Go here instead: http://www.puppylinux.com/download/release-3.00.ht ... - iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I don't use, and never will use, puppy linux.
Here's one of the reasons why: http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20070625
I use Ubuntu not just because I like the OS, but because I like the community. - BuckCynnie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9If it was turned into a thin client we could call it Skinny Puppy Linux.
- s1nister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You should prefer a browser with spell check.
- muszek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Yeah, limited to less bloated stuff. Less bloated doesn't always mean less functional. The purpose is not to deliver the newest bells and whistles, but to deliver stuff that works fine on older machines.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Puppy is a damn cool distro to play with. Looks like some good improvements to the underlying system.
- cookiecaper, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I disagree completely. DSL still runs off of 2.4 kernel and won't work on recent machines. It's slightly smaller than Puppy, and the use of Fluxbox is nice, but Puppy is all-around the better, most up-to-date distro for this niche.
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's only as limited as the user is.
- cookiecaper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Awesome. I love Puppy Linux, and it's helped me out of many-a-spot. I find it much better than DSL, although this new release is a little on the heavy side. : )
- eschreib, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Its great to use to host a file server, with the op system residing on a solid state flash drive. No need to partition out your data drives, and makes system restores pretty dang easy.
- BuckCynnie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4When wit fails, the next best attack is spelling and grammar. In this case, though, it was a witty spelling attack.
- mptre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Cool, I haven't heard of Puppy until now but I've tried DSL. Time to install Puppy with VMware on my iMac.
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been using Puppy for the last two three years and I love it
- jagg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Will I be able to actually install puppy on the hard drive and have it boot directly into puppy? I tried to do this on an older PC a while ago and I could never get it working. I could only get it running off of a USB drive, but that's not what I wanted.
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Puppy is perfect for that...it's a live distro, you don't have to install it into the harddrive.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You failed. http://www.skinnypuppy.com/
- blinki, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4s/limited/slick/
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3...Won't work on recent machines? Haven't things been backported?
Care to back up that statement? - ScrappyLaptop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2DSL and Puppy actually have slightly different niches; DSL is a very easy to use small distro. Puppy is a (smaller) very easy to use (but slightly harder to configure) distro optimized to not kill the flash drive it's running from. Yes, you can install it to hdd, but running from flash is it's strong point, considering the unusual configuration.
- Vegiemaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I see what you sed there.
- boobsbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2dsl has not migrated to the 2.6 kernel due to the lack o compatibility and support for older hardware, and yes, things are being backported into the 2.6 kernel, do your research. something else: if you really want the 2.6 kernel you can use dsl - not!, aka dsl-n.
- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Puppy has a program that helps you install it on a flash drive.
- jofes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I have used an open source system for years now. Wonder if it will work on an old laptop with hard drive problems?
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I love being a geek.
- mrpc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I want to install it in an old pentium 3 that I use as cvs server and sometimes to browse when all the other pc's are busy. I have fedora now and I don't really have a problem, but I think a distro like puppy will be better...
- socokoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Personally I like Puppy better than DSL. Feather Linux is another one in this niche.
- cookiecaper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It will. That was one of my primary uses for it, in fact. Had Ubuntu installed, hard drive crapped out. Put in Puppy and continued using the same machine for months. Still works fine, just don't use it as often anymore. Puppy runs great on diskless/disk-damaged machines.
- hardcorerikki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This puppy is turning into a lion ;)
It sure ressurected my superold comps nicely enough. Kudos! I just wish the update manager was smarter, along with a better managed and more recent repository packages - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1KDE has a kiosk mode IIRC that will allow you to lock any application onto the screen. I think Firefox itself has a kiosk mode though.
- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I have an old 233Mhx laptop and the older version of puppy absolutely flew on it. The trouble with it though, is that for my laptop, it uses a usb dongle for the net, and I couldn't see how I could get that working. That said, I found it to be a great OS.
- Lobster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It is still small and cute and being used by more and more people as their main Linux distribution because of its speed and usability. You can boot from CD. No hard disk required. Save on that CD. Wizards to help with setup. Simple to use and enhance for Windows users. A great fun and helpful forum. It is a serious bit of essential geek kit.
- Smogtdi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3good news, puppy 2.16 is on my old 233mmx laptop that run like a champion. I even put it in the desktop amd 3200 just because it's complete, simple and autodetected everything (unlike Ubuntu 7.04)
but yes, DamnSmallLinux is also nice. - jagg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I could never get it to install to, and then boot from the hard drive. I'll have to give it another shot with this version.
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's is a contraction meaning "it is". I believe you meant its.
- raffy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To find focused information about Puppy Linux, please try this: http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html
- flammenwurfer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, you can install it to the harddrive and boot directly to it.
Puppy is awesome! I have installed on both of my grandmothers' old machines. It runs super fast and is easy for them to use and me to set up. - Venky80, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ah that is where I read it . I was not sure in my earlier post (which was dugg down anyway).
Thanks for linking the story. - BuckCynnie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually Mike Vick uses Bait Puppy Linux.
- BuckCynnie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1try this: 'man don't ***** in my house or I send you to Mike Vick', that seems to work for me.
- raffy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I guess Barry Kauler should explain up front that the copyright of his Puppy brand and images are not the same as the GPL license on the software. Like this: "The actual name "Puppy Linux" and my logos are copyrighted to me, which is also legitimate -- that is, does not contravene in any way the GPL licences of the applications in Puppy, or the overall "freeness" of the Puppy-project." - http://www.puppylinux.com/development/project-stat ...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Keep Mike Vick away from this...
- Jdban, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Damn small linux is ugly. Where can I get a guide on how to install and bood Puppy linux from my flash drive?
- raffy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Older gear need older Puppy kit, like the minipup from here:
http://minipc.org/pup - need4speed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1'man potty train' doesn't work.. :(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Burying it as its not completely open-source.
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Look at the bottom of this page:
http://www.puppylinux.com/
He's even copyrighted the dog avatar! - raffy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://safepup.com will make you a kiosk-style live CD, just download and burn the ISO.
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1He'd rather sink his teeth in PuppyLarynx.
- raffy, on 10/18/2007, -1/+0It already runs in thin clients while performing as a desktop suite. See
