- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm really looking forward to this release, it sounds like it is going to be a big step forward for the KDE team. I'm glad to see that they talk a lot about trying to keep it lightweight, but still adding more functionality and a more robust graphical interface. This is shaping up for a big release, a big overhaul of KDE 3.5 and previous versions.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still unsure about this. One shouldn't believe it is excellent until we get to see and know more about KDE 4. I just hope it can match or surpass OS X. However, surpassing it, I doubt it.
I've never liked KDE, nor Gnome. Sure they have some features I like, but overall, I'm not impressed by either. - gusx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure if those are real pictures or just mock up but here are some screenshot i found from a foreign website :

I really hope we can see some screenshots or even better videos soon and that in the end they just live up to the hype and surpass it
- Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't just great for KDE, it's great for Linux period. In my opinion all the window managers have been less than desireable compared to OS X's Aqua. Now Linux will finally be able to shine with a great looking GUI.

Yeah, absence of screenshots kind of take the "view" out of "preview", doesn't it? - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was traditionally a KDE person, then switched over to Gnome. I currently run Gnome, but am excited to see what kind of things KDE can bring in the next release. I'd happily switch if it lives up to the hype.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes I agree, for those who are interested this is the next generation of desktop
from Raskin Center
http://rchi.raskincenter.org/demos/zoomdemo.swf - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope KDE get rid of the extremely annoying fading of minimised task bar applications that aren't used frequently. I could find no way to turn off this abomination in the current KDE, and making the user squint just so that they can read the list of applications they have running is pretty dumb human interface design. Fix it, KDE!
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would love to see some screenshots.
- serkanozcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good job for KDE team
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main benefit of making KDE more robust is to avoid the complexity of the Operating system to the general user, just like windows is doing with commandPrompt(TM).
But if you are experienced, most likely you are not using KDE instead a lightweight wm like windowMaker or fluxbox. - ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next generation desktops are looking better and more functional all the time. 2006/2008 we're going to see HUGE jumps in the way we work.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I run Gnome, but use elements of KDE such as the kicker for my bottom and side panels.
As soon as the KDE people stop putting a "K" in front of every program I'll start using it.
Konqueror and Konsole are okay, however when you get to programs like KDissert and KTron (off the top of my head) it's going a little far. - Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been away from Linux for a while, and I plan to take the Mac plunge sometimes next year, but I always keep an eye on the KDE developments because I love the direction they've been going in. Very high-quality desktop environment. Good work guys & gals!
- masterremus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking foward to it; i'm running PCLinuxOS can't wait :)
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, if I read what he said correctly, KDE is going to be available on OS X and Windows? :O
- LewsTherin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great. Not only is KDE getting better, because it uses standards like those from fd.o I can take advantage of its improvements without running a full KDE session.
- UrbenLegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet! There's gonna be dashboard widgets!
- akilleen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like it should be sweet. I like that they are using COMPOSITE and such. I really think X can be part of a superior interface, it is just going to take some work and some time.
How are xorg's ATI drivers running? Last time I tried any X drivers for ATI, they were pretty shakey, and performance was pretty bad. - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to say I'm using KDE 3.5 on one of my machines now and it is fantastic. From that article 4.0 sounds even better, can't wait till they release this bad boy (I'll even deal with a little instability and use the beta just to test out the new tech).
- irabinovitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aaron Seigo will be speaking at SCALE 4x on Feb 11-12 at the Los Angeles Airport Radisson. http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/speakers/speakers_seigo.php
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Yeah, absence of screenshots kind of take the "view" out of "preview", doesn't it?"
I agree, that's why I added Interview w/ KDE developer to the title so people wouldn't be thinking it was screenshots. I'd love to see some screenshots also. - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1akilleen;
I just installed some ATI drivers the other day on Suse 10 and it was easy to do and it worked great. Before I installed it I was getting around a hundred something or two hundred something frames per second with glxgears and then I installed the driver and am getting over 1,000 FPS with glxgears. They have a graphical installer now too. I haven't installed it just through that though so I'm not sure how good that works. What I did was generate a distribution specific RPM for Suse 10 through the installer and then installed that and ran sax with this certain parameters and it works great. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see the KDE team ignore feature additions for an entire release and focus on bugfixes and fixes for general annoyances. KDE is great, but too many quirks go unaddressed. I'm looking forward to seeing what is done with version 4.
"But if you are experienced, most likely you are not using KDE instead a lightweight wm like windowMaker or fluxbox."
And some of us that are more experienced get to the point where we expect more a window manager/desktop environment to do more than just draw window borders and put icons on the desktop :) - ninjafoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a nice interview, but we're already excited about kde4. What we really want is screen shots!
- energeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Some day KDE will catch up with OS X... wait, no they won't. Does KDE have any features worth mentioning that weren't copied from Microsoft, Apple, or Gnome?"
Hey dude? ever used KDE? We have KIOSlaves, almost complete network transparency, Customisable look and feel(all windows has is crappy themes), support for transparency(vista only has titlebars translucent, KDE has an whole array of integrated apps, and we have a hell of a lot of customisation options, which allow you to make your desktop 'perfect' for you. Now this surely beats windows, GNOME might be good too, but until they make the look and feel a little smooth and shiny, instead of a dull humanisation and redefine the icons they are not getting close. And as for the MAC. First they are way older than KDE, and they have a lot of bucks. Give that to KDE and see where it goes. And do you realise that the project is giving all these improvements without needing a major hardware upgrade unlike Vista. Try KDE for a few days and then badmouth it OK - Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good read, I was hoping for a picture, but the interview was interesting enough. I can't wait till KDE4, if they release it on windows as well that will be awesome.
- akilleen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AdamCo:
Sweet, I think I will have to get Linux going on my desktop machine again. Do the newer ATI drivers support Composite? - spathe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no screenshot no digg.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd say, with a good looking GUI, a HIG (Finally, some usability), and a great level of abstraction, KDE4 looks extremely attractive.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"KDE, as always, tries desperately to compete with the GUI of Windows 98, seemingly blissfully unaware of the human interface evolution that has taken place over the last decade."
Huh? I use KDE at work and It's *beautiful*. Kioslave technology is second to none in the industry. KDE 3.5 lags only behind OS X, and in some peoples' opinion Gnome, in look and feel. Its functionality is miles ahead of XP, OS X and Gnome for programmers and sysadmins while it does fall behind XP and OS X in terms of general user features.
A quick Google search found this mediocre desktop screenshot, but it should be enough to show that KDE is very different from Windows 98. http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33728 - Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1>2006/2008 we're going to see HUGE jumps in the way we work.
Ok, I bite.... what? how?
Holographic screens? Projected keyboards? Built in cofee makers? Tabs in IE?
>tries desperately to compete with the GUI of Windows 98, seemingly blissfully >unaware of the human interface evolution that has taken place over the last decade.
I love the people who get so carried away with the looks of GUI's and even more those that give me chubbies when they use words like 'human interface evolution'.
I use Win 98, XP and 2000 and couldnt care less about how it looks (actually, I have to turn off the XP fluorescent blue so that I dont get a headache so I always modify it) and have used Gnome when I had a roommate and KDE now that I use Kubuntu. I dont work any faster just because the GUI is nicer.
And while I may be a dorky geek who cares about getting his work done well and on time, you Ilyag, are a poseur, a follower who believes in form over functionality just like the 14 years old who buys 98Degrees because the guys are 'cute'.
Fine, I have no problems with poofters who need to show off the hair extensions, capped teeth, clothes and really cool GUI since you are what makes the economy run.
