- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23My favorite "feature" of Sabayon is when the "Menu" button disappears. Everyone says this distro is ready for primetime, but its totally unstable. I really liked the eye candy, but I reinstalled Sabayon SIX TIMES in two weeks because it so buggy.
You can digg me down if it makes you feel better. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Sabayon is great because it's always the first distro to implement many new Linux technologies. Works great out-of-the-box.
I'd highly recommend trying out the LiveDVD and being amazed if you want to branch out and try something other than Ubuntu. - danielgary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sabayon Linux 3.3 does not include Beryl 0.2, therefore it does not include the "latest bleeding edge Beryl"
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Just like Gentoo, it is most certainly /not/ a distribution for the impatient. Booting the LiveCD will take /years/. Installing the system will take /years/. emerge --sync (updating) will take /years/. Compiling all of your software after the installation takes /years/."
Even on my fairly slow laptop (1.8GHz Pentium M, 512MB RAM) the LiveCD booted up reasonably quickly, and installed in about 30 minutes. I never particularly liked Gentoo (Mostly because I don't see the benefit of compiling everything from source-code), the LiveCD installer installs everything from binaries, there's no compiling (Considering the amount of software that comes with the distro, I imagine it would literaly take years to compile.. Well, over a week anyway..)
Sabayon is the only distro I've used that didn't require any fiddling to get stuff working - Graphics-card drivers and 3D acceleration worked straight away, as with the rest of the laptops hardware, there's a lot of software installed, without a SUSE-like 10-different-text-editors/browsers/RSS Readers/etc.
My only slightly problem was is because I chose Gnome as the default desktop enviroment, and the KDE side of things has had more work put into it (For example, there was no obvious way to set a static IP for the wireless card in Gnome, but in KDE it was simple)
"But if you already like Gentoo then go ahead and give it a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Also, you'll need 10.5 GB+ of hard disk space"
As I said up a bit, I never really liked Gentoo, but having everything preinstalled and working certainly makes Gentoo easier to get into. Still not sure if I like having to wait an hour or more just to reinstall Amarok (compared to the few-minute download using something like apt-get), but given the trouble people seem to have installing Gentoo, a pre-compiled version of Gentoo could be a good starting point
"but its totally unstable"
It's not totally unstable, it's unstable on your computer - I never had any problems with stability, aside from the fact my graphics card doesn't really like Beryl (Although it worked better on Sayabon than in Ubuntu) - zleilndka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's the only real complaint I have with it. It has TOO much stuff with it. I don't need like 12-24 different media players. Just Amarok and MPlayer/VLC. It's nice to have all of that stuff, but I would be using less than 1/4's of the programs they put in. Maybe if they let you choose from list of all those programs it'd be a lot better (ie: Check box the programs you want during installation). I do like that Beryl worked right off the bat on my Radeon 7500le (pretty time consuming on other distros).
- LogicX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've setup some FTP hosting of my torrent downloads. Plenty of bandwidth to go around. (30Mbit/sec+) Enjoy!

