- BuryHuffPost, on 09/15/2008, -5/+65This will work for most if not all linux live CDs. It's nothing new.
- neasteflorin, on 09/15/2008, -13/+44Ubuntu is the Swiss army knife of the operating systems.
- backslashdigg, on 09/15/2008, -0/+231. Burn Live CD
2. Boot Live CD
3. Copy and Paste files to External Media - BradOFarrell, on 09/15/2008, -1/+24"What you'll want to do is open a new Terminal from Applications Accessories Terminal on the top menu."
And that's where you'd lose 90% of the people this might be helpful to. - MattBD, on 09/15/2008, -0/+21To be honest, Knoppix is better suited to this (and I'm a keen Ubuntu user). It's the most fully featured and powerful Linux live CD.
- bigd063, on 09/15/2008, -13/+33How about using the Windows recovery console, which if used properly should fix 99% of errors.
- mdman, on 09/15/2008, -8/+26been doing it for years with Knoppix... is this really digg worthy??
- thecheat1, on 09/15/2008, -3/+19Good trick, it's saved me a couple of times.

- brickbat, on 09/15/2008, -2/+1387% of quoted statistics are *****.
- vlademonkey, on 09/15/2008, -0/+10Yep, I've been doing this for years with Knoppix
- scy1192, on 09/15/2008, -0/+10why isn't Force an option on the dialog? Usability, people...
- sexybobo, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10What hardware doesn't work on your system? The only thing i have ever heard people having trouble with is wireless cards. And don't bad mouth WINE which you have obviously never used.
- FieldAnonymouse, on 09/15/2008, -2/+11Knoppix does it easier. None of this terminal crap. It'll automatically try the force option if the volume wasn't dismounted properly last time.
- noPCtoday, on 09/15/2008, -6/+14crash
- StandardsDT, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7You can do this in Windows and you can do this in any OS.
I've recovered many files from a drive that wouldn't boot simply by connecting either an IDE or SATA Cable and then connected the USB end to my Windows based PC. A second later Windows detects the drive, and then asks how I would like to access the data. It's pretty much like plugging in a memory card to a memory card reader as Windows see's the drive as an external storage device. It's all very similar. - jimmiss, on 09/15/2008, -5/+11I thought everyone knew this. I remember when this site used to be a tech site.
- lapubell, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7why dig me down, and the knoppix guy up?
- beesaretasty, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7What is CAN NOT Ubunto do?
- mRIpX, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7Awspire, I see you trolling digg as usual.
- theaceoffire, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5Yep, so keep a live CD handy.
- lapubell, on 09/15/2008, -3/+8been doing this for years with kanotix.
- battmutler, on 09/15/2008, -0/+560% of the time it works every time
- xutopia, on 09/15/2008, -2/+7While there is some criticism that could apply your analogy fails to deliver. A good analogy makes itself apparent.
- Sherman901, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5i've always wanted to be popular.... :(
- themadhatter444, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6This is great! I Windows die on me last May and made the switch to Mac. I still have a non-booting Windows PC with 120GB of music on it that I have been meaning to somehow recover.
Rather than doing what's posted in the article, does anyone know of some sort of SATA to USB converter so I can just use my dead HD as a music storage device? I'd like to avoid ghosting it to an external drive.
Regardless, great article. Downloading and burning now. - xutopia, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4At least explain why.
- theaceoffire, on 09/15/2008, -1/+5Very true.
And when the day comes that Wine runs Window's games flawlessly, the great migration will be staggering... - pjvandehaar, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Looks great, but shouldn't everyone on digg already know this? I've always got one handy...
- picpak, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I had a Knoppix CD from 2004 that I used solely for this purpose (back when I had Windows). Still dugg, but it's nothing new.
- arjie, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6Well, to be fair, all this shows is that it will be the backup to MS. Sadly, most people know how to use only Windows software.
Also, because the people who would generally be adopting this operating system have all the software in the world at their disposal, they prefer Windows because it means that the game they downloaded today will work on their computer and the pirated copy of Photoshop CS3 they got for tutorials will work on Windows. I've noticed that people who say, "But all my software is for windows!" are using pirated software most of the time.
Windows' large library of 3rd party software makes it the winner. Sure you can get some equivalent software on a Linux distro (for free we all scream, not knowing that Windows software is also 'for free' courtesy The Pirate Bay) but there is some software that just isn't there.
Let's face it, Windows has reached a degree of stability that makes the difference between it and Linux distros not worth it for the average person. Me, I could tolerate a crash a week without a problem, and even that rarely happens (though Alt-Tab in and out of a game can sometimes do that, and once just opening a file downloaded in Chrome gave me a BSOD in Vista). At that level, is the increased stability and integration worth it? Not really, not if you have to give up all your 'free' software. - JasonCox, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6Holy crap, Digg has finally caught up to 2004. :-P
- neuralcooker, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Yup nothing new. But this article looks very well put together, especially for those new this trick and/or new to Linux.
- DteK, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I keeps a Knoppix CD in my toolbag. very handy
- raydeen, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Pretty much. I have one that has both ATA and SATA connectors. Just hook the drive up and then plug in the USB. I use this to disinfect drives, copy data off of crushed Windows installs, scan for problems, etc. $30 or so. Best money I ever spent.
- linuxpenguin, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3That depends on the errors. . .
- JessicaSarahS, on 09/15/2008, -1/+4Yup, I've been doing this for a while too. Nothing new to see here! Keep moving along.
- JakeK23, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3finally! someone who doesn't think Ubuntu is the only Linux alternative out there. I agree, Knoppix is good.
- stix213, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3It can't ask you for your serial number
- thecheat1, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Be realistic, certain situations require Windows, don't hate. Mostly it's saved me by helping me make a few bucks fixing other's computers ;)
- EllimistX, on 09/15/2008, -1/+4I just used Damn Small Linux (Knoppix) to recover files from my brother's dead Windows install yesterday...
- ersnyder, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3If your drive is dead, why would you want to use it as a storage device still...?
- CaptainShaun, on 09/15/2008, -1/+4I did this last year. It's when I firsted converted (partially) to Ubuntu.
My laptop runs Ubuntu and my desktop runs Vista, so it's a nice combination. - IHaveCrayons, on 09/15/2008, -3/+6Great post, I had to do this once and had no convenient guide like this. I got stuck at the mounting the drive part so props to this guy for explaining it clearly.
- TheAmigo42, on 09/15/2008, -1/+4Knoppix makes this far easier than Ubuntu... what as waste to write a whole article about how to do it the hard way.
- StandardsDT, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3@Mooninite:
Dell and HP still ship CD's. I ordered a computer last year and it came with one. Also the IT Department I work in we get CD's with new computers we order. A computer from an OEM should always come with a disk. If your computer didn't come with one you should call the manufacturer to get one sent out to you. - mooninite, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3I like your username OP. *thumbs up*
As for your comment, yes this is nothing new. Somehow it got dugg to the front page. - SPLASTiK, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Sub ...
- cluckinchicken, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Just because you've seen it or done it, does that make you king *****? Why even read it and post, if you're going to be a negative prick? Just move on to your next article. They're not saying this is the ONLY way to recover your files. It's just one way. An alternative. Good grief people...
