- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26You can run native Windows applications in Project Looking Glass on Windows by installing Wine and running them as X11 applications
/me has been looking for a reason to do something as ludicrous as installing WINE on windows :) - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Here's the famous video demo (quite old by now):

You can also use the repository provided in TFA and apt-get it. - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Unless you are Microsoft....Then version 3 is THE hug milestone...your product goes from alpha to beta
- drag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10ya. I don't know why you'd want to run it on a Windows machine.
Sure you can run the desktop, but you can't run any of the applications on the desktop. What is the point of that?
Pointless.
If you realy want to use stuff like this you have to using Linux. Nobody is developing this sort of stuff on Windows, not with Microsoft being the only one that can realy write system software.
Maybe after a couple years of Vista being out people will start writing cool and oddball stuff like this looking glass. It depends on how flexible they made it.
That's why you don't see stuff like Beryl being made for OS X. It's technically perfectly capable of it, but Apple has it made all closed off and inflexible. X.org and such is all designed so you can swap out window managers and such. It's all built in layers instead of one monolythic thing.
So if Vista is all flexible and built in parts like X.org/Linux is then you eventually will have odd ball stuff like this if you want it. Just give it another year or two - koonchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9How's the stability? Comments?
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9awww, title got my hopes up. I had a brief vision of a native linux Dark Engine port to play Thief and System Shock 2 on...
The Sun looking glass thing is pretty cool too. - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10well u did do it on an xp machine.. hopfully it runs better on a linux box
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6who remembers WIN3D?
too bad they dont make it anymore...i really had fun with it.

- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I remember saying i would switch to linux for this.. well here i am 3 years later running linux.. and downloading :D anyone know how this compares to say beryl?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I had no idea this was in development, first time I hear about it.
Wiki: "Project Looking Glass is a free software project under the GPL to create an innovative 3D desktop environment for Linux, Solaris, and Windows (Although Windows native applications cannot be used). It is sponsored by Sun Microsystems."
they have a nice livecd in case you don't want to go with the binaries https://lg3d-livecd.dev.java.net/ - bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank you! Really interesting and quite different from Beryl/Compiz.
Yes they are unpolished, unstable, and (so far) more accurately described as "eye candy" than "productivity boosters", but we are witnessing the death of the Desktop metaphor and the advent of new way of interacting with computers. - CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is very impressive! I downloaded Ubuntu and tried it out for a couple months but I ended up switching back to Windows because my Wireless adapter wouldn't work, among other problems I had. I was impressed with everything about the OS except for the hardware driver support and selection of software (and yes I know people say you can get "everything" open source, whatever). Anyway, thanks for posting this video because it really shows off what can be done with this in real-world use. Which, at the moment isn't much, but it looks cool and shows a lot of potential.

