- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+12Give me your IP address and I'll let you know.
- cohortq, on 07/02/2008, -1/+12Oh I have that same issue. Here's my ip 192.168.2.3
Can you tell me if it'll work? Thanks! - inactive, on 07/02/2008, -4/+13It's still quiet in here... can you hear the echo?
- noseeme, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9HOLY *****!!! A software post on the front page!!!
- cplusplus, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Some nifty new features - like encryption.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -3/+8Editing samba manually i always get it to work right. But using front end apps, i can't seem to get it working correctly, i wish they would release it with a front end/gui Or maybe easy sharing options, hell, maybe even a "wizard"
- courtjester555, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5A double post AND a ***** comment? We call that one "the one-two punch"
- mossblaser, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6For certain things, well, on an easy-to-use level, samba does work better than the "native" alternatives on linux and as such is used rather widely amoungst linux users. Anyhow, excelent to hear! Also interesting that they've moved to the GPL 3 license...
- bipolar, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5Er... if you RTA you'll see that the encryption functionality was created by the Samba team and that it doesn't even have an implementation on Windows yet. However, Microsoft is free to implement it as it's a patent and royalty free system, with no restrictions.
- alexbu, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4please stop the broadcast noise (no echo-reply for you)
- mrBitch, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4You are an idiot.
Just because MS use SMB protocols does not mean they invented them.
Microsoft "borrowed" (ie. ripped off) existing SMB network protocols and then made sure they do what Microsoft does best - adopt a standard and then crap all over it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block
"Server Message Block (SMB) operates as an application-level network protocol mainly used to provide shared access to files, printers, serial ports, and miscellaneous communications between nodes on a network. It also provides an authenticated Inter-process communication mechanism.
Most usage of SMB involves computers running Microsoft Windows: in Microsoft environments users often know it simply as "Microsoft Windows Network". (Non-Windows users often use the NFS protocol to achieve similar functionality.)" - bipolar, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4Wow... what a troll you are. I should have known better. Idiot...
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3I will agree, you can do that in linux to, its just not 100% perfect sometimes, same with vista, Xp seemed to be the easiest to share files
- mossblaser, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Quite the opposite - most would regard microsoft's involvement in SMB stuff as being an embrace-extend-extinguish operation.
- nunofgs, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I understand it's a limitation of the client OS, but there's much that Samba could do about this... specifically, the thing I described!
Samba could allow me to simply replace some troublesome characters with valid ones. They already allow you to change extensions, so why not instances of characters? - mrBitch, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Ahh HA HA HA HA HA HA
You make a statement that Samba is stealing tech from Microsoft (which is BS - MS did NOT develop SMB, they just adopted an existing SMB protocol and then crapped all over the standards).
You then post a link to "prove" your BS statement.
Only problem is that the link you posted explains the following :
1. Microsoft deviated away from SMB protocols on purpose.
2. MS was FORCED to divulge the info to the Samba team by an EU court ruling.
3. MS was fined $338.6 million
LOL - maybe you should actually read the articles that you use as your bogus "proof".
LOL again. - nunofgs, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Hey maybe you guys can help me out. I frequently download "linux isos" to my ubuntu server where I later retrieve the files using samba.
The problem is when there is a colon ":" in the name of the file. My ext3 filesystem has no problem using colons in a filename but when I try to view them from my Mac or a Windows machine, they freak out.
I know there is a way to replace extensions in samba.conf (so you could rename all .html to .txt for example) but I can't seem to get it to rename all colons to underscores for example.
Please help, I'm getting tired of ssh'ing into the machine to manually rename my "isos". - emer, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2A couple of useful links on this topic:

In short its a limitation of the client OS your accessing it from. Nothing Samba can do about this. - usrlocalbin, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3http://news.samba.org/announcements/3.2_press_rele ...
Bured as spam. - twoboxen, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2wow... that was even bad when compared to only bad posts.
- daftman, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1You can do that in Ubuntu. Just go into a folder and click sharing and it automatically share that folder. It even install samba and set that up in case you didn't have that installed.
- IHaveIssues, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4Sorry about the noob question but does this version work with the new Ubuntu release or is it Ubuntu's problem to fix?
- antdude, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Wait for Ubuntu's release/update?
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -6/+4It is called windows.... Right click on any folder anywhere, select the share option, and then click ok.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1No, it has worked perfectly everytime I have used it since about 1994 or so. On the other hand, it is only the last couple of years that Samba has been usable in some circumstances. Of particular note, is with programs that use file based databases, they never quite got the file locks down right until very recently.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -5/+2It is not trolling to point out that Samba agreed to not steal anything more from microsofts network stack.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/12/20/Microsof ...
It is trolling to call someone a troll however. - inactive, on 07/02/2008, -5/+1my bad, I didnt realize samba had agreed not to steal anymore work from microsoft, and in return Microsoft promised not to destroy Linux.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -6/+2LOL, windows has it built in. Right click on any folder on any version of windows since about Windows NT, follow the dialog until your directory is shared with the people you want to share it with, then click ok. All done.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -6/+1You mean they stole some more stuff from windows...
- leerayIG88, on 07/02/2008, -6/+1Samba...welcome to the jungle.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -7/+1So the best and most widely used file sharing network protocol on Mac and Linux was directly stolen from windows? Say it ain't so! LOL.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -8/+2http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/12/20/Microsof ...
Suck on it. - digjam, on 07/02/2008, -11/+3What else would you expect from Samba team..??? to release Hip Hop 3.2?
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -11/+1Just revisiting to rub some salt in that wound, Last December Samba agreed with Microsoft that they were stealing their stuff, and agreed to stop stealing their stuff, and in return, Microsoft wouldn't sue them out of existance.
- jattsona, on 07/02/2008, -13/+1I never gotten it working with Ubuntu and *****, crappy, dumb, stupid, gay windows. Anyone got a link to tutorial? lol
