Pocket PC + Ubuntu = True Love
pocketpcmag.com — The biggest vendor lock I am experiencing is that of Pocket PC (can't do without it) + Windows. This article explains how to get Pocket PC and Ubuntu to play nice... albeit with some annoyances.

- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's really Multisync that gives the "love". Palm devices (among others) have the same capabilities.
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8the howto on the Ubuntu Wiki is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PocketPCHowto - Dankoozy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16now if you could only install ubuntu on the pocketPC itself. I know people have ported linux to some of the older ones but the new ones are probably a lot harder with anti-modification DRM stuff built in.
- kirushik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4My hx4700 suits well for Familiar: http://familiar.handhelds.org/
They say it works bad on large number of modern devices, but it's not always as bad as it is said.

All in all, do it on your own risk - sinembarg0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have linux (I think ts GPE, not Familiar) on an old iPaq of mine. I don't like it at all, it's hard to use the CLI (no keyboard) its hard to find software that works with it, I found no mention of which package manageent it uses when I installed it, so overal, t wasn't simple enough.

- linkin1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I'm amazed to report that I am able to synchronize with Ubuntu! Not only is this fact amazing standing by itself, it is even more incredible when one considers that I cannot even synchronize this data with Vista (see my complaint to this effect here)!

lol classic microsoft stories- wycheck89yo, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1yo link be missing
- WhoDey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2So the guy named "linkin1" didn't add his link? Priceless.
- dramatools, on 10/11/2007, -14/+4Unabashed Mac hate. No digg.
- Punjabi4Lyfe, on 10/11/2007, -13/+0F'ing geek. How about he focuses on his social life first.
- amoo3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+44Am I the only one who though this was going to be about Ubuntu Mobile?
- robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Yes. I was rather disappointed upon seeing this was yet another "howto" from the desk of Captain Obvious.
- nailer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Probably not, but the rest of us were clued in by the words 'Pocket PC' subtly hidden in the title. :^)
- digitalmob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I used to have one of the original Axims. I wanted to get it to work with Linux but I never could get it to work. I gave it away a while back, though, so I can't tell if it's any easier.
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Cool! Microsoft Activesync is the buggiest piece of garbage ever... I still can't get it to work on my wife's PC after months of trying... I don't understand why it is so difficult to set up properly... the connection just crashes and crashes for no reason...
Now I have an alternative! Thank you!!! - StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11The title is a bit misleading until you actually Read the article. I thought the article was going to talk about Ubuntu on Pocket PC.
- wycheck89yo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3which would have been awesome! I wouldn't have clicked the link if it said "syncing Windoze CE based handheld with Ubuntu"
*edit: dug you for saving me from actually having to read it and being disappointed*
- wycheck89yo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3which would have been awesome! I wouldn't have clicked the link if it said "syncing Windoze CE based handheld with Ubuntu"
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I'm disappointed. I thought it was going to talk about replacing Windows Mobile with Ubuntu ON the Pocket PC.
- thatbuncha, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0i wish the name Ubuntu was different. just the name wears me out. i'm sure it's great...the name is awful.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That's amazing if it works because I had virtually no luck getting my Win mobile phone to work with Vista using whatever incarnaiton of ActiveSync exists there. I also had no luck with my Mac using MissingSync. Vista I can't explain but MissingSync actually lists my phone as supported so the fact that it doesn't work (and people on the forums confirm this) is annoying. Apparently *some* features work so it's advertised as compatible. Too bad syncing your calendar, contacts and tasks aren't any of those features that work...
So yeah it seems to me that Windows mobile devices barely even work with Microsoft's own products never-mind someone else's. My $400 phone is now used mainly for making phone calls and the occasional email. - JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Am I the only one who ***** HATES Pocket PC but is forced to use it?
It's like WfW 3.11, but with less functionality.- AtWorkSurfer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I more or less hate PocketPC (WM5 actually) but I feel forced to use it because I know of no other solution that allows me to sit down at any computer, or pull out my smartphone (which actually behaves as if it's retarded) and BAM I have all my e-mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks, all perfectly and instantly synchronized. Even though it kills me to do so, I actually pay out of my own pocket every month for a hosted Exchange account from 1&1.
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I like pocket PC... prefer it over palm, 'cos it's more powerful and acts more like a computer... but the activesync is the worst thing ever! I honestly don't know what retard programmed that, 'cos it fails 50% of the time, and I'm nor the only one complaining about it... it's beyond a joke... the other big problem with pocketPC or windows mobile or whatever they are calling it this week is that there are like 50 completely different versions of the software and hardware platforms which are like 80% compatible with one another... oy!
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2People have been installing linux on pocket PC devices for at least 5 years now.
- matriculated, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'd probably install Linux but there probably are no drivers for my CF Wifi card.
- valkyries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2the 770 and the N800 have been doing for a few years now and has built in wifi
- joshuaok, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Buried for being an Apple bigot. I can't respect the opinion of someone who hates a computing platform. Ignorance...

Nokia N800 for the WIN!!!!- valkyries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3the nokia 770 and the N800 both run linux and have much better lcd screens(high res)
- nailer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The N800 and N770 are great device, but they're not telephones, which a lot of people want.
- badapplestudio, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Please refrain from putting dumb NOOB ***** on the front page.