Try swiftfox >> http://getswiftfox.com/
If this wont change your mind about browsers in linux, dont know what else will - Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I remember trying that ages ago.
It REALLY sucked, and was annoying to use. - repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6All the server software is written in Java - which means it can handle about 12 users before it slows to a grinding halt.
- nailer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Something unexpected in that video:
Prior art for the patents Apple brought from Coverflow.
(no, using CD covers rather than CD labels doesn't constitute an innovative step in US patent law) - GTanaka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Although Windows native applications cannot be used"
Well, I'm installing it right now, but I'm not quite sure if that sounds any good at all. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wow. We're crashing Sun. Looks like they need a datacenter-in-a-trailer or two.
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More than you have in your system?
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+111.0 is a HUGE milestone for any software project, especially one as involved as PLG. Gratz to everybody involved!
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow - you're an idiot.
- kersk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hmm, sounds cool and all, but there's one problem - I'm no professional web designer or usability expert or anything, but it's a freaking interface and they don't have ANY easy to find screenshots? wtf !
- Kranklin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Well i just installed an tried it on my XP machine.... and so far it just seem like a big P. O. S. It is a bit impressive, but totally useless right now.... Hopefully in the future i may actually have some use for it.
Edit: and I know this is shallow, but the backgrounds for it right now really suck, they are all low res and its not really 3d.... - markr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well - it's good to see that people are trying new things with windowing systems and one day someone will come up with something that genuinely makes things easier for us and challenges our perceptions of usability - but this looks great but gives me nothing useful...
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you cant use backspace....
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Java Web Start demo: http://download.java.net/lg3d/test/lg3d.jnlp
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While this project has reached 1.0 status, I really wouldn't recommend it for every day use. I personally love it, but it's not without it's glitches (Sometimes windows will freeze and other times it hard to move them back to their original position) If you want pretty effects go for aiglx and beryl, if you want a full 3d desktop use lg3d
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im back in gnome now.. it has alot of potential, but i hope they can manage to get it stable enough to use main stream.. i tried watching diggnation on it andit was way to sketcy in vlc.. anyone else try it?
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that's the transparent cube + floating windows that's being aimed for with Beryl at the moment. The differences which I see between the two are the following:
flip the windows around or even upside down (the windows have backsides!).
there's less of a cube feel with LG3D, since there are no taskbars on the borders (unlike Beryl).
The swoosh-in/swoosh-out window titles.
My question about LG3D: is it hardware-accelerated?
XGL/AIGLX is dependent upon the GPU for most of the rendering, hence the Nvidia and ATI driver distribution issues with such distros as Kororaa.
That the web start was able to work for me on a crap HP Pavilion (2003 model) might say that LG3D is a bit more agnostic to the driver that you're using. Please Tell me that's true.... :-( - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, im running now on a thinkpad t60 and on ubuntu 6.10, everything is real nice so far except for firefox, it's slow as hell
- neilo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No kidding, everytime this thing pops up on this or that site my heart jumps up, falls down, and shatters. *sigh* I miss LG Studios.
- foshaug, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Finally, I remember reading about this a few years back, but I forgot all about it.
Currently downloading the megapack for both win xp and ubuntu. - kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Watching the video and seeing all the various screenshots, I'm struck by one thing: this system serves no immediately obvious purpose. How does rendering windows in 3D and having them rotate and spin and all constitute anything more than eye candy? Where is the useful function for this stuff? In the same way that Vista's new 3D window view appears merely cosmetic and an attempt to get back some attention from Mac OS's Exposé, this seems like another "Me too!" attempt to wow people with looks rather than a meaningful or useful tool. Personally I don't use Exposé much on my Mac, but even that serves a more immediate function (show me all my open windows at once). This just seems like pointless frippery to me.
Anybody care to explain why this is so revolutionary/groundbreaking/useful? - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What are the system requirements?
- crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Windows Presentation Foundation opens up this type of development on Windows. You can do cool effects in your apps like these.
- wildkarde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2could someone give us some screenies?
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agreed - WPF is a great framework for this sort of thing. It is stable, the tools are free and the betas run really, really well.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sun has advanced no where near what Compiz and Beryl have considering the amount of time they have spent on this crap. No self-respecting Linux user wants a Java Desktop.
- Junpei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was excited for this and kept refreshing until the server came back up, but it turns out its not much. I'm really disappointed, its just some cool eye candy that feels gimmicky.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. It's very cool, but nowhere near efficient... and people say Java isn't much slower than C. Compare this to Xgl+Beryl. You can't even put it on the developers this time, as it was Sun freaking Microsystems coding this.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It allows the user to control their desktop and manipulate it further like real world objects. The idea is that the user should be able to manipulate objects on the screen in the same way that that one would move a remote control or paper on the desk. If you look at other projects by engineers like jeff han http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89sz8ExZndc you can see how stuff like this would be useful
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Java3D directly accesses OpenGL on Linux and Direct3D on Windows, it does use the actual C libraries. The problem is likely that the software isn't mature yet. Nothing to do with the standard of developers but the amount of resources available to them.
Sun are talking about moving away from Java3D and encouraging JOGL use anyway in order to maintain consistency between different OSes. Not to mention that Direct3D is junk and should be avoided where possible anyway. That should improve performance since there would be one less layer of abstraction. I don't know if the PLG team would drop Java3D for JOGL though. - parapoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what i remember was installing this to my thinkpad running debian and it was ridiculously slow. i am excited to try it again after it gets good feedback from the community. this innovation is not just a fancy desktop - rather adds a functionality that flat desktops or window managers cant provide.
