- dinostabOMG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+53In Soviet Russia, apt-gets you!
- ScornForSega, on 10/21/2007, -12/+62Well, it looks like nobody else is going to do it, so here it goes:
"In Soviet Russia, linux installs you!"
.....digg me down please. - BZKyle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32Damn... why is this so backwards? My school board just completely disallowed the use of Linux on any computers within their schools.
- Sifl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26What's your school's (IP) address so I can send a ... letter.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Turns out it's just the Perm region. Still, it's huge. 2/3 the size of Britain, I'm told.

- dlsspy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13That's a good point. I'm glad we learned DOS and wordperfect when I was back in Vocational High.
- GrassrootsNinja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Dupe.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Russian_Linux_ALTLinux_ ... - DestroyFascism, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Give it ten years and Linux will be the norm. As more people adopt open software and steer away from Closed systems like Apple and Windows the advantages will be obvious. To not follow along would be foolish. When you think of India and the amount of code that will flow from that region alone on top of what money they will save, upwards of 30 Billion over 10 years, it makes Windows users look amateurish..
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yes! Teach them to press the button at the top right, don't teach general concepts that can help them when that button moves. Oh, and Red Hat does not exist.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7They're just sick of all the security holes in Windows and the rumored "back doors" that the Government of the United States has access to in Windows.
Hell, even the White House has long ago abandoned Windows computers in favor of a Unix based OS. Take a tour and all you will see are imacs, mac pros and macbooks/macbook pros in the White House.
It isn't a Berlin Wall, the Berlin Wall seperated families from each other and kept one side in poverty while the other flourished. To call it the Berlin Wall is to demean all those who suffered because of it. It's just a seperate network, which makes sense militarily and to retain state secrets. - Aleks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah... don't forget Poland!
- TheJokerV, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8in Russia windows is free too
- mathiaspastwa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Poland run 3years ago the first Linux machine for administrative purpose. Microsoft removed the NT4 service and now most states in Poland switched to Linux.
- Kugo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That is the biggest crock of ***** I have ever read. Are you related to Steve Ballmer?
- cynicist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6He could impose the same restrictions without needing to modify the OS at all. In fact, what you are saying doesn't make much sense. If this move is intended to separate Russian engineers, why is he only doing it in schools?... I mean bringing their own laptops or having a computer at home would make that effort meaningless.
If he was really doing what you are suggesting, it would make more sense to distribute the hardware and software in a mandatory way for the whole country, with custom tailored firmware to prevent tampering with the operating system installed. I agree this is more about spiting America than discovering the virtues of Linux, but being the pragmatic Linux users that we are, whats important is that we should see more Russian software made for Linux (even if these computers will be used to complete their secret sharks with lasers project) - Rosco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Follow the money trail. Any bets that school admins get perks from MS dealers? No perks if you use Linux.
- kingvik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Russia is so cheap but it does have a national balance in the top five while the U.S. is last.
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Using free software is stiffling innovation. It's just like free municipal wifi. It supports terrorism and kills puppies.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Many foreign countries pirate everything because it doesnt make sense for them to purchase the items at the retail price. If you make 40 dollars a month, and happen to own a dvd player, you aren't going to buy a movie for 20 dollars. You will copy it for 10 cents.
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4so you payed for a web cam that did not choice to release there specs so others could fix it on there computers to make it work for the individuals need... yes you get what you pay for... next time buy a webcam from a company that respects its users.... pay for what you want... pretty simple...
- markwilcox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Blatant blogspam
- GinaJuice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4In Soviet Russia....
Nah, why make fun of a good thing : ) - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33 days is old? Maybe we shouldnt discuss anything or post it on digg unless its happened in the last 10 minutes. We could call it www.diggexpress.com
- realstraw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Russian kids are lucky
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3For clarification, that's in terms of area, not population.
- Flamekebab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3disspy hit the nail on the head - what kids are learning now may well not be relevant for more than a few years after they leave school. If that.
Teaching kids by rote how to use systems is a ludicrously stupid idea. Concepts matter from a teaching perspective, not specifics, in this case.
What if their work place is an outfit that uses OSX? OH NOES! They'll not have a clue! They'll be on the floor in the company bathrooms in the fetal position! SAVE US, OH MIGHTY WINDOWS! - Kugo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You start by copying. That's how you learn. Then you get original. Then you look in the rear view mirror.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4please use the "Digg has found similar stories", there's no need it should get past that.
- paulisnotdead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In soviet Russia joke kills you!
- skyscape, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4That is because with Vista its kind of hard to remain legit, plus the updates are harder to pirate now, that is why Russia has no choice but to go with Linux. Sad but true. With XP they didnt have such issue, the whole Govt. in Russia ran pirated copy of XP and Office. Free is all russia can afford right now.
- bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Procedural learning. Nothing aggravates me more.
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Network Connections
....
Get a ***** brain, people. - srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, a lot of webcams are very well supported by Video4Linux
- Kugo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3India: there are some really ace programmers there. One of the first top security installations anywhere (Orange Book) was in India. 800 million in India, 400 million in Russia, over a billion in China where they're also making their own Linux OS, nearly 450 million in the EU where things are going increasingly Linux - who cares about the US?
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3windows never gives you freedom...Linux always does...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Russians are well known internet pirates. porn ripped dvd's hacking credit card fraud. But at least they have a legit operating system to use now without stealing from Bill Gates. good for them.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You know, a lot of spam is sent by botnets made up of infected Windows computers...
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And you see your ass?
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Old, 3 days old to be specific
- HonestAbe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I liked the mention of "Great Wall Linux" in Rainbows End.
http://www.webscriptions.net/chapters/0312856849/0 ...
Maybe the Russians will actually get off their asses and write some good software, instead of just doing whatever Apple does several years later. Then maybe Linux will take off. - omababy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2thankyou for the obligatory tard posting.
- KyleKruchok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Haven't we heard this like a couple times before? Merely a few days ago? Maybe a week?
- HalFTW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They can try all they want if you have setup the ssh daemon securely.
- TheJokerV, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why is he being dugg down. I know most of us would like to believe that linux is now going to take over and that linux is very user friendly but the simple fact of the matter is that it is not yet at a common-user friendly stage. Maybe once the GUI evolves it will beet M$ but as of right now, especially since windows is free and works easily with other pirated programs, windows will continue to reign king in countries that could get away with piracy.
- digsig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What, you mean, ASP Linux, as the distro by the guys who made the ASPseek search engine?
I haven't tried the distro, but used the search engine during my college years. Having read most of the code i can tell you these guys can program. Aspseek isn't easily understandable, but it's by far the best open source engine performance-wise, even 5 years after they stopped developing it. - Kugo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Once they start making the big rubles they won't care about spam anymore. They'll conquer the world.
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I, for one, will not welcome our *In Soviet Poland jokes" overlords.
- illinois68, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I sure had a lot of clicks from Russian addresses to read my article on Linux and open source software in an American public school recently... http://richardfcrawley.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/pu ...
- MattBD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I liked that too. I don't know if you've read Charles Stross's Accelerando (downloadable for free from http://www.accelerando.org/ if you haven't read it and it's a truly staggering read) but in that Russia was the only country where anyone actually paid for software in Chapter 1- I'm quite pleased to see that this part of the book hasn't come true.
