- lickmyback, on 12/15/2007, -1/+30Hot on the heels of "Linux Mint", another self-aggrandizing, differently configured, re-branded version of Ubuntu. It's great that open source allows such variety but I'm getting sick of seeing copycat distros that brand themselves the next big thing. "One of the hottest Linux distributions out there" - says who? It hasn't even been released yet. Give it a bone.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -0/+27It's.... well, it's.... um.... it's a.... well, another Linux distro. You're supposed to get all excited about it though.
- Remmy, on 12/15/2007, -0/+27Yeah. PyroLinux. Named for the massive flaming it's going to receive for touting itself as the greatest thing since sliced bread when they haven't so much as shown what makes it great.
- sexisn1p3rjb, on 12/15/2007, -2/+21I dont comepletely understand what this product is.Somebody explain it to me please, and thankyou
- martalli, on 12/15/2007, -0/+14This project isn't even listed on distrowatch. That indicates a relatively newness of theproject and a lack on regular press releases an such on email. Netcraft hasn't heard of the site and whois states the site was domain was created 2007-12-07. I think this is the main feature of pyrolinux:
"Ads by Google" - Remmy, on 12/15/2007, -0/+14Microsoft fonts? Have you licensed them for inclusion? Because they aren't free you know. As a matter of fact, downloading them without a license isn't permitted which is why Ubuntu doesn't install them by default.
- thespudmall, on 12/15/2007, -0/+11If it's so hot, why have I not heard of it?
- estvir, on 12/15/2007, -1/+11Amusingly enough, I buried it for that same reason, oh, and the ones harlowsmonkeys and others stated.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 12/15/2007, -1/+11How can you tell? About the only details they have is that they will have more Microsoft-like fonts than default Ubuntu, and a window manager that has a knock-off of the OS X dock. That sure doesn't sound like it is more than just another Ubunutu derivative.
- Spaceomega, on 12/15/2007, -2/+11Digg me down, wrong Linux distro.
- bluedemon31, on 12/15/2007, -2/+11i like how they used a ubuntu screenshot instead of showing off their own product
- kris33, on 12/15/2007, -1/+10How the hell did this get to the frontpage?
- rmd34, on 12/15/2007, -0/+9You added this to digg way too soon with unsubstantiated claims, no info whatsoever and a request for payment. You shouldn't be surprised by the response. The devil's in the details. In any case... best of luck with this!
- baalzebub, on 12/15/2007, -0/+8pyro? like a "flash in the pan"?
Main Entry: flash in the pan
Etymology:
from the firing of the priming in the pan of a flintlock musket without discharging the piece
Date: 1706
1 : a sudden spasmodic effort that accomplishes nothing
2 : one that appears promising but turns out to be disappointing or worthless - mikewhite314, on 12/15/2007, -0/+8what a sham. They're just doing this so they can make money from selling cds. "Part of the money of the sales will be going towards PyroLinux’s development and other things." What other things?
- sethkinast, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7This post is a joke... how did it get to the front page?
- Remmy, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7Just some advice:
1. Go hire some lawyers who are familiar with the GPL. Make sure that you are abiding by it, to the letter. People will call you out on it.
2. Shut the hell up. The more you say, the more people are going to flame your ass. You jumped the gun posting this.
3. The old saying, "Pics or it didn't happen" applies here. Never claim if you can't substantiate said claim.
4. There are too many derivatives already. Start from scratch. If you can't do that, you really don't need to be in the distro business anyways. - rmd34, on 12/15/2007, -0/+7When I said too soon, I meant this:
http://www.pyrolinux.com/download/
"The Download for PyroLinux will be available soon!" (as of 12/15/07)
So the only way to evaluate it is by paying for it. Since it's not available, it isn't free. I'm sure many users will appreciate the effort you (and your team) have taken in putting this distro together. I certainly do. Please repost to digg when it's ready:-) Also, having additional details and screenshots on the site will only help. Peace! - Erowid, on 12/15/2007, -0/+7.... That web site had almost no info about what will be different about PyroLinux... It has AWN installed out of the box, and has different default fonts? Is that it? :/ :/ :/ Buried for not having any changes that are worth anything.
- nicktx, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5I'll help you out. Unless it comes on a microwaveable media in a vapor-resistant package, there's a good chance this stupidly but pretentiously named distribution, if it ever sees the light of day, is going to generate any measurable amount of heat. Apparently unaware that tinkering with the default fonts and adding a random program to another distro makes you neither "cool" nor "hot", the person or people behind this are just full of hot air. The chilly reception of the announcement could probably be explained by the fact that there are several excellent distributions that are available for download, you know, right now and for free.
- bejayel, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6Nice another ubuntu derivative! Sorry guys, but this is pretty terrible. Poorly designed and implemented website. Calling it the best linux out there when nobody has even heard of it, and making an ubuntu based distrobution with a new interface and a few extra things pre installed does nothing but make this distrobution fail.
- dasunst3r, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6Try telling that to the folks at NYSE.
