- Linguo, on 10/23/2008, -1/+81I am definitely building my own computer and using Ubuntu for my next desktop.
- Aeuta, on 10/24/2008, -5/+65To those of you complaining about the theme.
Ubuntu isn't about giving everyone the most awesome looking desktop by default it is about giving us a great base so we can make our own custom looks in 5 minutes while still remaining usable on a wide range of hardware.
This is what I made in those five minutes (running on 8.04...waiting on final before upgrading):
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2488/screenshot ... - inactive, on 10/24/2008, -0/+34Interesting how 8.04 needed a minimun of 384Mb of RAM to install from the live CD, while 8.10 requires a minimum of 256
- mgelman08, on 10/24/2008, -0/+34Each release I get more impressed with Ubuntu. I suffered from some of the earlier versions since Edgy but I am really proud to see a strong Linux distribution competing with closed source OS's like Windows and OSX. The development community is really responsive and the overall community with the forums and brainstorm make it a project that people are supporting at the personal level. I think the net-book revolution is just at its infancy and Ubuntu and other distributions have a fighting chance to take market share from the traditional vendors of computers that offer customers often with excess hardware and "wonky" operating systems, namely Windows Vista. At least Apple doesn't prematurely release projects, but the responsiveness of the Linux development community is a big attraction for personal users.
- pHr34kY, on 10/24/2008, -0/+32Great! It's almost final. There's still known critical issues which they plan to fix by then, so the RC image is unlikely to be the final.
This would have been a better page to post, as it shows what's good about 8.10 instead of what's wrong with it:

I still love the release notes:
1. Does not work on older nVidia chips. nVidia are slack, so blame them!
Seriously, if they don't want to share the code with us, they should at least go to the effort of maintaining it! - mvent2, on 10/24/2008, -2/+33Thank nVidia, actually. Such is the nature of closed source.
- Artemis3, on 10/24/2008, -0/+31This is nvidia's fault, not Ubuntu's. I'm sure you will face the same problem with any distro if you use the exact same Xorg version used in Ubuntu 8.10. Nvidia must either fix their old drivers to make them compile against Xorg 7.4; add support to older hardware in their newer drivers; or release specs of the older hardware if they don't plan to support anymore.
- Aeuta, on 10/24/2008, -2/+30Just make sure you pick out compatible hardware. Newegg comments usually feature a Linux user or two so check those out. Or Google.

In the dialog box, type: update-manager -d
Continue - talkingwires, on 10/24/2008, -0/+25Take it up with Nvidia. They chose to drop support for older cards from their drivers, but won't release the code for Linux developers maintain the drivers these "obsolete" cards. X will continue to evolve, and as its architecture changes, it can't support every unmaintained binary blob.
If this is that much of a deal-breaker for you, well, that's one of the reasons for a LTS. Ubuntu, and the other distros, are not going to freeze X updates just to support 6+ year old video cards.
(My desktop has a GeForce 4600, so I do feel a bit of empathy for you.) - mrjit, on 10/24/2008, -1/+26It's far more rare to have unsupported hardware nowadays than having to look for supported.
- martinmonkey777, on 10/24/2008, -4/+27gahhh
i cant wait!
im using 8.04 right now - pHreaksYcle, on 10/24/2008, -0/+22Uh..dude. There's no upgrade from the latest version. The way you get from the "beta" to the release is your updates to system files, that's what makes it different.
- talkingwires, on 10/24/2008, -0/+21"Ubuntu isn't about giving everyone the most awesome looking desktop by default it is about giving us a great base."
No, giving a great foundation is Debian's job. Ubuntu's job ~is~ to make an awesome Linux desktop. - xaphoo, on 10/24/2008, -0/+19I've been running Ibex for a couple weeks now... it's faster than Hardy Heron, amazingly, and completly stable and solid.
- wastern, on 10/24/2008, -1/+19same thing with people thinking a Dock = OS X
- ArthurSucks, on 10/24/2008, -0/+17The torrent maxed out my internet connection. That's fantastic! I know at the actual launch I should have NO problem.
- motang, on 10/24/2008, -0/+14Sweet they included the USB images!
- oblique63, on 10/24/2008, -6/+20Ubuntu is easier than your mom
- bullox, on 10/24/2008, -2/+16Ubuntu is easier than making ramen noodles.
- santy, on 10/24/2008, -0/+12You know, I agree with you that Linux is all about choice, but with all that talk about overhauling the default Ubuntu theme for the past few months, even with Shuttleworth talking about it, they didn't really deliver. (Regardless, I love the additions with each new release.)
- 0tis, on 10/24/2008, -1/+12***** NVIDIA
- pHr34kY, on 10/24/2008, -0/+11Dude, it's 100% nVidia's fault.
