- ptFoe, on 01/09/2008, -2/+34Pity about the resolution.
- cardyology, on 01/09/2008, -0/+24This is a proto, right? So maybe they'll change the resolution before the final release?
- Myonosken, on 01/09/2008, -1/+23If it's the same resolution, what's the point?
- johnburk, on 01/09/2008, -0/+20I am still waiting for a 10inch 1024x600 (or 1024x640) version!
- kazamx, on 01/09/2008, -1/+20Dam, now i'm not sure what to do. I was waiting for the V2 for the better screen, but if its going to be the same resolution, there doesn't seem much point.
- niallabrown, on 01/09/2008, -0/+18Is it true that certian buttons in Ubuntu are off screen at this resolution? How bad is it?
- dixonHill, on 01/09/2008, -0/+14OK, well I meant "workaround" as in "a way to get around the problem", not as in "a brand new shiny feature specifically designed for this machine/distro combination only".
I know this feature has been around for a while...I use it all the time on my large screen machine running SuSE. But perhaps not everybody is aware of it, so if it's OK with you, I felt it might be worthwhile to offer others that little bit of assistance in case they were having difficulty running some of the apps on their new Eee PC. M'k? - WorkingDead, on 01/09/2008, -2/+15Dugg for Tux Racer
- tomreynolds, on 01/09/2008, -0/+12In the Ubuntu installer, yes. It makes it kinda tricky to navigate through when you can't see what's there. These all come with Xandros on them by default though.
There is some work being done to get a Xubuntu distro tailored to the EeePC though http://eeepc.tumblr.com/post/21408625 - grexeo, on 01/09/2008, -0/+12That sucks. Most sites are designed for 1024x768 or higher these days.
- dansy, on 01/09/2008, -0/+11I can confirm that the same problem is present in XP, Ubuntu and OSX - today 800*600 is the minimum !!!
But you can notice the new 8.9'' screen still has HUGE margins so the 3rd generation might finally have a 10'' 800*600 ... - dixonHill, on 01/09/2008, -0/+11Some buttons in the pre-installed applications are off-screen as well. Cheesy...but at least there's a workaround...holding Alt and clicking anywhere on the window lets you move it beyond the limits that dragging by the title bar impose.
- schestowitz, on 01/09/2008, -4/+14They ought to get in touch with the OLPC folks. They have good technology for enhancing resolution very affordably. There's even a new startup which capitalises on this at the moment.
- adz999, on 01/09/2008, -0/+10
why an XP ver.? - scrolltom, on 01/09/2008, -0/+10I think this is the 8" screen, which retains the 800x480 resolution. As far as I'm aware, the 8.9" screen would have a 1024x600 resolution and would be housed in a slightly larger casing.
- Philluminati, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9I don't mind a minimal processor and minimal memory etc but the screen resolution just looks a fraction below what I'd like. It feels like the 1 component which needs to be slightly better IMHO.
- Gunsotsu, on 01/09/2008, -3/+12Buried for being too lazy to actually read the article it's linked to. Or the translation of the original article. First of all, the pictured Eee is an 8 inch. Secondly, it's a prototype. No word on what the final resolution would be, so no need for you to get your panties in a bunch.
And for those of you holding off for a 1024x??? version, don't. The argument that most web pages are coded for 1024x768 is a hollow one considering most of the content you would care about, i.e. the current stories on Digg and not the list of most popular, are easily contained within those first 800 pixels. And even for those pages that aren't, many of them still have their main content within 800 pixels, so just scroll on over and see what you need to see.
All of this comment was typed on the obviously inferior 4G Eee PC. And the screen is just perfect as it is. - MikeCerm, on 01/09/2008, -0/+8I love the EeePC, but this resolution is just a non-starter for me. I'm waiting with the hope that the fabled 10" version will have a 1024 x 600 screen in the same form-factor. That would be perfect, assuming they are able to keep it under $500. If it costs more than that, I'll just stick with my XPS M1210.
- MikeCerm, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7Agreed. Considering that the larger screen will use up more battery life and not add any usability, you're probably better off with the 7". Unless they keep the price the same, giving you the larger screen for the same $400, I really don't see what the point is.
- Urza_the_Tyrant, on 01/09/2008, -1/+8Its 8" you *****. Buried for not even being capable of copying Engadget's article title to his blog spam.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/pics-of-prototy ... - Roger, on 01/09/2008, -2/+9Pity there's still quite a large border around the screen.
I'd rather not have speakers if they're gonna make the whole thing look like a cheap toy laptop. - minigig, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7This is not at CES this is a PIC that came from the WEB in the last couple of days as a prototype, you can see in the pic the lotion bottle in the background.
