- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37Gimmie isn't new. It's been in the repos since 6.10.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Inaccurate. This software is not new (not even in the repos) and it's not included in the core/out of the box Ubuntu 7.10. It would be nice if it's integrated into the next version though.
EDIT: I see some comment beat me to it (Spr0k3t). - dharm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14its available for gnome... which is available for ubuntu and every other distro.
i guess ubuntu creates hits... - shibbay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11A quick video showing it in action...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xinGzOrnaA - DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10***** can't believe it's down with only a few hits. What's this server running on, AA batteries?
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Hmm, it's very strange to the eyes, but the idea of gimmie is very nice. I think it's just about time that finally we are starting to change the UI elements we have for more than ten years for something that resembles better with today technology.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7SHIFT IS SET SAIL FOR SUCCESS!
- tehkain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Gimmie has some big flaws to be honest. I am working on modifying the AWN-dock into a AWN-panel. I have already replaced many of the gnome-panel applets
- SpikeX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Down already? Who's got a mirror?
- jamesatdigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7here is nice article http://www.ubuntugeek.com/gimmie-a-new-panel-for-g ...
- 0xception, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5do you mean like the deskbar applet? might not be exactly the same but basically what you described...
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7The "idea" behind Gimmie is VERY differente from any panel today
maybe you are confunding yourself because of the "programs" tab, that really looks like another panels, but Gimmie is much more than that - tomj88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Gimmie is located here: http://beatniksoftware.com/gimmie/Main_Page
to install on ubuntu and possibly other Debian derived distros: sudo apt-get install gimmie - superbad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3apt-get install gimmie
- aerogant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't like vistas start menu for being able to click through and find programs, but I really like vistas way of quickly accessing things through search. I mean it is really fast just to hit the windows key and start typing and the closest and most recent things to what you are typing appear, programs, websites, files, directories, etc. The only time I click through is when I don't know the name of the program, which only occurs with some newly installed programs.
It would be great to have something similar in Ubuntu. - luet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4http://www.ubuntugeek.com/gimmie-a-new-panel-for-g ...
For anyone who's so lazy that they can't even google the effing thing. - euvirtual, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well, I changed to linux b/c I can have the "click here, everything has been organized for you." stuff, and leave the rest to you.
People shows more than IM contacts. It shows facebook users and signals changes made. It shows email contacts. It's a centralized place for contacts. You may not like it, or find it useful, but you don't need to use it either, do you? You can leave it to the people who want that, and that don't want to be forced to do the things your way. - 16777216, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Or perhaps the ubuntu system panel which has app search as well and is heavily customizable.
I just wish the devs had more time to work on it, they are both caught up in very stressful moving problems. - jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4While I didn't quite understand the panel myself, you're wrong. It doesn't look or behave like the start menu, that has already been imitated by many window managers/desktop managers/whatever for a long time, it wouldn't be labeled as 'revolutionary' if it was like that.
- jamezracer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5seems like a step backwards to me. I went to linux b/c I don't want this sort of "click here, everything has been organized for you." not sure what you gain too. if it's speed you are looking for, I have about 20 applications on my single panel in ubuntu. and the things I use frequently are programed as shortcuts. home folder anyone? "ctrl-alt-h" firefox? "ctrl-alt-f". anything else seems a step back. the people tab already exists, it's called pidgin. the applications bar already exists, it's called the application button. some may like it, but I don't think it will catch on.
- mikelieman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Fedora's got it.

Summary : Gnome panel revisited
Description :
Gimmie is an elegant way to think about how you use your desktop computer. - tcpip4lyfe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3ehh
- NJHewitt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Except for the neat little IM tab, this is very much like the Kickoff KDE menu.
- yummygrapes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It certainly looks useful but calling it "revolutionary" seems a bit much.
- jpinsonault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wow, that um... doesn't look amazing at all. And I watched a short youtube of it, so you know I'm an expert with valid opinions
- canuq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No mirror :(
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As a Leopard user, I must say that this looks very nice! At least there's VMWare...
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3why is so different from something like this: http://www.notmart.org/tastymenu/index.html
- MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm a huge Ubuntu fan, but still buried this for being inaccurate. Gimmie is old news. Literally years old.
- aerogant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUcn55tzKFM
It looks almost the same, but it is hard to tell. The vista one is designed that you can almost not look at the screen and open a program, especially if you open a program often enough, you can just hit the windows key type the first few letters and push the down array and enter, and the program starts. It's almost to the point where I don't even notice opening programs, it feels like I just think of a program and it opens. - TargetBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Even more so, forcing people to do things the hard way is what is keeping Linux from being more broadly adopted. Of course, by the tone of that post, I imagine that is just the way that jamezracer likes it.
One of the greatest challenges of Linux right now is to move beyond the elitist attitudes that originally helped spread the OS to making it more user friendly and easy to use. We already know it can be done: OSX, now it just needs to be done where you don't have to support herr Jobs to use it.
Also, gimmie looks very interesting. I'll definitely be installing it. - flazz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://www.beatniksoftware.com/gimmie
- mikelieman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sounds like the "ratpoison" window manager.
^t! then I type the first few letters of an application ( or otherwise navigate the list history... ) and hit enter.
BONUS: All applications run fullscreen without any distracting window manager bling. - yoda17, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is brilliant and looks a lot like my pda. Since 99.9997% of my time is spent in an application (not the GUI to kick off the application) and I only use 4 applications regularly, this is what I would like to see for simplicity.
Yes, I'm a total nerd and like to play around with tweaking the last bit of a color of a pixel of an icon, but sometimes I just like to do real work too. - libbydib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's me, the admin.
Yup, it's running Wordpress with WP-Cache, which isn't doing much good. The server is up, I think the problem is that there is just not enough bandwidth. Has anyone managed to get the page to load? - fleabag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its in fedora as well.. yum install gimmie
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...yawn...
- euvirtual, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Deskbar used to be useful, before the latest upgrade. It had a little arrow, where you could do the latest actions (open a program, search for a file). I usually like the changes made to programs (really. I like the changes made to pidgin for example, and I even like it better now), but the latest deskbar upgrade just changed it to something completely different, and in my opinion, less useful.
The video seems to show all the plugins, but if you open a program often enough it should show in the history when you start typing, and you can just press the down arrow and enter, and it will start the program like you described, since the history appears first. - fleabag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1your ***** looks like a mac, gg
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah the USP is pretty sweet.
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Screen shots:
http://beatniksoftware.com/gimmie/Screenshots - DrDabbles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2As opposed to Start | All Programs | Program Group | Program Icon, or Ubuntu | Program Group | Program Icon? I don't know. Most panels are pretty much Panel | Icon, gimmie even more so, because the panels are separate.
- kaph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nope not for me, 54 mins. from your comment time.
- plato747, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Another neat tool I have in Gutsy now: http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techblog/article/cha ...
- TehDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I dunno.... it seems like you have to click way too many times to get at what you want with gimmie.
- PoptartKing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Check out the non-applet program, it's pretty drastically different (in that it's a window list too).
- shanesemler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It may not be new but I've never heard of it so it's new to me!
- saudi86canada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1nope. with the search bar, every program u need can be launched in 3 clicks.
- banan666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This was great man. I added this to my Ubuntu 7.04 with no problems. And check the roadmap: http://www.beatniksoftware.com/gimmie/index.php?ti ... , they are going to add pidgin (gaim), gmail and facebook support (!) in version 0.3.0
- steffl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0As others said already it's not really a news. It was a news back then: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Gimmie_A_Revolutionary_ ...
I also think that the concept makes only sense at a standalone version. -