- svensko, on 10/24/2008, -6/+17It's also sad how many people think that Gnome = Ubuntu.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/24/2008, -0/+11Exactly what I did. Good starter, great response.
- bobbknight, on 10/24/2008, -1/+11Good luck in the video card department.
- intrepidibex, on 10/24/2008, -0/+10This is a really polished release. It picked up all of the hardware in my newly built rig - including a new Nvidia card that other releases or distros weren't able to detect. It feels snappy to use, and the font rendering is much improved on previous versions. I've just done an install of Debian Lenny and the difference between the two is quite marked. The desktop is still brown, but that's something that's very easy to change, and the colour isn't offensive to my eyes. Looks like a nice step up from Hardy.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/24/2008, -0/+10Troll, actually you can enable a root account by why would you do that when you have sudo, gksu, kdesu?
- cheeseplease, on 10/24/2008, -0/+9Hardware support is increasing VERY fast nowadays.
- tutfire, on 10/24/2008, -1/+10default theme != distribution. That's what gnome-look.org is for.
- johndavidjack, on 10/24/2008, -2/+11I usually post negative comments in most of these Ubuntu threads because I tire of Ubuntu-only articles, but that is a SWEET desktop background anyway.
Only thing is, when I changed the theme to the dark version you are using on one of my test VMs, some of the action/context buttons looked awful crappy... - mohtasham, on 10/24/2008, -0/+9That's what I'm going to do, once I have money.
- bills534, on 10/24/2008, -0/+9Does windows come with an uninstaller?
- weizbox, on 10/24/2008, -3/+12'It is about giving us a great base so we can make our own custom looks in 5 minutes'
Ah.. so why do they hide all the compiz-fusion options by default? And by the way, the options you are referring to that Ubuntu 'gives' the users for the ability to customize their desktop... that's not Ubuntu, that's called Gnome. - waspbr, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8I got an HD 3850 AGP and it works fine, it has some hick ups in the early builds of the 2.6.27 kernel but that has been sorted out
- ahughes, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8dugg 695 times right now...looks like 695 people care.
- TheGreatBelow, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8Tick tock tick tock
- pHr34kY, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8Really? I'm glad it doesn't suck as much as Vista.
- dinkydarko, on 10/24/2008, -4/+12beware, this stop my install working correctly..
not saying it happens for everyone, i think i clicked yes a few too many times in my excitement and destroyed important config files. - cawpin, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8Are you going to use it on your PC computer too?
- srturner47, on 10/24/2008, -0/+8Sigh... Guess I shouldn't upgrade this time, as I'll lose 3D graphics if I do. This really sucks for owners of older nVidia cards. I need to be a little more careful and only choose hardware providers who release free, open source drivers in the future.
- Keithamus, on 10/24/2008, -0/+7There are times in a systems life when it has to migrate from legacy applications to give better support/features to users who's machines are from this decade. This one of the many reasons why ubuntu has an LTS release - so users can be sure there legacy hardware will continue to work.
Do you also want them to support ISA graphics cards and serial mice? - slugicide, on 10/24/2008, -5/+12You're Firefox icon is a little small, though.
- kviero, on 10/24/2008, -0/+7yes, its called Ubuntu!
- cheeseplease, on 10/24/2008, -0/+7This is my second ATI card I am using under linux and I've never had any trouble.
- bmdavll, on 10/24/2008, -1/+8No OpenOffice 3.0 =(
- Magnes, on 10/24/2008, -0/+7I don't know any piece of hardware that don't work right know. Even Xi-Fi works (I don't know if out-of-the-box). Maybe some printers or scanners?
- oobuntu, on 10/24/2008, -0/+6System lock-ups with Intel 4965 wireless
The version of the iwlagn wireless driver for Intel 4965 wireless chipsets included in Linux kernel version 2.6.27 causes kernel panics when used with 802.11n networks. Users affected by this issue can install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid package, to install a newer version of this driver that corrects the bug. (Because the known fix requires a new version of the driver, it is not expected to be possible to include this fix in the main kernel package.)
...that sucks. sort it out intel! - Aeuta, on 10/24/2008, -0/+6As you will notice there my desktop isn't using "much of compiz". I really don't use some of the fancier stuff (cube, wobbly windows) anymore...it is just too flashy. But Ubuntu hiding it and not including the advanced compiz menu by default is something that really has to change. Though again I can see that they might want to hide it because it could (underline) destabilize a system.
As for your comment about it being Gnome you are totally right I should give them my sincere thanks. Great work guys! - YodaJones, on 10/24/2008, -0/+6Yeah baby! Bring it on!