- MadEnvoy, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6And possibly gazm a bit on your screen while shouting some archaic magical Linux command. "apt-get install fanboy! gaaaaaahaaaga!"
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5He's hardly flaming - but I guess the question should be 'why don't you have any screenshots'? YOU were the one who posted the link to digg, you refer to yourself as a member of the group thats releasing this, so why no pictures?
Don't you think that people are going to actually want to *see* the product before they 'pre-order' it? What makes it great? So far all your website says is that you have AWN and un-smoothed fonts. The About section says "PyroLinux has a more “User Friendly” interface than most distributions out there." What does that mean? It's better than most; is it better than, say, Ubuntu? Personally, I'm not feeling too inspired from that. Maybe something a little more convincing is in order if you're going to claim that it is 'The next hottest linux distribution to hit the linux market and community' - even if it *is* a pun.
Now maybe the work you've done is very nice; maybe this truly is the best thing since sliced bread. However, there is no way for any of *us* to *tell*, and there's no way I'm plunking down money to pre-order it without some idea of what I'm getting. - mazza558, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5Avant Window... uh... Mavigator?
- superyounan1, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5someone thinks its funny to get dugg down to -50, well I won't give you the pleasure!
- nanostream, on 12/15/2007, -5/+9"Pyrolinux... The next hottest linux distribution to hit the linux market and community."
I was so going to attack that claim, but then I realized I technically couldn't. - martalli, on 12/15/2007, -0/+4not flaming. Many projects are on dw pending for months or years
- dasunst3r, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4I don't see any specific contribution that this distribution has to make; and frankly, we need a little bit more solidarity in the Linux community.
- Remmy, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4PyroLinux: Our chances of getting people to use it just went up in smoke!
- suitengusaiga, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4So, in summary, "carsenk" Dugg his own project and has then proceeded to defend his "distribution" from all negative comments. It really could be a good product, but it just seems like a hasty decision, in both idea and practice. Without even the IRC up, who am I to contact about Pyro at all? Who even developed it?
As a word of criticism, don't say "it's just our slogan right now, So don't take it all seriously"; pick a slogan that describes your product accurately, not one that is just a flashy propaganda phrase for your product... - martalli, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4You reported him for flaming when he merely observed that the screenshots were not unique to your project? It almost sounds like the reporting should go the other way around, but I suspect that the ubuntu and AWN projects would not be as touchy as you.
- lickmyback, on 12/16/2007, -1/+4ELABORATE. The reason people are giving this such a flaming (pun intended) is that it talks itself up but fails to actually say why anyone should use it. From what I can tell, it is Ubuntu with AWN pre-installed and a few fancy fonts - what are the "way more features" that set it apart from Ubuntu? Not a rhetorical question by the way, I would like to know.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+4"Hottest linux distribution to hit the linux market and community."
Buried as inaccurate.
Everybody knows that Ubuntu Satanic Edition is the hottest distro out there.
http://ubuntusatanic.org - xxdesmus, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3what a joke ..."pay for a ISO" ...yeah....riiiiight.
Marked as inaccurate. - commentbot, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3It's probably a company that paid black-hat kids to dig their page til it hits the Digg front page. It's not by chance that you need to buy a CD-ROM to use their distro, although they want to make you believe it's bad timing and that the ISOs will be available "soon". Yeah, right...
- LastDitchHero, on 12/16/2007, -0/+31. Remix Ubunut
2. Sell CDs
3. ?????????
4. PROFIT!!!!
Or do you really need a step 3? - Sabretou, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Why barge into the thread, then?
- Jawshie, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2How long has this project been in the works? Will you be adding a forum soon?
- superyounan1, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2basically a distro with CF and AWN preloaded? Without more info, i'm assuming thats it
- lewisbeech, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Looks awesome IMO. Dugg +1 :)
- commentbot, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2You can pay people to be featured on the front page, you know (check forums.digitalpoint.com), there are tens of kids who do it for $50.
- commentbot, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I couldn't either because I wasn't able to download a copy! Need to order it! Yeah! Bad timing? Yeah, right...
- commentbot, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Absolutely. This goes nowhere. Sorry to be that harsh but it's the truth. Creating a new and successful distro these days takes a lot, lot more than that. The author should just give away and stop losing more time and money with this dubious venture.
- nicktx, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I LOL'ed when I read your comment.
- suitengusaiga, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1I'm going to say, "Underpants desktop environment?"
- martalli, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1I don't think its a joke, as carsenk seems awfully serious.
- mountaincable, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1"Who needs you?" You're asking this to your target demographic, as a software distributor? Good luck on that release of yours.
- commentbot, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Bad start...Very bad start...Most of the web site is pretty much under construction. Any 5-year old could have done it in an afternoon. Now if you have the distro ready, why can't we download it? Why is it available for paid users then? If it's not ready, why featuring it on Digg this early? Could you give us the details how this hit the Digg front page? I personally don't believe in natural user clicking "Digg It" buttons.
- xxdesmus, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1the post was ruined long before I left a comment.
This garbage isn't "next hottest linux distribution to hit the linux market"...the is some no-name distro that will disappear in a year. Mark my words. -
