- daveisfera, on 11/21/2008, -0/+29Most of those prices are close (if not identical) to the price that you can buy them for right now, so that doesn't really go along with the whole "Black Friday" thing.
- theseaman, on 11/22/2008, -1/+14I think I am going to get an eeepc for notetaking and light internet use. I might even try to install ubuntu. I am so excited!
- CoreyTamas, on 11/22/2008, -1/+13Thanks for your post, Mr. Ballmer.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+13If Vista is snappier than Ubuntu, you're seriously doing something wrong.
- Ellipsys, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9If you're looking for the "Top of the line" netbooks, I suggest the...
Samsung NC10 - This is well accepted to be the current top hard drive containing netbook.
Asus Eee 1002HA - A brand new Eee, that's more stylish, thinner, and better than the standard 1000 series. Just announced a few days ago.
Asus Eee S101 - Would you like a MacBook Air at $600? Buy an Asus Eee S101. It is thinner and lighter then other Eees, at a slightly increased price. US version has a 16gb SSD with XP SP3, but other countries get up to a 64gb SSD with Linux!
Asus N10j - This uses an Atom processor, but amazingly has a discrete GeForce 9300 graphics card! Its about the same price as the S101, not as thin, but more powerful.
Not sure which I'm going to choose yet, but those are the current contenders. - chaaalieboy, on 11/22/2008, -1/+9Who thought 15 year-olds could buy dildos?
- arkboysooner, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7People call it a "Hackintosh", but if you want to be a snob about it that's your prerogative.
- angryfirelord, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7You do realize that the .NET platform has command-line counterparts? The C# compiler is simply csc.exe, which will then generate the .exe file for you. I've installed .NET 3.0 on a PIII and that runs fine.
Besides, these are netbooks, not gaming machines. They're meant to be small and for simple internet tasks. That's why they have the word "net" in them. - CoreyTamas, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8There's one major problem in how people analyze the performance and features of netbooks: They're comparing them to desktops and top-end portables. Pokes and jabs at the netbook concept are usually based on less powerful processors, smaller screen real estate and lack of expandability are cited as reasons why netbooks aren't a good investment. Sometimes I'm even seeing netbooks get talked down for their game performance. Are you kidding me with this?
The point of netbooks is not to replace your hardcore desktop or notebook, but to give you an option which better suits travel and portability. It's meant to be an affordable solution to get you the connectivity and basic functionality you need without having to huck around an 8 pound, 17" monster* that takes 2 minutes to boot up. Netbooks cut the drag off to give you what you need without the bells and whistles that jack up the pricetag.
If you're trying to get every form of productivity software in the modern word on your machine, if you want to keep 10,000 MP3s and 50 GB of movies, have a budget of several thousand dollars or you're trying to run Crysis then you're not looking for a netbook. Sometimes, however, people find themselves in situations where none of that stuff is mission critical. In those situations they want to drop a few hundred dollars to get on the net and to create basic documents. There are a lot of people like that and, for them, netbooks are ideal.

- Barackalypse, on 11/22/2008, -3/+9I have no idea how people can even work with anything less than 1280x1024 these days and I find even that is cramped for space compared to 1920x1080 widescreen goodness.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Ubuntu isn't really my favorite distro, but I don't think it's any slower than Vista...
- iSkylla, on 11/22/2008, -4/+9He didn't "hack" *****, he used an OSX Distro.
- mynameistux, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5and people in australia will continue to pay over 600 for a basic nebook.
i am so ***** going on holiday to america to get cheap electronics (no really) - sendaletterbomb, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5I've been using the Asus Eee PC exclusively for more than two weeks now, and there is a definite advantage to such a small laptop. I'm comfortable with Linux to begin with, but the Xandros install in advanced mode is pretty intuitive - even for the average Windows user. I've been keeping a blog on my ups and downs with the machine - http://theeeepcexperiment.blogspot.com
- asskey, on 11/22/2008, -5/+9Per se, not per say. Also you have no idea what you are talking about.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Yeah, Reliable doesn't quite sum it up does it? Considering how much longer it will run than almost any other widely used OS.
- nero147, on 11/22/2008, -2/+5those kinds of pedantic comments are the reason that many people have such a poor view of the community in general, and he was just stating his opinion. Nothing wrong with that. I personally don't agree with him, but I fail to see how you could construe that they don't know what they're talking about when they're obviously talking from personal experience.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Dugg for truth.
- UnaClocker, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3I used this technique:
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/howto-install-os-x ...
It actually uses the retail DVD, and allows you to download updates straight from Apple like it's a real Mac. - UnaClocker, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Dell Mini9 Netbook OSX How-To: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/howto-install-os-x ...
- arkboysooner, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3I think he used UnaClocker's method.
- jlimon, on 11/22/2008, -3/+6Black Friday is all a stage show for the sheeple to think they're getting a great deal.
- int19h, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Archlinx works great on mine.
