QGtkStyle makes KDE apps fit in with GNOME
arstechnica.com — A Trolltech developer has implemented a new Qt style that uses the GTK+ theming API. It will enable Qt and KDE applications to share the GNOME look and feel when used in the GNOME desktop environment.

- rockus, on 05/23/2008, -3/+47I am really used to the GNOME look and feel. Hope this makes Amarok feel much more at home in GNOME.
- patpi, on 05/23/2008, -0/+13It will.
On Trolltech tech blog there are more screenshots -> http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2008/05/13/introdu ...
really cool! - rpgmaker, on 05/23/2008, -0/+8This app was a must, there was already a GTK-Qt one but we lack of the GTK counterpart.
- solarwind24, on 05/23/2008, -2/+2Exaile.
- rockus, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2I personally found Exaile to be lacking. May be in the future, it could become a fine replacement for Amarok in GNOME.
- PhailQuail, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3I gave Exaile a try after accidentally forgetting to backup my Amarok database, didn't like it, it feels alot like Rhythmbox with Amaroks method of displaying albums/artists.
Amarok is so much more than that.
- ninja0, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Thats exactly what I want, though I never found amarok THAT bad in gnome compared to some apps..
- patpi, on 05/23/2008, -0/+13It will.
- ArthurSucks, on 05/23/2008, -1/+12I hate how KdenLive stands out on Ubuntu. This will help.
- rpgmaker, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Kdenlive crashes on me in Hardy :(
- jay019, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah, me too. Bit of a pity, decent non-linear video editing is seriously lacking in Linux
(And yeah I've tried a few, yet to try Cinelara tho)- rpgmaker, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Cinelerra is old, really old, you can tell just by looking the UI. And it doesn't work really well in ubuntu either.
- curupira, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I hope Lumiera will finally fix this problem.
http://lumiera.org/
- sloppychris, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Kdenlive, Kino, and PiTiVi crash fairly often :(. I finally broke down and installed Cinelerra, which hasn't crashed, but I have a long road ahead in learning the program.
- jay019, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah, me too. Bit of a pity, decent non-linear video editing is seriously lacking in Linux

KDE n' Live
- rpgmaker, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Kdenlive crashes on me in Hardy :(
- nightman, on 05/23/2008, -2/+12Great news!
- jakethecake, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4"Good news everyone! Those asinine morons who canceled us were themselves fired for incompotence!" :D
- fatas, on 05/23/2008, -1/+25hopefully a package will be released for Ubuntu
- Roger, on 05/23/2008, -9/+4Another thing I hate about Linux: having to wait for precompiled packages.
(Of course you can always try compiling the package yourself, but then you have no uninstaller or integration into the system, if the compilation even succeeds)- Haxxormaster, on 05/23/2008, -0/+10having to wait for an app to be released?
...because only its _source code_ is available while in its development stages? - muep, on 05/23/2008, -0/+7Instead of just compiling, why not also make a package? Then it can be easily installed and removed.
- Megatog615, on 05/23/2008, -1/+4Oh please, it compiles two libraries(that's all). If you don't want it you can just delete them.
- mossblaser, on 05/23/2008, -1/+4Seriously - what platform do you use where this isn't the case?
Also, you can do sudo make remove to uninstall compiled things. If you want the true source-based package-management experience use Gentoo or some BSD.- Roger, on 05/23/2008, -4/+1"Seriously - what platform do you use where this isn't the case?"
In Windows everything is released as a binary (beta or not).
"Also, you can do sudo make remove to uninstall compiled things."
Meaning you have to keep the source forever. - PatrickBrown, on 05/23/2008, -4/+1WHAT are you talking about?
You have no idea what you are talking about and looking like a fool. You should shut up now before what is left of your geek credentials is revoked. - Giga, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1"In Windows everything is released as a binary (beta or not)."
Not everything, but the vast majority is.
What I don't get is that the thing you hate about Linux is that you have to wait for binary releases. I wasn't aware that Windows had this mystical property that makes binary releases come quicker. It's a case of release source now and binary in a few days, or release binary only in a few days. Windows generally only gives you the second option.
- Roger, on 05/23/2008, -4/+1"Seriously - what platform do you use where this isn't the case?"
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Oh wow, Look, If you can build software, you can rm it also. If you don't know where it installs, you can read the output of the *make software, or the accompanying documentation text files.
- armo, on 05/23/2008, -2/+3Also, on the majority of programs there's "make uninstall" which gets rid of most of it.
- jay019, on 05/23/2008, -1/+1True, but until all programs include "make uninstall" I can understand people being unwilling to compile. Although you could always use "checkinstall"
- stargatesteve, on 05/23/2008, -2/+2looks like somebody's never actually compiled anything.
- Haxxormaster, on 05/23/2008, -0/+10having to wait for an app to be released?
- Roger, on 05/23/2008, -9/+4Another thing I hate about Linux: having to wait for precompiled packages.
- Vinvin, on 05/23/2008, -1/+7Note that Qt applications won't just "share the GNOME look and feel when used in the GNOME desktop environment", but also use your preferred GTK theme when e.g. used in the Xfce desktop environment.
At least I hope so. - n0odles, on 05/23/2008, -4/+20What about the reverse?
- rockus, on 05/23/2008, -7/+3Yeah...something on the reverse would also be cool. Don't know if any exists though.
- shanesemler, on 05/23/2008, -2/+28Yes, and it's existed for about 5 years now: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=9 ...
- n0odles, on 05/23/2008, -0/+9I should be more clear, it was pretty horrible when I used it in KDE 4.0 release. KDE 3.5 had better support for GTK apps like Firefox.
- mossblaser, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4KDE4 is fairly experimental at the moment so don't worry too much about regressions in things like that.

