- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+31Congrats to the team. Persuade the Italian Parliament to choose Sabayon BE, not Novell's SUSE. Don't let them pay Microsoft some so-called 'tax' for GNU/Linux.
- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Are excess comments a good thing?
- matsyes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Absolutely brilliant Linux OS. Has pretty much every driver and application that you can possibly need and many you don't know what to do with.
- SeBBBe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Are excess applications a good thing though?
- orangeparty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Gentoo for people with social life, what more could you possibly want ?
- daedius, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19Wow! I'm practically drooling over that release feature list =P ' '
- Xorg 7.3 ( what a surprise! )
- ext4 ( I wonder how stable this is =P )
- SecondLife (w007!)
- VMWare support ( double++ good )
and perhaps best of all "Sabayon Core" :3 mmm
WTG Team Sabayon! You all are so effing amazing! - jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15isn't "Rock Solid" and "bleeding edge" a contradiction of terms
- chrozz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Sabayon is a highly suggested linux distro if you are inexperienced with linux, or if you are very experienced. If youve ever tried to get gentoo or another version of linux running without much success(due to video drivers, xorg.conf, wireless) try it out. it just seems to work.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Is this like ubuntu or something? *kidding* Nice to see other distros hitting the Digg front page :-)
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8If it's anything like Gentoo, stuff gets updated as it comes out, instead of on a 6 month cycle.
- robjective, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Since Mandrake 7, I have toyed with Linux off and on. Usually just enough to get it installed (if it would install) and then I would run into the hardware configuration wall and give up. I'm fairly adept at Windows, but I couldn't get the hang of Linux. That changed with Ubuntu, when I finally found a distro that just plain old works out of the box. But I was looking for something a little more sophisticated. Sabayon has been the Windows replacement distribution for me. It installs without a hitch and Nvidia display drivers and Intel wifi drivers install by default.
- benfeldman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Woo! Finally! There's been some serious work done to make 3.4 better, I can just tell because of the fact that it took longer than expected. The people behind Sabayon are really committed to this project, and you just know that the extra time can only mean a much better system. Can't wait for the torrent to finish!
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Sabayon is my distro of choice (note the icon in my avatar) and has been since I discovered it at 3.2. Its totally worth checking out, ESPECIALLY if you just want to try something or play around with little commitment...because you can get much, much more of the (good parts of the) Linux experience with just the liveDVD or a fresh, unmodified install. In the process, you also get to skip many potential sources for a bad Linux experience. It's my pocket ace for trumping local non-nerds who like to show off their new Vista machines. "Wow, that's cool. But check this out. I can make YOUR computer 10 times cooler in 30 seconds flat." Ubuntu can't quite do the same.
- K3ITHK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Earlier today I downloaded loop 3 wtf.
- jopache1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How is the ext4 filesystem?
- Purin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I've been really curious to try Sabayon out, but I almost don't want to let go of the too-easy-to-use Aptitude package manager that Kubuntu has.
Can someone fill a noob in on what might make Sabayon better than Kubuntu? - parax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Stable compared to what? Everyone describes Linux distros as stable, so is this one extra-stable compared to the most popular Linux distros (PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, Slackware, etc.) or stable as compared to Windows but not quite as stable as Linux normally is?
- jopache1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5How does this distro compare to Ubuntu?
- SeBBBe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I had this installed on my computer for a little while, but I found it a little unstable and too bleeding edge for permanent use. It sure is a great way to conveniently try out the newest and greatest technologies, though. I found it while searching for a distro to try out Beryl without having to install anything or mess around. Recommended if you want to try out some new stuff. Not so much if you want a stable desktop distro.
- dyingmuppet, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Very Great Distro, It has everything you need and its very stable
- xNaquada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What do you think?

lxnay> i'm the sabayon linux chief arch
lxnay> Just wanna know the implications of integrating paludis
ciaranm> you use binaries, right?
ciaranm> paludis doesn't do binaries currently, and when it does it will use a different format
ciaranm> that's probably the big issue...
ciaranm> other than that there's nothing major. with 0.26 we'll even be able to do special
distribution-specific stuff for you... you'd just need to give us a .conf file for your
distro and compile with --with-default-distribution=sabayon
lxnay> well if you devs are interested in sabayon, just contact me
ciaranm> lxnay: we don't care about sabayon, in that none of us use it. but we have no objection
to supporting it, if there's demand from users
lxnay> bah
lxnay> die alone then
-!- lxnay has left #paludis
ring a bell? :) - murlox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Wow, they already have compiz fusion, cfs, in addition of ext4? That's quite bleeding edge. Hopefully, it's just as good as 3.3, which is frankly one of the best Live CD distro out there.
- slaver, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Well, I've used the previous version of Sabayon and was somewhat disappointed. The impression I got is that it's a system aimed at disgruntled Gentoo users sick of compiling everything but still wanting to use Gentoo like system. I though it's not going to be a problem to sync to the portage tree, I was wrong. If it wasn't for years of experience with Gentoo I'd be screwed. They had their own package management system but it was far from useful. Also, I hardly call it stable -- most (all?) it's packages are marked unstable in the portage tree. I liked that everything 'just worked (tm)' after install though.
