Samba team denounces Novell/Microsoft patent pact

linux-watch.com — The Samba team, which is responsible for software that enables Linux and Windows systems to share files and printers, says it "disapproves strongly" of Novell's recently announced patent agreement with Microsoft. "Using patents as competitive tools in the free software world is not acceptable," the group says.

  • troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1play nicely withwindows filesharing...??? read the ubutnu guide on how to use with windows file sharing and it runs into several pages... not what I call playing nice....

    Look at Samba - it's a prime target for a Microsoft patent assault. The Samba devs don't use any of Microsoft's copyrighted code, they've built everything from scratch to try and play nicely with Windows File Sharing, they've had to work hard for every single packet of interoperability. But if Novell lends validity to Microsoft's patents of mass destruction, they might decide they want to use them.
