and yes I speak for all Mac users. :P - newhand988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1linux is good!
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gentoo is out of Germany so there will always be that atleast.
- mathie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Innovations and protections of innovation always go hand in hand. Let's hope the lawyers are not too greedy to stall the Linux adoption.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** that if they do something about this i will shoot myself!

***** lawyers - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unlike our fellow Digger, GhostFreeman, who wrote "Say no to Software Patents," I understand the need for the patent system. But holy crap, the whole thing is out of control!
People are getting patents for technologies that don't event exist as yet. Such as methods for teleporting matter and direct electrical interfacing with the human brain. It's crazy.
And some people might think, so what! After all, if or when these technologies are ever invented what are the odds of it actually matching the patent? But there are two problems with this willingness to accept:
1) Some of these goofy patent applications for not-yet-invented technology seem so generic that just about any "real" invention will probably overlap somewhat.
2) I wonder if some of the people applying for these fanciful patents are simply hoping to get a big check from the "real" inventor in exchange for not tying them up in court for a zillion years. - colemanvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha well if linux goes then I guess I'll have to re install osx on my pc cause I dispise Windows...
- elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is FUD. Nothing more. Linux has nothing to fear, other than fear itself.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Say no to Software Patents.
- swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's a stupid title. Lawyers don't want to get rid of linux, they just provide legal services. the title should be Linux vs. everyone who wants to make a legal claim against linux
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FUD, FUD, FUD. Attacking Linux is like attacking IBM and Novell. SCO is learning the hard way why that is such a tremendously bad idea. IBM and Novel have about as many patents as copyrights, I suspect.
The patent commons exists more to foster OSS development on technologies those patents protect. - TerrenceLP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0re-write
It don't matter... Like drugs... We want them, we will use them and always find way to make them. All lawyers will go to hell, it say so in the bible. Patents are bogus anyway, they halt evolution yet evolution can't be halted! - TerrenceLP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It don't matter... Like drugs... - MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0software patents go too far...
- itideasdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't sweat it. There's always going to be some suit that thinks he can get his hand into something. These guys live their lives by screwing over other people. How much can they make out it? It seems that's their only thought.
Now granted if Linux violates software infringement laws, the lawyers would have just cause (based on the law).
Maybe it's time to come up with a new OS. Call it Linux Redux. Get a bunch of open-source guys together and have them come up with a new Kernel. Then build it up from there like Gentoo Linux has done. Slowly you could get a sweet install that wouldn't be based on the current Linux kernel or model.

http://www.it-ideas.com - kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So does anyone actually have a list of patients that Linux has infringed on? How broad are these patents? I haven't seen any proof unless Microsoft has a patient on windowed operating systems, mouse pointers...or even text.
- qwertme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linux is not that great, people should start looking a Solaris now that it's open source. It's a very well built OS and I imagine most of the Patent problems are dealt with by Sun.

Solaris is good on servers, but Linux is still better suited for desktop use. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tux vs. Lawyers. Penguin needs to kick some ass. That's all I'm sayin.
