Linux and Windows in Russian schools

Russian Government Will Migrate to OpenSource
http://danays.blogspot.com/2006/12/russian-government-will-migrate-to.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29.... In Soviet Russia, Russians kill people who say "In Soviet Russia..."
- bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33....in soviet russia, windows pirates you!
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Well, they don't have to. But this is definitely BAD for Microsoft. A whole new generation of computer users in Russia will grow up knowing Linux instead of windows. This isn't as big a deal right now to Microsoft's bottom line as it would be if, say, a whole new generation of Americans were in the same boat. However, at least for me, its not good business to rule out a whole country like this just based on past economic issues.
Any software model centered company understands the tough center between attracting new users and making money. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -18/+32Russian schools using pirated versions of Windows decide to switch to Linux?
That's not really news. Everyone knows Russians never pay for anything. - J3Holaday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Nah, that happens everywhere.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12US piracy rate in 2004 is 21%
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12all kids know Linux. or is it Unix? thats what they said on that there Jurassic Park...
- PatoLucas, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I don't know why are you being buried, the links are ok and on topic.
- majorca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I am out out tinfoil. Can I borrow some?
- beartamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Actually, I can't find a single word about it in Russian press. My opinion - everything will stay as is, or worse - some goverment-level deal with Microsoft.
- andreyfedoseev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm one of those Linux enthusiasts who are ready to help schools in migration for free. Fortunately, I found a school which is ready to migrate and I hope we'll succeed.
PS. I'm really disappointed of you, diggers. These prejudices towards Russian people and dumb jokes make me sad. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9*GASP* You mean, companies like Novell and Redhat actually SELL linux!?!!! Say it ain't so!
*end sarcasm* - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@fatdog789:
I dugg you down, because being a Russian, I find your xenophobic statement suggesting that all Russians are thiefs to be rather offensive. - Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15This acticle is such crap!
The article title and description make it sound like kind of like Linux was chosen over Windows... that the majority rather be using Linux and not Windows. When in fact, the school teachers would actually prefer to use Windows (taken from the context of the article), but are being forced to use a free option by the government because they used pirated software.
And, why am I replying to this comment to state this?
"It's too bad Microsoft seems apathetic to this issue." - twertyto
The only mentioning of Microsoft is this single line: "Microsoft says that the incident has nothing to do with them". And from that, twertyto, you automatically assume that Microsoft has become apathetic about the issue? All I get from that is that Microsoft didn't aide of no about them buying pirated software. - Rooster99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I couldnt dig you down enough if I had an electrified-negative-digging-machine.
But on the other hand, props for 'blending' all of the most hated one liners on Digg.
Point of interest as well - Anyone else noticed that the integrated spell-checker on Digg, says that "Digg" is a spelling error. - HNIC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6beartamer, you're correct.
"Russian schools abandon Windows after piracy scare". Russian schools haven't abandoned jack *****. The article clearly states, "Schools in the Perm region will soon quit buying software from commercial companies." We won't know if this has an effect until the next school season. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10They don't have to buy software when the market has provided them perfectly acceptable software as it is.
- CurtHowland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ schestowitz,
There are pro-government people who go through all the free-market articles and comments and bury them too.
They also complain that the pro-free-market types systematically digg the same things up.
Welcome to the world of Identity-By-Ideology. - Pootle4rthur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if you read the article it becomes clear they have bought the software, just the people they bought the software from pirated it
Still, never let the facts get in the way of a pointless glib remark, eh? - HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think piracy is wrong, but these guys that command industry are completely clueless about their own business.
One example: in the past, one could bought their music in LP's and bring that LP's to other people's house, play them in parties, transfer to tape and send to other people, etc. That was the golden age. LP's sells were skyrocketing, everybody was happy. Then, came the greedy and all those schemes anti-piracy. Never, in the music industry, music was so much controlled as today. What we see today? CD sells are in the lowest point of all time. Music in general is selling too little compared to the seventies. Conclusion: people stop buying when pissed!