- Atomic1fire, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3@rabbit
you seriously expect them to make a net top a serious gaming machine?
Its an internet computer
Views webpages and checks emails, im not even sure these things can run flash, I seriously doubt that anyone would build a nettop, as a gaming computer replacement.
when the whole idea is a cheap on the go computer for using the internet, and maybe minor task like Instant messenger and office apps. - theblacknight, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2But how's the wireless reception? I hear there are some driver problems.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2You're looking in the wrong place. The Acer Aspire One (XP edition) can be found for as little as $397 after rebate. Compare that against the $340 USD price and you're saving hundreds. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/7815 is the dea I'm specifically talking about.
- jlimon, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Yes it does.
- tito13kfm, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4./configure

- Laughingman42, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4Buried through a monitor running at 1024x768.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2In the link yesterday to gamestop offers I didn't see any good deal on it. $200 Xbox360 without HDD, $300 with 60GB. Games at 60 bucks. A stage show indeed.
- bj1989, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2"if you like Linux on your netbook, you'd LOVE OS X on your Netbook"
Horribly wrong assumption. - tech42er, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Maybe he had to leave unexpectedly?
/But then he'd just leave, not write adieu
//Maybe he was dictating it - bytor4232, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I recently picked up an Eee for my daughter for christmas. Thats all she wants under the tree, she is my future hax0r. Built her Ubuntu box at age 5 from a bunch of spare parts we were throwing out at the data center. I can say, it would be a great device to take to the bathroom, or to go from here to there, but for work? Naaa. I'd have to haul around a usb keyboard or something.
Now, once they start shipping from cell providers with a 3g, then we would be talking. For now, I'll be hunting down deals on full size lappies. Typing this on an Acer Gemstone I got for $350 a year ago from walmart. - HonoredMule, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I wish the wireless on my Aspire One was reliable. Despite how well supported Atheros chipsets are on Linux, it was a huge bitch to get working, and after every few days or a suspend, it dies. After dying, it won't work again until the machine has been rebooted 3-4 times. Yes, I know that doesn't even make a lick of sense, but such is life.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Personally, I'm waiting for the Linux version of the HP mini, the MIE. It's a shame it won't be available for Christmas, I might just get a Dell mini instead.
- gameguy15, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Part of me wants a netbook now, while the other part wants to wait for a netbook with a ARM processor ,and Asus new Netbooks with standard 10 inch screens and a planned $200 price tag. ahh the PAIN
- harmlessdrudge, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Here's a post about Ubuntu on an Asus 1000
http://wombatdiet.net/2008/09/05/asus-eee-pc-1000- ... - TaintedWisdom, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the honest reply "daza".
I will stop by that site and post something.
Thanks.
@ShoeSh1ne
I really doubt I can get something like a Sony SR or Sony Z for $500, or even 1500 for that matter lol.
Thanks for the effort though.
-TW - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Although you asked nicely, you are asking the wrong crowd. You'll get fanbois for Linux and OS X trying to bring you to their camp. You have a rough idea on what you want so make a post on a decent notebook site, something like www.notebookreview.com . Sorry, but the digg crowd aren't your advisors, and you sure as hell don't want them to be.
"dont get vi$ta unless ur running 16Gb ram w/ 8GHz 8 core CPU"
"macs r for fags"
"FOSS FTW"
"sony = explodes (and no testicles)" - gameguy15, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1You should look into ubuntu eee. http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/
"Ubuntu Eee is not only Ubuntu optimized for the Asus Eee PC. It's an operating system, using the Netbook Remix interface, which favors the best software available instead of open source alternatives (ie. Skype instead of Ekiga)." - UnaClocker, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I don't think so. OS X is Unix based, so it's got the power of Linux, it's just not so ugly. You don't have to deal with a package manager to install applications. It actually works properly with iPods and iPhones. Yeah.. I think that if you've managed to survive on Linux, you'd be a helluvalot happier on OSX, you've already broken the Windoze addiction, it's time to stop being so hard on yourself. :)
- asskey, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I actually was just being an ass, it's rare that you see an opportunity to be a blatant ***** to someone grammar nazi style but funny enough at the same time to be dugg up. And you have to seize these opportunities.
Also really I've done you a favor, I doubt you'll ever forget the correct spelling of per se again per se ;) - theseaman, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1THANK YOU!!!
- tech42er, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1The issue with netbooks is their price. $299 is a magic price point and what I truly believe these devices are worth.
- tech42er, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1How did you do that? (I'm not a newb; I'm just wondering which guide you followed).
- tech42er, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1If you want to use it like a Linux box, use a full-featured distro, e.g. ubuntu. It's not like the eeePC runs on an ARM processor, you could use any desktop OS. And popular desktop OS's have packages for FF3 and Flash.
- UnaClocker, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1No driver problems at all, it uses a Broadcom wifi card from the factory, which means it's the same brand that Apple has been using for years now. Works with the original OSX drivers, no problem.
