Running Asterisk on your router!?!
mobile.newsforge.com — No, really! You can do it. This story explains how to install (very easily) Asterisk on OpenWrt, and how to configure it to end up with your very own personal PBX. Includes a download of the infamous "has been carried away by monkeys" greeting.

Anyone have suggestions for a decent / cheap VoIP provider? Permissive would be nice as well. - hochmann, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Thanks for not telling us what the hell Asterisk is or why anyone cares... No digg.
- chemicalsno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you don't know what asterisk is?! have you been living under a rock?

- Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! THE FUD IS CRAZY ON DIGG!
No, Asterisk is NOT VOIP. Its kind of like saying your Palm Treo is your cell service.
Asterisk is a PBX, private branch exchange, read more about it here: http://www.asterisk.org/
Its a great OpenSource PBX and i have used it in small bussiness over very large networks and it works great.
Anyways, this is old news about hacking your linksys and getting it to run. I have tried it, but due to the limit memory on my version of linksys it did run so well so i just went and used an old Linux box i had. For people new to Asterisk, go to http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net/ its an Asterisk that is made to run out of the box for home and small business. But it can be used on larger networks. - Tandaemonium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I too had no idea what this was even after clicking the the article's link and asterisk's site...but AFTER i googled PBX and read about what that was...NOW I can see the value of this. "So that's what it is/how they do it...ohhh!" was the feeling I had once I had made sense of everything.
Most definitely useful and will try this out soon! - Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@piznut
Check out connect.voicepulse.com. They are really good with Asterisk, and they charge for only outgoing calls per min. Pretty cheap and i think a great place to start testing because you only pay for the calls you make, and the phone number. They are some cheaper ones, but i find voicepulse to be the best for a test setup, then you can move to any VOIP service that allows BYOD. Vonage is NOT one of them, and i would stay away from them like the plague if you want to do your PBX. There are people hacking it for Asterisk but last i heard it was clunky and most people ended up going to some other VOIP that has a MUCH better setup. - FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or...just watch SYSTM episode 5

>No, Asterisk is NOT VOIP
I'd say its not ONLY voip... because it is VOIP, a lot, SIP, IAX2, POTs - but it does do "voip" too :-) - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. Too bad alltel gave me a v5 WRT54G. (yeah... I know... weak.)
I just hope those 2nd-hand P2 Machines are coming my way... - miskaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool but its about the same thing that the Voip providers have been doing for a while now.
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everybody thinks it is new.
http://edge.i-hacked.com/category/hacking/ - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool, but zoinks Scoob, very hardcore work. If I had need for something like this (multiple phones, voice mail) maybe I would brave the headaches and do it.
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does he need Asterisk on OpenWrt on a Linksys anyway? It looks like the only advantage is the funny message. Why doesn't he just use the 101 phone by itself? And why doesn't he use a blog I can post a message to? That one just kicks me out each time, it sucks!

- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zuhaib, $24.99/mo for Voice Pulse! Forget it!
- Zuhaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@stevec5000
Not the normal voicepulse, i mena connect.voicepulse.com. There is $11 a month for a phone number, with unlimited recive calls and 2.4cent per min. Like i said, its good for testing vs paying $30 a month during testing. Once you want a full blow VOIP, there is a lot to pick from. - T8_um, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"or...just watch SYSTM episode 5

File could not be found - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I kept reading that as Asteroids.
That was disappointing. - dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg for the monkey away message
- halfbrainj, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0The best voip provider is Broadvoice. I am a user of their service and It rocks! Pick the in your state all you can call for 9.50 a month plus fees. You get unlimited incoming calls and unlimited outgoing in your state of your choice. And you also get 3way calling, call waiting, caller id, start 69, etc. for the same price. And another thing, their international rates are super low. Very reliable service! Check them out at broadvoice.com.
If you get their service, use my user id as referral: halfbrainj.
I hope it works out for you tooo!