I'm also seeding the torrents on a different box&provider, currently pushing 50Mbit/sec. - SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -2/+5This distro is ridiculous. It has all the apps you will ever need right out of the box. Almost 0 configuration. There is no need to compile anything. Iv been using it for a few months now and Ive maybe had a total of 3 programs Ive had to compile into gentoo. Its very VERY userfriendly, in my opinion as a linux noob myself. I found it easier to set up than even ubuntu (please dont kill me ubuntu people...). Beryl works like a charm with no configuration needed. The only downside to the whole distro is the documentation isn't perfect yet, but I found their IRC people to be very helpful and responsive. Give the live DVD a try anyways.
- kg4gyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice distro, but VI/VIM wasn't on the CD at all. Sacrifices what a good number of us need to look pretty. I'd rather have less fanciness and more familiarity.
- pixelat3d, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Please, please, please...
STOP calling message boards BBS's ... they're not.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBS
learn your damn history!
grats reply button... /sigh. - xdre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@danielgary: Is Beryl 0.2.0r2 close enough? :)
- Toallpointswest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly!!
If you're using an ATI card with Sabayon, you need to set it's boot options!! I ran into major issues before I did, but after... not a one! I found using the "res=" and "refresh=" options were essential especially when using the LiveCD (DVD). YMMV. - kozaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some guy here look like he's not so tolerant about people --not from US/UK/Australia who *try* to spell a foreign language (i.e. English)-- as well as they can :-(
As an example I use the Spell checker every time so there are less errors in a message i write.
So please please please! stay calm & a bit more *open* minded, like in *open* source ;)
Anyway, thank you for the link & info pixelat3d.
+1 for giga :) - easydom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For me, Sabayon was the easiest distribution to use. It simply worked for me out of the box, and the inclusion of Nvidia drivers and Beryl eye candy made it an even better choice for me. The part that I LOVED was that once you got connected to the Internet, LIVE help was available for you. The community seems to be a really nurturing set as they would take the time, to LITERALLY walk me through any problems I had and more importantly they would explain WHY I has having the problem and WHAT I was doing to remedy it.
This distribution made me sit up and take notice of Linux, no disrespect to any other distros, and it had me really scratching my head wondering how Open Source software could work so well compared to my beloved Media Centre lol.
I really hope the developers continue their good work and when I can afford to do so, I will be donating money to ensure that development continues.
I have found it to be quite a NOOB friendly disto. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Easy Installation, works great out of the box, but it's the most bloated distro ever.
If you can, get the mini-edition and give that a try. - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a (relatively... Sabayon is still a maturing project) long-time Sabayon user, I think it's awesome to see Sabayon progressing like it is. I hear the complaints of people trying out Sabayon with every release, and the list is getting smaller and smaller. Features are being added and problems are being resolved quickly. Sabayon is the fastest developing distro out there. Period.
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For pete's sake...I JUST downloaded and burned 3.26, after checking last night for a newer version and seeing 3.3 wasn't out yet. *smacks forehead*
- Bender4Pharoah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your ftp site won't allow anonymous login. What login do you want us to use?
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure what you consider "hardcore," but I've found Sabayon much more stable and robust than Ubuntu. I haven't tried Gentoo specifically, but I was first drawn to Sabayon because it was a nicer entry point into the Gentoo family of distros.
I'm particularly enamored with the package management that actually manages packages. It leaves me feeling free to actually try things without worrying about clogging up my machine with leftover crap, win98 style, or worse yet, managing to break the whole system. - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually disregard that; someone said the bittorrent links work. Just for FTP I think.
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -2/+3You dont need to compile sabayon. And I found it perfectly responsive...not slow at all.
- lxnay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why don't you contact us and become one of the official mirror providers?
- Giga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@pixelat3d
From the link you provided:
"In some parts of Asia and Europe the term BBS may be used to refer to any online forum or message board."
The user you replied to is from France, thus making his usage of BBS valid. - lxnay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VI/VIM is there since 3.26
- jorgenmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also agree. Package selection is planned in the future, though:
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5042 - falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Anyone with an ATi card please check out the cheat codes, I ran into some easily remedied problems with 3.25 and 3.26. As part of the dev team please hit the forums and check out the cheat codes if you run into problems either with the live cd/install, otherwise this distro rocks some serious socks.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah... I feel the same way. :-. It's just a Gentoo thing. Use nano until you can emerge vim, I guess.
- petepete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thoughts entirely. I'd much rather start with the basics and install what I need. The mini edition is good (1 cd) but the full distro is overkill
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i think allot of hardcore ubuntu and gentoo users agree this distro has some great ideas, but needs ALLOT of work
- weirdlookinguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1site is down. Mirror anybody? or anywhere else I can get the .torrent file? I really want to try this out. I've completely screwed up my Ubuntu install 5 times trying to install beryl.
- bcmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You are still downloading the iso but you have already declared it ready for primetime?
That's odd...
I have used this before when it was RR4 and again as Sabayon and I think it's great for ppl like me who always wanted to try Gentoo but didn't want to spend so long compiling. I'll give it a try and then I'll say what I think of this release (crazy concept!)
The people who like this might also want to try the Ubuntu Ultimate DVD (I don't have the link) You get the same full featured setup as this one, it just depends if you want to use apt or portage as your package manager.
If you are just using is as a live DVD is doesn't matter either way. - yacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used Debian.. and Gentoo for a bit as my desktop.. and used Ubuntu as well.. right now I am using Sabayon which I like a lot.. it was easy to install and great to use.. though I have experienced that disappearing sabayon menu button problem before. but a kde button reappears... though I like the Sabayon button better.. All in all it is a great distro.. though I wish they would get that package selection tool up and running..

- nsuffys, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Bonjour,
Je vous présente mon site web sur Sabayon Linux entièrement en Francais :
Sabayon Linux France : http://sabayonlinux.fr.nf/ - 9a3eedi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0This distro is quite impressive. I installed it for a friend on his laptop, and he loves it. Doesn't want to go back to windows.
I'd install it on my powerful PC.. but not on my laptop. I get the impression that it's not laptop friendly (compiling time for emerging new packages or updating existing ones, bloatedness, beryl).
As for those who complain that Sabayon is too bloated.. one solution is to download a tool (which I forgot what name it was) that sorts out reverse dependencies, then allows you to unemerge the packages you don't want. May not be convenient as simply choosing what packages to install in the first place, but hey.. it's still sabayon :P - mydave, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0error N404 and what to do. were can I get information?

http://www.trgovinca.org - bcmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0because of the length of time it takes to install packages in portage Im happy that they include extra stuff in the DVD.
You can always uninstall or just hide the shortcut in the menus so you limit yourself to 1 application per function. - hansoffate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am installing this on my macbook as we speak. Awesome distro. Everything just works
- bcmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a bit of a bummer but not a huge deal since Sabayon and Gentoo releases are just snapshots anyway. You can update your version and have the same thing as everyone else does.
It might be quicker than redownloading the DVD but it depends on the number of changes. - daedius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Amazing distro! =) Though I heard they weren't able to get einit ( a big expected feature in 3.3) in because the developer was a slacker on something.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I liked having the live cd with all the different DE's on it. It may have taken a bit longer to download, but it would have taken longer to download multiple *Ubuntu live cd and even longer to install the DE's through the package manager.
- kozaki, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6And dev confirmed on Sabayon bbs that Beryl 2.0 is installable with emerge :)
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5101 - Chaswell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Looks pretty hot...Downloading for the first time, but looks like a solid distro ready for prime time.
- VIR3NT, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15Yay, first comment.
I think that this distro is one of the best out there for both n00bs and pros. I've been a user since 1997 of linux and this is definately the first that I can rely on to be able to install and relax without spending a day of tweaking to fix stuff. I'm happy its growing so well! I bet this release will pop it up another spot on Distrowatch :-) - Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Besides the fact its based on gentoo (no offense, but compiling is just too time consuming) and its slow as hell? Not exactly my definition of "mainstream ready"
- NX910a, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Sabayon is an excellent distribution. However, I must issue the following warning:
Just like Gentoo, it is most certainly /not/ a distribution for the impatient. Booting the LiveCD will take /years/. Installing the system will take /years/. emerge --sync (updating) will take /years/. Compiling all of your software after the installation takes /years/.
But if you already like Gentoo then go ahead and give it a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Also, you'll need 10.5 GB+ of hard disk space - Sauwan, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8Sabayon>Ubuntu (Ultimate)>Windows 3.1
This is the distro. Period.
