- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24It's actually Beagle. Which predates spotlight by over a year.
- samKreuzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This is a nice feature! Really practical.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14the newest version of dapper has this gnome. Look on ubuntuforums.org on how to upgrade from breezy to dapper if you want to mess around with the bleeding edge.
Otherwise wait until dapper gets its official release next month. - niran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@thisisgil
Even if Ubuntu is overrated, which I don't think it is, it is still far better than Foresight. One of the most important aspects of a Linux distribution for a new user is the amount of help available from the community. Compare the Foresight community mailing list[1] with Ubuntu's[2]. The forums for each compare similarly. Random distros of the week might be fine for experienced Linux users, but new users need an established community. Just because you think it's cool to not be using the "popular" distro doesn't mean that you should make someone else suffer for it.
@Flankk
I'm not sure if the deskbar applet is present in the latest beta release of dapper, but it'll definitely be present in the final release since it's in the desktop seed[3].

Proof that Deskbar is included in the latest version of Dapper/Gnome. - zootm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As the other reply pointed out, Apple aren't responsible for the innovation here. They just happened to be the first people who added it by default to the desktop. This is an excellent system showing the power of the Beagle system, and various other plugins. Good stuff.
- JargonScott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Makes me want to go to the bathroom and take an "Asscast".
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Excellent demonstration, this is really where things are going. Pity that the Beagle Live integration wasn't shown, that's the most impressive part in my book.
- fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7wow gnome is getting really good, I may even switch from KDE, although KDE has got some good apps like konqueror or amaroK
- neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
Looks very useful. Wish he'd made the screen smaller though. I couldn't see all of it at the same time. I had to reload after realising that the good stuff(tm) was happening at the top and I could forget about the bottom. It also played too fast on my comp. Again I had to reload a few times to catch all of what the bubbles were saying and properly absorb what he was typing and the results he got. - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@w0mbat: the video is hosted on Google's servers, that's what Millamber was talking about.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Very Nice... Great Job!
He should redo that screencast on a system with XGL to make it look better. - StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A "screencast" is a video of someone's desktop. If I make a Paint.net tutorial or something by recording my desktop actions as a video, that video is called a "screencast."
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's alright, but I don't think it does the "live" integrated search sort of thing, which makes it far inferior in terms of features. I don't see any reason it couldn't add it at some point, though. :)
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4KDE does exactly that. and it's really annoying when an application is on the right of a second monitor, and its menu is on the left of the lefthand monitor
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Whoa. That's pretty cool. When I first saw it utilizing a search engine, I thought, "Why only Google?" But then I saw WP for Wikipedia and I was in awe. I can't wait to try it! :-)
- Milamber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Finally! Someone using google's bandwidth to the fullest :) Interesting... wonder if the link will go down because of traffic or because of google noticing it sucking a lot of bandwidth. Hopefully neither!
Deskbar is also looking very handy. Any word on how much of your resources this thing sucks up? - zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple have patents on the "menu bar at top" thing. Which is a part of the reason that it was never implemented in Windows, either.
- paulfarag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you're running Dapper, are up to date with updates, and don't happen to see it listed with the other applets, try installing deskbar-applet from synaptic or from the command line with:
sudo apt-get install deskbar-applet - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Actually, I am using Ubuntu Dapper with Gnome 2.14.0 and there is no deskbar applet.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't it hilarious how all the Apple Fanboys believe that Apple invented desktop search? I've been using 'Spotlight' on my windows machine since before Tiger was even announced
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4no kiding - the first thing i saw was "screencast" - honestly, wth - screencast??
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Similar I think, yes, but more like Apple's Spotlight system. Somewhere between the two, I suppose. :)
- rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's what I was thinking too. Quicksilver also has a big list of plugins. Hopefully there will be cross-pollination between the two projects, and both Mac and Linux users will benefit!
Also, it would be nice to have some sort of command-line version of the deskbar. - Odwalla, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I see that by "screencast" you mean "streaming video". Do we really have to come up with new BS words for everything?
