demo: http://home.kde.org/~binner/kickoff/sneak_preview.html - wzzrd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Too bad there aren't any mock-ups or screenshots in the article...
- chibimmy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Finally a start manu we can all be proud of.
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@ znachtman
You obviously havent seen linux in a while. XGL owns anything apple or micrsoft have done. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14But what about start manus?
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The article is not loading. Is this it?

- bysin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10There is a solitaire game that comes with KDE, its called "Patience". And its a lot better then microsoft's solitaire.exe
- jrepin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah too bad. It looks like they are still working on the basics and backend to make it as best as possible. When they make that right it will be quite easy to make some very nice representation plugins.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I hate start menus.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Not even any concept diagrams?
-___- - Battousai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@matija-
That's a prototype for a replacement KMenu (or perhaps a Kicker applet) in KDE3.
It's unrelated and probably won't be anything like the KDE4 plasmoid mentioned here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Manu...script?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well then you probably also realize that wobbly windows in Windows is a 3rd party add-on and it's not GPU based. They are just smoke and mirrors. The new stuff, like XGL and Vista's Aero are GPU based and turn your desktop into an entirely 3D system.
So yea, I think it's more then what you're referring to. - metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7KDE has never crashed once on me.
The people who say "Who cares about look and feel" stick with gnome. Heres the proof.^^^ - XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, that's a different Menu for suse (kde), it will appear in suse 10.2.
- XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you people blind or something? That's the god damn SuSE menu, not Raptor Menu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what about utahraptor menu?
- leohart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When my Mac friend asks me what Kubuntu is I say: the i-Kandy version of Ubuntu. Go Linux. I want more eye-candy.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@damentz
I think you're right...a rundown of the stats by a KDE developer ran along those lines, although gnome and KDE were awfully close. XFCE had some pretty significant speed improvements on kde and gnome.
The other competitors, like fvvm, windowmaker, fluxblox, and so on are really much less of an environment than kde and gnome. At least in Mandriva, my box would not automagically add usb sticks unless I was running gnome or kde. I think if you are using fluxbox for your everyday activities, you should also be able to figure mounting a usb stick =) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That looks like the Vista start menu done right. IMHO, The Apple menu in OS X is a wimp, but I only use it for recent items and power options.
- matija, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's a little bit unpolished looking, but im sure its pretty functional
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Every morning i get up early and go buy some start manus... hot off the frying pan. Delicious with jam!
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KDE has never been slow for me. Then again, I'm not trying to run a modern desktop UI on a 386, which you must have been if you insinuate that KDE isn't snappy.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I believe the "jumpiness" of the demo is caused by the framerate of the flash file.
- tannoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm always amazed by how easily some digg readers jump to conclusions after reading misinformed posts, even when the following posts debunk the misinformation. They're usually the same ones who post 'this sucks... I'm better because I self-identify with this other idea'.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mmm looks like Duggmirror didn't catch it up before the Digg effect.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahh man, those start manus are hot!
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, I thought kubuntu was more of a vanilla-KDE than many other KDE centric distro's, like the old Mandrake, or Suse. Still, it works great and is quite up to date.
- datcracka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So you only have destructive partitions on your family's computer?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Do they make "manus" for XP or OS X? wait... wtf is a manu? isn't that what killed the crocodile hunter?
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thanks for sharing. We really wanted to know.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"A lot of the features used by XGL/Compiz have been available in small 3rd party applications on Windows years ago, like wobbly window frames and stuff like that. As for the rest of it, there's nothing it can do (that's useful in any way) that isn't already available on OSX or Vista."
Here's a demo of useless compiz type effects running in Vista about three years ago.
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1154262,00.asp - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@matija: that is insanely sweet! looks awesome! i still prefer gnome, but that new menu is a great example of what Free Software can do.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I do love fluxbox. It takes 2 seconds to load my desktop from the login manager.
Then again, as you pointed out, it doesn't do much automagically, you have to know your way around a little better than a KDE user. - dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not bad.. i like the launchy(colibri)-like files(programs) search..
- JustinKoehn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isnt that like the menu in SLED 10?
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2awesome :)
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if you even care, but I know Gnome's last release ended up creating a significant drop in memory usage. Also, the login time was about cut in half for me.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2From the statistics ive seen, gnome is the heaviest window manager, followed by kde, then xfce, then theres a huge drop.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kubuntu is the worst representation of kde, seriously. Theres no font antialiasing on by default and they turn all the gui effects off.
- czedlitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@znachtman
I use Linux only at home, i have 3 machine and a laptop all running linux and i am able to do anything i could on windows when i had that installed a few years ago, i can even play all the games i once did on them in linux. and if you want most of the visuals Mac provides, test out XGL, it's nice and on Linux. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, the small lightweight window managers are good and all but I want a more robust system, and KDE or Gnome are really the only two that give that to me at this point.
They require a little more resources, that's not in dispute. But, they both do a lot, too. I don't find either to be slow.
We could all go back to using emacs in xterms but in 2006 I demand a little bit more, and am willing to sacrifice some of the ridiculous amount of CPU power any crappy desktop PC has these days for it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5It looks pretty good, but I don't think it's a usability improvement over the current KDE menu (or the Windows Start menu, on which it is based). It looks different and prettier, but not generally "better" in any way I can think of.
- LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2PCLinuxOS is a way better kde distro than KDE. Better than SuSE or Mandrake too.

,----[ Quote ]
| OpenSUSE 10.2 will have a redesigned KDE start menu created by the KDE
| and usability team at SUSE, after doing usability testing with other
| start menus. We now have a working prototype, code-named 'Kickoff'
| (started during world soccer championship, obviously), which is
| currently being tested with real users in the SUSE usability lab.

http://home.kde.org/~binner/kickoff/sneak_preview.html - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wouldn't watch that demo. It never gets to the end.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Me too. Keyboard shortcuts FTW.
- TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like this. Little things like this keep convincing me to switch to Linux more and more. Whenever I get a new computer I plan on dual booting. I don't have the time right now to worry about a non-destructive partition on my family's computer. Don't want to take any chances screwing up any documents or pictures; and can't afford external hard drive right now to back it all up to. I guess I'll wait until its time to re-invest in a new computer.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah honestly, keep us posted on your decisions.
