- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Note to anyone wanting to use this firmware that you have to buy the WRT54GL now since the WRT54G's shipping from most places are the newer V5's. The V5's are based on different hardware (half the ram, half the flash), and use a proprietary firmware, DD-WRT will not work on the V5's and it likely never will. The WRT54GL is the same thing as the WRT54G V4.
- loginname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just to inform those who don't know...
This will not work on the version 5 of the WRT54G, but will work on the version 4.
The way to tell is to look at the box when buying it. A version 4's serial number on the box will start "CDFA", while a version 5's serial number will start with "CDFB".
I picked up a few at walmart a while back for $49 each and all I had to do was dig through the shelves and look for the "CDFA" serial numbers and I knew they would work just fine. - capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wish they had a firmware for WRT54GC (the compact one).
- commandar!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Doesn't seem to do anything we haven't seen before with stuff like Sveasoft's firmware, or other open source solutions."
I've found it to be more stable than Sveasoft and offers a few more features. I honestly gravitated toward it in the first place on the basis that is *wasn't* Sveasoft and therefore didn't carry the baggage of what I consider a morally questionable abuse of the GPL.
What I found was that the v23 betas were a better product anyway. I was more than a little pleasantly surprised. - aaronmarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This firmware is rock solid and does a unbelievable amount more than any of the other projects going on right now. Sebastian (BrainSlayer) puts an unblievable amount of hard work into this project and is always on the forums for support. The web interface is ridiculously easy to use and read with the themes that they have implemented. It contains features such as QoS, DHCPd, Wireless Radio Boost, etc.... and the list goes on and on. You really just have to use it for a while to realize how useful so many of these features are. I can't say much more about this firmware other than that it really is incredible!
- Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the VPN version of this firmware, you can turn the WRT54G into a VPN end-point router and save like 30 - 40 bucks ;)
- groupofone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using DD-WRT on a v2.x and v3.x WRT54G since the beginning of 2005. Prior to that, I used several of the other open WRT firmwares out there. Haven't used Linksys firmware since I owned these puppies.
Very reliable. 2.3 brings a much improved UI (mho). I used the BrainSlayer layout previously, which was the best. Now, I've switched to 'Blue'. - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jaggededge, I've got one too, but my firmware is up to 4.20. Can't find the files to downgrade so I can install this (even the mini fails). Meh.
Anyone have links? - fitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's called someone being a retard and screwing with the site.....
- beertinted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone had to ruin a good thing...

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=34 - commandar!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just wanted to add on that BrainSlayer has done some amazing work on this, and it's looking like v24 will manage to be even better. He's already got the beginnings of some virtual SSID code in the v24 pre-alphas, letting you create ~16 SSIDs all on their on VLANs on the same router. Very, very cool stuff.
Thanks BrainSlayer! - Bodhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Stuff, Thanks Brainslayer! (and phuck you sveasoft...)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For you Dallas diggers out there, Fry's is selling the wrt54g's CHEAP and the one I bought (randomly) is version 3. Upgraded to this firmware in a minute or so, it is very easy and has an awesome feature set. They're going for $45 each with a $15 mail-in rebate.
- ReBeLaCe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is a very nice firmware. I just upgraded my WRT45GS with it and its nice.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't the WRT54GS still use Linux? I think that's a better deal than the WRT54GL (just as cheap or cheaper and has more RAM). Correct me if I'm wrong though.
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0v2.2 linksys represent! haha i got lucky and bought a 2.2 which according to some crap i read...its like the holy grail WRT54G's for non-factory firmware. ^.^ hehe cant wait to upgrade.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good firmware, really adds to the the feature set of the router and has an Easy to use Web interface.
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Upgrade are failed"
Haha. - Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want one for my WRT54GP2
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ malakin
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS4729641740.html
I'm confused are you saying that even these "newer" ones that this site is reporting won't work with DD-WRT firmware? - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh sorry malakin I misread
"The WRT54GL is the same thing as the WRT54G V4." - addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought a WRT54GL and a WRT54G (hoping the G will be a v4 instead of then new v5). Just using the WRT54GL as a bridge/wireless extender, still cheaper than most AP/bridges
- xerox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love version 22 of dd-wrt on my wrt54gs, but v23 never seems to run right for me :(
- PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn , I've purchased a WRT54G, and guess which version is that? V5 .. but it was 21K HUF (98.8$) . robbery :C
- Chealion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0soccerob - It is the final version for the v23 trunk. All development from now on will be on v24. That said, I've been using and updating v23 the past month and have found it rock solid. I'd highly recommend it.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where is Freeman 1.1? Someone hack that soon please.
- masterdieff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been considering switching to a custom firmware for my WRT54GS for several weeks. Azureus always brings the entire network to its knees after a day or two, and I heard it's because of something in the linksys firmware. I'll try this out tonight, as it turns out I have a v1.0 that doesn't have many problems with updating the firmware.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who is "considering" moving from the stock firmware to a custom one, DO IT.
There is absolutley no reason why you shouldn't. I have never experienced any problems with flashing ever. Just make sure you are downloading and flashing with the right files and you will be fine. - ajz8182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg, dugg, digged and dugged. nice.
- opennet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use it and it def kicks ass...use your imagination. the cisco/linksys market ploy is kind of lame but whatever- you can get what you need if you do some research.
- wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using DD-WRT since the initial public release and I love it.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with previous posters - much, much better than sveasoft, and without any of the additional stupidity that the sveasoft guys promote (silly games with banning users, locking their firmware to your router's MAC address, etc).
- seph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, with Azureus my wrt54gv4 craps out every couple days on latest official firmware...i need to look into this or another similar unofficial firmware
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You Suck0r " What kind of article is that?
- Dwebtron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone said: "If it ain't broke don't fix it"
i think this applies here... (maybe it's just me, but theres nothing wrong with my two linksys 54g routers) - Eazy~e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0beertinted: Thanks for that link, I got the "upgrade are failed" over and over, I downloaded the files off that site and now it works, first try.
- willizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does any one know if this release has preconfigured support for bittorrent. If it doesn't, then can you point me in the right direction.
- Eazy~e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOTES: Here's stuff that doesn't get explained easy on the wiki page.....
1- WEP only, the other modes are available but I can't get them to work.
2- Use a static IP that is below 224. 224 is the broadcast address so the router needs to be below that to recieve vital broadcasts and function correctly.
3- Download it off of the www.dd-wrt.com site, the same file I downloaded from other places gave me a "upgrade are failed" screen. - pushpakde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi
I have just Got a linksys router WRT54G version7.
I am not able to access the setup pages for the router. Its giving me some javascript Errors.
Is there any way i can Fix this issue.
Thanks. - SyberMile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok wpa works fine the only thing that is tricky to get to work was the extender
- WiFiSPY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the problem is with the DD-WRT firmware you cant get over 6Mb/s download speed. this is because of how much other ***** is running. if you have higher than 6Mb/s try the HyperWRT FW.
I use both , Hyper for my router/netconnection and DD for my other 54g that is used as a traffic shaping/Vlan device. - nature, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Doesn't seem to do anything we haven't seen before with stuff like Sveasoft's firmware, or other open source solutions."
You certainly can't mean the code that Sveasoft rips off, and then hides the source from the world with their illegal circumvention of the GPL? - pushpakde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Can i install DD-WRT on my linksys router version7
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0just upgraded to this last night...very nice
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Doesn't seem to do anything we haven't seen before with stuff like Sveasoft's firmware, or other open source solutions.
- soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0so is this a beta version or the actual final version?
