This is so sick and wrong. - ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Why bring it up? Cedega is a closed fork of Wine that can no longer get the benefits of community development like Wine can.
Because Cedega is from a company and they have to keep their subscribers happy, they focus more on patching what code they have to get the current crop of games working, while the Wine project has the broader goal of duplicating the Windows API. Because of this, Wine tends to support games slower than Cedega, but from my personal experience once Wine supports a game, it runs better than Cedega.
Wine's focus on implementing the API correctly, rather than just implementing it in such a way that *game X* works, and then having a different patch/implementation for *game Y* means that as Wine becomes more complete, games will come along that *just work.* for Wine and need more patching for Cedega.
Again, personal experience, but that's exactly what happened with Jedi Outcast was released. - mrzmyrmtthws, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Yup... :::spits in cup:::
Gays and them thar colored folk. That's all that dang linux is fer.
Real men use the winduhs to get on the internets.
/sarcasm - JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Yeah because we all know that Doom3 and Quake4 absolutely will not run.
. . oh wait - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Media Center?!? Pfft.
Upgrade: http://www.mythtv.org/ - B3Nji, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18All good. :D though i dont know why you would want to use windows programs on linux when if you look there are so many alternatives out there!
- kaervas59, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17What about the performance of Wine VS Cedega VS the performance under Windows for the same machine? (I just want some information, I don't want to taunt you)
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"The reasons to use Wine for iTunes is obvious, there is no Linux native implementation and (afaik) no alternative that lets you access iTunes store."
I don't think any Linux user would ever want to purchase songs off iTunes music store... - straxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Kevin, no one cares. In the same way that you don't care that I run Linux, I don't care that you run Windows. You don't care that I have a job that payed for my laptop and an XP license that I will never use, just like I don't care that your employer payed for your Windows license that you use everyday. It simply doesn't matter.
Tell me Kevin, what is it about seeing a group of people enjoying an OS that you don't use that irritates you to the point of trolling those people? Don't tell me it's because 'Linux users troll Windows threads', because those clowns have the same insecurities you do, and generally won't be found in an actual Linux thread, trying to discuss something with the community. If you really love Windows (and I have no reason to doubt you) then go do something positive in that community instead of being negative in this one. You're only adding to the sum total of asshatery in the world. - Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"The problem is, being proactive enough to bother looking."
1) Open browser
2) Type "linux " in your search bar (ie, "linux ftp client")
3) sudo apt-get install programThatSeemsNeat (or use the point and click interface to choose it from a list)
OR
On any Ubuntu system, just click on the "Add New Programs" menu item. Select the class of item you're looking for (ie, "Internet", "Media Players", etc etc...), and click on whatever one you want to download and install. This method takes a whole 30 seconds to get you up and running with your new app.
Really, this is not rocket science. - dblbender, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Wine has been around for some years, I wouldn't exactly call this news.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13windows media center. lol.
- drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I don't like Wine...I prefer Beer. It won't help you run Windows apps on Linux, but it will make you not care so much about your Windows issues ;-)
/ducks - JAVandiver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Kind of eliminates the purpose does it not?
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I was screaming on the inside when I saw that.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10125 other people would though.
- Fritzel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@kaervas59
It depends on the application, but not in the way you might expect, due to the way Wine / Cedega operate there is the potential for no application lag, since Wine / Cedega in Linux is not an additional step, the same steps are taken in windows to run the program. In fact, It is not only possible for an application to run as fast under Linux as in windows. It's technically possible for it to run faster in linux, if the application is well written. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ snoozer

dumbass. - straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Who's emulating? We are implementing a compatible API.
- poeppelmanjoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"I run such common Windows programs as Word XP, Internet Explorer 6, and iTunes 5 on my SUSE Linux system every day"
Why? - LowRentDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Personally I'm tied to Photoshop and Flash. Gimp wont' work because designers send me PSDs and Gimp screws them all up. I would be happy to never use Flash again but people keep paying me to make Flash sites...
I dual boot but I spend most of my time in Windows unfortunately. - Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@harbinger67
I think the "problem" is that it's running ie6 which is a craptacular mess(and pretty insecure), microsoft office (which i have no personal problem with but i think they're reacting to the fact that it's microsoft) and finally iTunes which i guess represents DRM, which so many linux users are against.
cheers
-Dan - BooDaddy69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You know for the longest, I thought that the colored people were the gay people...
Well, Exploding Pandas... I guess I was wrong.. - NX910a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is so BEAUTIFUL. This just inspired me to install Kubuntu on my machine.

....on my Gentoo box. That's all I have to do to "bother looking". - mikelcal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8As a noob to linux (Ubuntu 5.10, *I know, I am due for an upgrade*) I am all down for WINE.
Bury me or digg me down if you will, but I was deceived into believing that I would actually find out how to install and use wine... All I got was lame spam for buying CrossOver Linux.
BTW its great knowing that I can run all those apps, but HOW!?!
Moving on. - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@jsballardx
Only if you are a psychotic baby... - Harbinger67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5...What's wrong with it?