- Peterix, on 05/23/2008, -4/+8Hmm ... I'm thinking about reimplementing the Gnome menu panel applet in plasma and using a GTK theme in KDE4. That and Emerald would make it look a bit better :)
- Kingoftherings, on 05/23/2008, -4/+4Awesome, looking forward to it.
- Vadi0, on 05/23/2008, -7/+2The reverse is already available, search in synaptic... and amazing, I was so looking forward to this. Love certain kde apps, but hate the different look.
- ileftfark, on 05/23/2008, -2/+3...but isn't the article the reverse... of your "reverse"?
*head asplodes*
- ileftfark, on 05/23/2008, -2/+3...but isn't the article the reverse... of your "reverse"?
- amrhassan, on 05/23/2008, -2/+2i was just thinking of this possibility yesterday and wondered if someone would do it!
AWESOME - UrbenLegend, on 05/23/2008, -2/+6Great! Now we just need the equivalent for GNOME apps running in KDE. Currently, the widgets in KDE that mimic GNOME look like crap.
- Morghin, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4Personally I think there's just far too much confusion about the different packages and what they bring to the table. Anything that bridges the gap for people and choices is welcomed with open arms from me.
- Megatog615, on 05/23/2008, -0/+16Too bad it's only for QT4. Looks like we'll have to wait until Amarok2 to get it to work with our GTK themes.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Win! Always wanted this. Now if only they could develop a better GTK theme for Qt4 themes.
- Ademan, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3I'm gonna use this and gtk2-engines-gtk-qt...
really though, awesome, i've been wanting something like this for a long time. - Jarulf, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4A giant leap in the right direction for Linux on the desktop! It really shouldn't matter which desktop environment the user runs, apps should be seamless.
- urbanight23, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1excellent. Im a kde user, gonna have to check out the reverse (whats it called? I'll search in synaptic). Anything that allows the great programs to reach a wider audience is a win. Now instead of remaking kde apps for gnome, developers can focus on improving the kde apps so everyone wins (and vice versa).
- hackmeister, on 05/23/2008, -5/+5My favorite Qt based apps:

Ktorrent
Kdenlive
Opera

Amarok - MrViklund, on 05/23/2008, -6/+1Well that's not very good.
KDE > Gnome - JonForTheWin, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1So we got an API using another API . . hey I'm not gonna complain. Just using the same themes with both seemed to always work for me.
- neko, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3Honestly? Qt looks pretty damn fine when you ditch the default KDE icons and go with Tango icons. GTK style widgets sounds nice enough, but Plastique looks great too.
- kwilliam, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2You're not dissing the beautiful Oxygen icon set are you? Well, I suppose everybody has a different idea of "damn fine". I'm pretty so-so on Tango, so I guess it's good that we have both!