Another example: Microsoft became a giant, even claiming being target of massive piracy. Then came greedy... Now, what is hapenning with Vista? Vista is so controlled that the user has to ask for permission to poo. Are Vista sales skyrocketing? Nope. According to dealers, 99% of all customers have no interest in upgrading to Vista. Vista costs 400 bucks and represents no advance over XP. Just a few eyecandies in a sad try to copy MacOS X.
Greedy companies are pissing customers all over the world and we (customers) are just responding properly.
So, long life to Linux in Russia. - snek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I wish I learned Linux as a kid :'(
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know. Could it be because the Russian per capita GDP is still significantly lower than in most Western countries, preventing most people from being able to afford $200 OS'? Besides, the piracy rates are way worse in China.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9in soviet russia, windows abandons you!
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow!
http://digg.com/tech_news/Russian_Schools_Ditch_Windows_Embrace_Linux - aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11and Americans do? i bet if you could make a "genuine advantage" worm, that would travel through every windows machine in the good old US, you found find that they don't like paying much either
- bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Most schools that use Linux prefer to use distrobutions from Novell and Red Hat due to the available on demand support. Ubuntu and the free distrobutions have great support, but most schools want to be able to pick up the phone and say "WTFBBQ ONE OF OUR STUPID TEENZ HAXX0RZED THE LINUX!"
/end random - Werrismys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm really disappointed of you, majority of diggers.
Linux being better has not much to do with price, but everything with functionality and FREEDOM. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"This is a Unix system, I know this!"
*Scene of 3D file manager environment*
Cracks me up every time... - mogydy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We hear of more and more Linux Migrations lately, Until when can MS give licenses for free?
- andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@pcgeek101:
So each and every person who illegally obtains Windows would have bought it? I don't think so. - jerrycan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The greatest advocate linux can have is the fight against piracy by Microsoft. I suppose the order of usage for most would be:
1. free MS Windows
2. Linux
3. Paid MS Windows
(yes, I originally posted this in the wrong topic) - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would much prefer for MS to kill DX, and make the companies use OpenGL, it's already portable... Also I heard somewhere that DX10 will break compatibility, not sure how true that is.
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...if I had an electrified-negative-digging-machine"
Yes, yes, but does it blend?
;) - Antebios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In Japan... they choose Linux over Windows.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Support isn't always - RHEL / SLED
- CalipsoII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nedry wrote those 2 million lines by hand don'tcha know
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i doubt that Microsoft will still be dominant in 25 years. hell i'm using Linux right now is that not proof enough?
I know a lot of people that are going to be switching, I know a lot of people who aren't geeks, and don't really know how to even format a HDD that will be switching to Linux. - insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"buying Linux gear instead."
That doesn't really make sense. Linux is free, just like pirated copies of windows. - sebnukem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here comes the Gulagbuntu distro
- Werrismys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I won't take free M$ licenses.
They would have to release the source, license it in some sane way, change the user interface, provide proper tools and development tools, and so on.
It would be easier for them just to port DX10 to Linux and release that. - Misesean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But why would anyone /want/ Vista?
- rouslan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, another wrong move by the Russian authorities, Putin. They have recently instituted stupid laws that actually slow the economy down. Almost all people there buy pirated media; there is no other alternative due to low wages (average $200 per month, even with professions such as doctors, etc.). Perhaps this is to just show the US government that they are doing something in response to the denial of WTO? And they are doing this to schools. Bad move. Linux will solve the problem in this case, I'm hoping the same thing won't happen everywhere in the nation in general-for example, there are no "open-source DVD movies", etc.
- CurtHowland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, Soviet Russia pirated the IBM 360 mainframe.
- Gobgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I knew a friend of mine who lived in Russia when Windows XP first came out. He said that on the highway there were advertisements for Windows XP all over the place, and on each one people had posted lists and lists of valid CD keys. He pulled over, grabbed a few, and crossed them off the list =)
- underdog5004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, the whole Russian schools totally ditching windows for linux thing? That's probably _not_ what microsoft meant to happen.
- Misesean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14. Enlightenment
5. Linux - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ PatoLucas
There are anti-Linux diggers who systematically go through all my comments and mod them down. They don't even deny it. The same goes for UseNet (through Google Groups' rating system, which can easily be abused). - illicium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Xilon: that filemanager is real:
