- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A more generic version that includes preliminary steps for adding a Solaris Network install and Windows network installations as well.

But you can't always assume that, of course.
And personally, I believe the pxe install is more convenient because you don't have to fiddle with disk images - hekar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow nice this is a very important task of an IT guy and proves to be handy when you need to install linux on a few computers
- tlarkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have already been running PXE boot server for Linux for a while now and been using it to do the following over the network:
Run Memtestx86
netinstall linux distros
image windows clients
create master images
multicast/unicast
boot client into freeDOS
I have been using DRBL found here http://drbl.sourceforge.net and think it is an awesome package. It is easy to set up and better from the looks of what the article mentions. However, there are some snags with DRBL and trying to intergrate it into an existing enterprise solution. - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@CrazyZ
I think you're exaggerating, only the first and most of the second pages were about actually setting up the PXE server. The other 7 were details on how to set up various distributions on it. - Pimpalicious316, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i am now casting my vote for nerdiest title of the year. congrats :)
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4dd is another option, assuming identical PC's.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no doubt it's possible to do something _like_ this with Windows, and possible OS X as well, but as a student I sure as hell can't do it for free. I used to have a few old machines I was given lying around and I set them up as diskless thin clients using PXE. It was fun, and a good learning experience.
Windows licensing makes this unrealistic for small shops or people like myself. With Linux (and BSDs, whatever else) you can set this up without shelling out tons of cash. Even kids with a couple PCs in the house can try it out to learn how it works. The entire process can be modified because the code is open.
If for a second we just forget the fact that I prefer Linux to Windows, if I hade to choose between not doing it at all and doing it with Linux I will take the Linux solution anyway. The license makes all the difference in this case my friend. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3INTRUDER ALERT! There's only one three-letter acronym in it, which makes it barely nerdy at all. ;-)
... and just for fun: "let's see you guys do this with Windows or Mac OS X!" - 1021, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can someone point me to a guide on how to do this with a windows server as the PXE server?
- twinprism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tlarkin: I'm curious, did you write up anything on your experiences with DRBL and what challenges you had integrating it. I'd greatly appreciate your ideas to save me some time evaluating a system. What do you think, what are the biggest gotchas?
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been doing this for years with systemimager. Not only is it great for quick base installs, it can be used for backups and versioning.
Just make sure your bios/NIC supports it. - rat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Novell Has a Great Solution Called Zenworks. We use it on Campus rolls reinstalls out like Crazy...
- tlarkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0we own a license to zenworks and use it to push out apps but have not tested out the imaging solution of it yet
- xekhz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I really prefer fai http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/
It seems to me that it is much easyer - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@nofxjunkee
WTF are you talking about. Windows has RIS, sysprep, SetupManager, and a slew of other image and network push friendly install options and it's SIMPLE to setup and manage, at least it doesn't take 9 pages of instructions to setup. - jagg, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Is anyone else having problems with digg right now? When I click on any previous page button (the 2, 3, 4, etc buttons on the bottom) I get the "We'll be back shortly" digg page that shows up when they are doing upgrades. This has been going on for more than a day for me.
Sorry for posting this here. I know it's not the correct place.
