it's something included with Ubuntu by default by it's ease of use and GTK gui.
- Culyt, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1But then they can sneak in and steal your data physically and also try on your underwear.
- derkles, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1My hardware firewall is Juniper Net Screen, but all my servers run iptables, but I use firehol to set iptables up.
Firehol: http://firehol.sourceforge.net/ - adragontattoo, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1I have a smoothwall on my home network, been using it for so long that last night when I tried to log into it so I could change some things, I realized I had no idea of what password I used.
Poor smoothwall is coming down tonight and being totally reimaged so it is up to date and I can add in a few bits that I now need to use. - tcpip4lyfe, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1I have IPCop running on a 1 gig SF flash card with the CopFilter add on installed. I must recommend that. Basically I have a slient, solid state, stateful packet inspection firewall with AV and anti-spam built in. All for free. Check it out if you have an old box laying around.

- dilbert, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Try Comodo firewall.

- D4CH, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Password for you firewall? hmm...
- JonnyHowTo, on 03/30/2009, -0/+0Check out Ideco Gateway - http://www.idecogateway.com
- perlabsrat, on 08/15/2008, -0/+0I have been using AtGuard forever with xp sp1 but its time I need sp2
due to apps that require SP2 to install. That being the case AtGuard
will not work with XP SP2 and the AtGuard beta project is dead so I'm
stuck looking for a replacement personal firewall (packet filter).
Ashampoo’s pro firewall is so far the leading contender but it still
lacks one feature if I use AtGuard as a baseline. That being the
ability to block an app based on an IP or domain. For those of you who
know AtGuard you know that its what creating a rule, the rule
assistant prompts you for:
* The current APP/Any App
* The current Port/Any Port
* The current Address/Any Address
* Gives the option to name the rule something other than filename.exe.
Eg:

I am looking for a firewall that offers this level of control when
defining an on the fly rule without the need to have to go into the
app and build a rule from scratch.
Can anyone make any recommendations?
I have heard of people using AtGuard wtih sp2 but so far it does not work on any install
I have tried it on. When installed it stops all web traffic until you disable it.
Thanks. - thallium205, on 08/15/2008, -1/+1I can't wait until Mcafee ports their firewall for Linux...
- bin2hex, on 08/15/2008, -0/+0FWbuilder is hardly a new thing, I mean I like it but is it news?
- aznpwnzor, on 08/15/2008, -2/+1the point was that this won't make linux more favorable to a greater number of users simply because of this single, yet crazy good, product. It's just people are used to what they have and capitalism works a certain way. It's like if something is not expensive, its not good. I love windows for its wide range and I love linux for its...well...openness lol but really not everybody wants to be able to tinker with their OS take Mac fanboys.

Thanks. - noPCtoday, on 08/15/2008, -3/+1my firewall password is ******
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -3/+1No but seriously most people running a non-windows system in a home environment don't really need firewalls IMO. Its windows applications and services that blindly send and receive information without your knowing is why you do need a good firewall when running windows.
If in the case where your information is being targeted by a pro, your firewall isn't much good unless you really know what you're doing. - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -6/+1^ ^ ^ That was me hacking into his account
- mctom987, on 08/15/2008, -8/+2Firewalls? Who needs 'em? I don't.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -8/+1This is only spam...LAME.
- aznpwnzor, on 08/15/2008, -13/+1THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP
.....oh this runs on windows and mac too
don't get me wrong I love linux but only if i have windows for serious biznaz like games