- kazamx, on 01/09/2008, -0/+6They announced a week or two ago that they would be announcing the new eee pc at CES.
- rocke86, on 01/09/2008, -0/+5No resolution scaling? Some UMPCs (Samsung and maybe others) got around using this same resolution by using resolution scaling so you could put a 800x600 or even 1024x768 on the screen. It may be less readable but from what I read it works fine, no clue why they would leave out this important feature.
- jamesshuang, on 01/09/2008, -0/+5Yes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzzhEs9XGuE
- bigteebo, on 01/09/2008, -0/+5My laziness has paid off. I'll wait until the bigger screen version comes out to buy it. Yay!
- JudgeMonkey, on 01/09/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't expect to ever see a version SHIP with xp. But they do include instructions on how to install it.
- PFS1, on 01/09/2008, -0/+4Espeically given that the extra backlighting will only chew battery faster. Go for the first one...it is wonderful little machine and waiting won't get you much in this case.
- gemmakicn, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3You could also use the alternate installer disk.
- jacobmorrison, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3deamn, i was waiting for this. Why still the crappy resolution???
- Magnes, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3That kind of scaling is in Compiz Fusion. But will it run on Eee?
- takeo1775, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3I agree that most sites are designed for higher resolutions nowadays but as an eee user I can say its not that bad at all.
- rodon, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2This photo looks more like:
"Prototype 8.9 Asus EeePC Spotted next to another EeePC, some laptop, and a bottle of moisturizing hand lotion." - hoefx, on 01/09/2008, -1/+3This is the 8" which has the same resolution as the 1st gen. The 8.9" WILL have higher resolution.
- alexforcefive, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Readability, probably. It is a *very* small screen =D
- republikdh, on 01/09/2008, -1/+31" larger and same resolution?
What the hell was the point of that? - Joners, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2@Gunsotsu its not so much a question of web browsing, that maybe one of the reasons but not the total story.
Alot of these machines are now running XP and most native windows apps just dont run well at this res. At 1024*768 it would allow most all apps to run in their native res without messing around with the settings. (if you want more help id have a look at eeeuser.com - forums, and look under the games sections) - directive0, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Can I have your autograph?
- trogdoor, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2It is possible, though not yet intuitive to set up to do that in Compiz, which runs smoothly on the EeePC BTW :)
- flatfish, on 01/09/2008, -2/+3dugg because for once you are actually making sense. The EeePC still needs some tweaking but it's a great idea and the potential is huge.
- ubergeek09, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1It's great how you think you know what your talking about.
- amigabill, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Why is the resolution so bad? It's a small screen... I have a 15inch laptop at 1680x1050 and absolutely hate it. If Windows was better at scaling up fonts without mangling window rendering maybe it'd be OK, but for things to work I have to have fonts that are hard to see they come out so small at this res on this size screen. I won't go higher than 1280x800 next time. If you want 1920x1080 on this tiny screen then you're crazy. 800x480 was in need of improvement on my friend's huge home theater TV projector, but in 9 inches I think it'd be fine.
- trogdoor, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Also, for older machines without 3D acceleration or composite you can use xembed to run Gnome / KDE / whatever in a window in a small window manager like matchbox so you can move your desktop around the screen, and there are probably other ( probably better :) ways to do it as well.
- takeo1775, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1its still highly successful for ASUS
- CoolGoose, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1If you mean a virtual screen that's bigger than the actual one.. you can do that for ages in linux with x.org
- frostw, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1If you want to see what it's like to browse at that res, install the web developer toolbar in Firefox and resize the browser window to 800x480. Personally, I thinks it usable, but only just!
- ha1f, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1They've already confirmed a plan to ship them with XP.
- dixonHill, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Yes they do. Chapter 5 of the manual is titled "installing & Optimizing XP". It requires the use of an external USB 2.0 DVD-ROM. And you must have an XP SP2 CD, since (according to the manual) older versions of XP don't support USB DVD-ROM.
Strange...in the same area where it's talking about the need for a USB DVD-ROM, it also says you need "A USB flash disk (size larger than 1GB) or external hard disk drive", but then also says "Your Eee PC might not be able to detect all the USB flash disks. We recommend you use a USB flash disk smaller than 2 G." So, a USB flash disk that is both "larger than 1GB" and "smaller than 2G"...don't think I've ever seen one of those! (Sounds like the external hard drive might be the better bet anyway.) - bukfu, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1these photos were taken from a Chinese blog, this is a prototype that will NOT be released http://blog.pixnet.net/crazyje/post/12637970
- PRlME, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1plus you can add touch screen to the first one. youtube it