Overall it's an odd mix of pain in the ass and convenience. The project seems unfocused, and if it has a focus it's not clear. For example they say they won't break compatibility with portage, yet it's a major, undocumented task to get in sync. It's a distro for hobbyists, even more so then Gentoo. Defiantly not recommended for your everyday rig. Keep in mind that this is based on the previous version. - ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Pretty much the same as ext3...
wikipedia ftw
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4 - onyxrev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is this a Live DVD?
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Has more ***** installed out of the box (like Compiz Fusion formerly Beryl) and it's a little more complicated to use....for instance, I had to ask around quite a bit before realizing that ifconfig needed to run as root...(not true on Ubuntu.) It installs KDE and GNOME if i remember correctly and has ugly red mouse cursors that I could never figure out how to change! It's based on Gentoo as opposed to Debian like Ubuntu. To me Gentoo is a power user's linux but I don't think Sabayon is real hard, just a little getting used to like anything thing new. And it does have a package manager similar to Ubuntu & Debian's Synaptic.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4i hear the ex4 file system is supposed to be 10 to 15% faster.
- edgevision, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10Best Linux distribution I have ever used. Rock solid and bleeding edge at the same time. For me, an OS like Ubuntu wasn't enough, I'm looking for the latest and greatest. Sabayon is exactly that, and more.
- Vash63, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sweet, I run Gentoo but I'd recommend this for anyone that doesn't want to go through hell. I personally prefer emerge to apt-get any day of the week.
- deletarus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That isn't entirely true. For the 3D accelerated portions of Sabayon to work, yes you need a 3D accelerator (obviously). But Sabayon will work perfectly well without using those. You can run Sabayon without compiz-fusion and use the normal KDE or GNOME interfaces just fine. I assume (haven't tested it) that it will run just fine on older hardware.
- totedati, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7for me sabayon is the best livedvd distro ... and this means a lot in the battle with windows empire ... and for causal linux joe users still trapped to windows world, but not lost forever ...
sabayon is a tool, a axe, in a battle ... a battle for a good ideal ... to fredom all computer user from marketing evil tricks .... - spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your story is just like mine except that even Ubuntu didn't work with my hardware out of the box. I'm downloading Sabayon now so I hope you haven't gotten my hopes up for nothing!
Here's a nice fast mirror hosting the x86/x64 mini edition if anyone wants. I'm getting 750KB/s solid.
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/sabayonlinux/SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.3b.miniEdition.iso - 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because there are excess applications for everyone, that also means that everyone has what they need with one base installation. For a desktop OS, I don't really see why they're a bad thing.
- tuzziel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5@KalleK
Its not steeling its now called forking, get the lingo dude. - xswag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3# Gaming oriented: featuring,
# Savage 2
# FlightGear
# DangerDeep
# Warsow
# Nexuiz
# Torcs
# Battle of Wesnoth
# Second Life
What did I not read correctly? Featuring? That sounds like its included. - weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've never thought as more options as a bad thing... but than again I also don't use any Apple products =D
- deletarus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can get the 3.3 mini (beryl) or wait about a week and the 3.4 mini should be out. (CD instead of DVD)
- tetsura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Seems stupid to me to call a distro stable when it uses window managers still in alpha.
- Giga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As far as Linux stability goes, Sabayon is not particularly stable.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sabayon's meant to appeal more to the bleeding-edge (Which is why it's Gentoo based) over Stability. If you want stability, go to CentOS or FreeBSD
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No, and it doesn't necessarily have to work out that way in practice either.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I think the main dev (lxnay) is a complete and total ***** asshat. He's an idiot and he caused the other lead dev who's intelligent (cvill64) to leave. I don't believe Sabayon's innovating, they're just trying to make a Gentoo-like version of Ubuntu...and no one needs that...
- Izzie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3IMHO better on all accounts. bleeding edge, stable, comes with both kde and gnome. usable by beginners and by experienced users.
two main differences are:
* sabayon is gentoo-based, ubuntu is debian-based
* ubuntu has taken a very clear and strong position about bug#1, AFAIK sabayon has made no such thing
another thing is that sabayon requires 3D acceleration to work, meaning no sabayon for old machines. - ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why would anybody want choice?
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, crash and burn. It took over an hour to install just the 700MB one and when I rebooted I chose Sabayon from GRUB but it wouldn't boot. I then realized that it had installed GRUB on my Windows drive even though I set my secondary HDD to primary. This worked fine for me with every other distro I've tried but not this one. I just spent 45 minutes figuring out how to flush the MBR while retaining the partition table and making WinXP bootable again.
Also, the fdisk utility listed both my HDDs as SATA even though one is IDE. I suspect this might be why it didn't install. It said it was installing to SDA when it should have been HDA. Again, this worked fine in every other distro I tried.
My very limited experience with this distro is pretty poor. :( I'll try it in a VM because you gave it such high praise, robjective. - renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yes
- lxnay, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Having bleeding edge things that you can disable (but obviously you don't do that) it's not a stability issue. If you want to have a stable system, then just don't use Beryl/Compiz Fusion nor Ext4 filesystem. Is that so difficult to understand?
- gnomeuser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I hate to bring up Vista.. but it is evidence that taking more time doesn't always lead to a better product. :)