*isn't a linux user, please don't crucify me* - lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To run or install a windows program in linux using wine, type the following at a shell:
wine AnyWindowsProgram.exe
ie:
wine starcraft.exe
Will run Starcraft.
To configure wine, type the following at a shell:
winecfg
You're welcome! - ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Blender is a little slow to get into, but my god, it's much faster to mesh model in than 3DSMax. Well worth the work.
Here are some of the new features: http://www.blender.org/development/release-logs/blender-243/
Results look nice too: http://yafray.org/index.php?s=8&PHPSESSID=afd65868132e51ba51b47cff35add383
The only area - objectively speaking - in which Blender isn't up to speed with 3DSMax and Maya is character animation. - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Here's a perfect example. My four-year-old son loves to play certain web-based games, but a few of them simply will not work in linux. I've installed both IE and Firefox using Wine but the performance was horrible, so bad that the games were hardly playable. In a couple of instances, the games require a Windows-only plugin. it's annoying, but that's the way it is right now.
I'm going to try to get him some new games. :) - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm getting dugg down for demonstrating that macs cost more than PCs. Face it, you paid significantly more for your computer than I did. http://strabes.wordpress.com/2007/03/06/the-truth-about-the-costs-of-macs-vs-costs-of-pcs/
^^ I'm not advertising my blog. I don't really care how many people read it. I just wrote that as a more in-depth study and add-on to my previous comment.
@straxus: I constantly contribute to the linux community as you can see from my presence in linux irc channels and from my ubuntuforums profile. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=127592
I was just responding to this guy's trolling. - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it just feels wrong. ABIWord, KOffice, and OpenOffice.org are all native and run more reliably than word... and running IE just makes you feel dirty.
running iTunes is just... weird. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've heard the latest WINE will be installed as default in Feisty.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I got sick of Wine and the various issues that come with it. I just run a lite verson of Windows in a VM, so much easier.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Harbinger67
hahaha, sorry Harbinger.. i dont mean to laugh
I understand that you arent a Linux user.. but.. you are at least a digg user are you not? - SuperOmegaSlack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have tried to make the switch so many times, but I can't get 3ds Max, Photoshop CS2 and Flash 8 working with Wine, so I end up going back to Windows. Everything Linux or Unix has to offer is great for me except for the fact that I don't want to learn Blender nor do I like Gimp that enough to drop Photoshop. so I am just waiting for wine to reach 1.0 and hopefully will be able to run the only apps that tie me to Windows!
- kingmoffa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5wine is getting better.
I can run Football Manager 2007 on it! YAY!
As mentioned , there are many great apps written for linux so most of the time I tend not to bother.
Totally cross platform is the way forward or is it web 2.0? Either way things are good for linux. - demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I got sick of Wine and the various issues that come with it. I just run a lite verson of Windows in a VM, so much easier."
Funny, I got sick of Windows and various issues (not to mention the price of it and future incarnations), so I run Wine in Linux. - Brigadier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only problem with starting out on a live CD is that it gives the false impression that Linux is slow. In reality a live CD is a lot slower than an installed version of the OS. I love Knoppix but I'm hesitant about telling people to try it for an idea of what it's like to use Linux.
- arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gimp is a program with a lot of potential, but it's just not there. No way is it a viable alternative to Photoshop. Gimpshop is pretty neat, because the menus are laid out like they are in Photoshop, so it's slightly more comfortable, but until it can have a native CMYK working environment, it can never be a replacement for Photoshop.
- nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I just want to play games, games, games..... I dont care about Windows Applications that aren't games.
- ISVDamocles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@VinceNwhar: (sorry, couldn't help the misspelling)
Reverse-engineering the copy protection is *exactly* what TransGaming had to do in order to support copy-protected games, since the copy protection is supposed to make sure you're using Windows and the game CD is in your drive.
I'll check if Max Payne works in WINE on my system and make another post a bit later, but one element I noticed WINE improved on about 3-4 months ago is their drive mapping. You can use winecfg to configure drive letters and set your CD drive's directory to report back as a CD drive, and that tends to fool several of my games. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Please tell us how MythTV is a POS. I'm eager to hear your story and why you think WMC is better.
- sirhomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How to use Wine
Step 1) Select .exe file
Step 2) Double click .exe file
And before someone says... well that doesn't work with all programs, it works fine with IE6, Microsoft Office, WoW, Steam, and even Adobe Photoshop CS2. - VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ISVDamoclese
The main reason I used Cedega was copy protected games. None of them will run on Wine due to licensing issues and the illegalities of reverse engineering the copy protection. Back when I wanted to play Max Payne, the only option was to use Cedega. As far as I know, it's still the only option vs. Wine. - beerden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3100% free, OpenOffice, Firefox, Amarok on my Gentoo built system works well enough for me, but maybe not for others.
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, Kevin45, you aren't very bright are you? You should apply for a job at MS if you don't already work there. You are a natural FUD spitter.
- thetaco82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I don't think any Linux user would ever want to purchase songs off iTunes music store..."
I should hope not, but the ITMS is a great place to find new podcasts. - Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not Linux, it's GNU/Linux
