Poll indicates GNOME the most popular desktop environment
linuxhelp.blogspot.com — Poll participated by nearly 900 Linux users indicate that GNOME is the most used Desktop environment with KDE close behind. Around 7% of the users favored Xfce. The poll was open for roughly 2 weeks.

- Blazeix, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Actually, 900 people is a very stable sample size. You can get suprisingly accurate results from using a sample size that large (around plus or minus 3%, with a 95% confidence level). The biggest source of inaccuracy in this poll is most likely the fact that this poll took place on linuxhelp.blogspot.com, a blog most likely to be visited by people new to Linux, and by extension mostly using Ubuntu.

- HerbertScrunge, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5That agrees very closely with the much larger and more publicised poll, here:

Does anyone know if the poll mentioned in the blog was multiple choice or not? - ssam, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2i would expect that people using linux as a corporate desktop wont be reading linux sites. the big linux rollouts are usually redhat and suse.
i wonder if kde 4 will change these figures - GMorgan, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Would have been difficult to see Gnome overtaking KDE a few years back. We could cite Ubuntu as the cause but kudo's for the Gnome team for doing some impressive work. The best thing is Gnome have driven the KDE team to even greater heights. Will be interesting to see this again 3 years from now.

- DevastatorIIC, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Another poll here (albeit smaller) shows KDE in favor: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/2006-linux ...
I think people will just use what they are given. Ubuntu is so popular now, people just use what's there. Were KDE default, I'm sure people wouldn't care and just use it. - CoolGoose, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Well Gnome is so popular right now thanks to Ubuntu. When Mandriva/SuSe were on the top KDE was more popular bla bla bla.
PS:
I use Gnome :) - Clp727, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I use Gnome, and like it's appearance. I like the features that are available with KDE. Maybe they could team up?
- jcbdiggers, on 10/20/2007, -0/+1Don't even go there Lol!