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also run amarok on Gnome [Mandriva Linux 2006]
- NoOnEx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2deskbar is like beagle on steroids, works great for me!
- ejstacey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Did you even read the other comments? Or did you just post randomly?
This technology pre-dates spotlight and quicksilver. - Sparticuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's pretty cool...very useful if you don't like to use the trackpad on a laptop
- nagohdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I made the leap to Ubuntu on my laptop, still working up the balls to go full desktop. I just have to much running on the desktop, \mapped xbox MC \mapped replaytv ect.... but the more i see of things like this and the XGL its making it easier and easier to drop Windows alltogether. I also use my Mac Mini about 80% of the time...i guess I like eye candy.
dugg it. - sedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wasting your time. the ebuild ain't there yet. try monday.
- FarcePest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just picked it up on Ubuntu Dapper today, looks useful, although to get Google searches you need to get an API key from Google, which is a small inconvenience.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alright, so the deskbar is not bundled with Gnome in Dapper. It is included in the repositories. You hardly need to upgrade to get a new applet anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is that similar to Quicksilver or Launchbar on Mac OSX?
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its not streaming video.
Its a screen shot presentation, In some cases new words are actually a good thing. And i like screencast. It defines that it is taken from shots of the screen itself and not just one and not a video of the screen.
Its made with http://www.debugmode.com/wink/
Actually i first saw these being used for graphic program tutorials. - w0mbat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Erm, you do know it's not ACTUALLY searching google everytime someone views that - it's just playing the screencast of him searching google.
Big digg for usability bonus! Newcomers to Linux are going to find this very easy to get to grips with and very helpful! - nograz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I just built my new Gentoo system and I am still in the process of customizing it to how I want it.
Actually doing a world upgrade now because of Gnome 2.14's release yesterday. Will be using Deskbar for sure! - ywwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had an older version of deskbar for a while now and it's really useful. I have the default search as a dictionary search, and it's handy to be able to copy and paste words I don't know from the browser to the applet.
It's nice to see a lot of new features in 2.14, I feel like 2.10 and 2.12 were sort of ho-hum releases with not much new stuff. - cliedwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some of the same functions for Windows: http://www.bayden.com/SlickRun/
I find SlickRun really useful and have been using it for a long time. One day I'll get the courage to switch to Linux. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My first thought about this was HOLY CRAP, IT'S SLICKRUN! I've used SR in XP forever, and seeing this Deskbar in Ubuntu is yet another thing that'll make me be a 60/40 Linux user instead of a 60/40 Windows user
- Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1define:screencast
http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Ascreencast
" * A screencast is a recording of computer screen output, usually containing audio narration typically published as a video file. However, the technology has existed for much longer. Screencasts are typically created to produce software and web application demonstrations. This was mostly done within corporations as a way to facilitate employee training. However, further interest has been sparked through the increased blogging trend, which has eased content publishing." - blueorder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I run amaroK on Gnome (Ubuntu 5.10) and it runs just fine.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool but the movie plays so quickly! i can barely catch up.
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It also utilized yahoo as well
- arunkv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hm? The flash file is at: http://browserbookapp.sourceforge.net/deskbar-2-14-screencast.swf which is on SourceForge and not Google.
- firefusion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Looks awesome. As soon as the new Ubuntu is out i'm installing it again.
I wish he'd give it a better icon though. That one makes it look like a cheap cousin of OS X. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"streaming video", yes. of a /screen/
- RobGamble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I said the same. Competition between KDE and Gnome is a good thing, but if you ever have occasion to run apps from both you have double overhead and that just plain sucks. Being able to live ONLY in Gnome or KDE is where it's at, so it's nice to know you can be entirely happy in either.
- mknepher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you use epiphany and create some smart bookmarks, deskbar will use those for web searches. See http://raphael.slinckx.net/blog/2006-03-15/epiphany-is-hype-get-over-it for more.
- podious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Takes a while to load, but well worth the watch.
