- Metaleks, on 07/13/2008, -0/+7This blog cannot read between the lines. Firstly, some of the "lets make X have tabs!!11!1" were just jokes. Take a look at planet.gnome. Secondly, most of the programs like Nautilus, which is your friggen' file manager, would GREATLY benefit from tabs. Banshee, the music player (media manager now, ever since it got the ability to handle videos, as well) would also benefit from tabs.
- cornflakepirate, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6Congratulations on not getting the joke.
- raynevandunem, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4The only way that I'd agree with a movie player having tabs for different movies being played within the same window would be if there was a way to choose from and open movies from the filesystem within the window. That way, I can find a random video and then middle-click it to open it up for later viewing. I'd say something like a Firefox history sidebar or OS X-like side drawer would be necessary for tabbed browsing of movies within the same window.
Without such an addition alongside, I fail to see the need for tabs in such an application as a media player.
Also, I'm surprised that such an application as Miro (based on Firefox, meant for viewing downloaded videos from the web) doesn't allow for tabbed browsing, which would allow for better multitasking.
So it's not necessarily the appropriateness of the tabs or the placement of tabs in an application, but exactly how these tabs are implemented as part of the application's overall user experience. - Technophobia, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4As long as you can turn it all on and off I see no problem.
- phatboye, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5People are afraid of change. I for one welcome our new tabbed applications.
- ThreeDee912, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4Well, I do see how in some cases it would be functional. Instead of having a bunch of windows cluttering your screen, you would have one program window open. But in some cases (like the Movie Player example) that would be kinda stupid.
- ToadLeg, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4I'd err on the side of trusting that the Gnome developers know what they're doing, because they're the ones who have to deal with the code that they create. I think this "tabs mania" might be a response to people complaining about there not being enough tabs in programs like Nautilus, the file browser. Well, the Gnome developers responded, and will make sure that you are never short of tabs again. If it can be turned off, it is a non-issue.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Tabs FTW, WTF?
Also I love how I'm forced to click a tiny picture which, even when enlarged I can't see what the ***** it is. Genius designers there! :D - KhaaL, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5We're speaking about gnome here. Options for toggling things on and off are considered confusing and therefore blasphemy

- srg13, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Heh... All this tab madness was photoshoped (or gimped), or just screenshots with changed glade files for a joke....
Nautilus is the only one that actually does have tabs. - stevenbrown, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1THIS IS MADNESS
- CoolGoose, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Dugg the story just that other people can read the comments and understand that it's a joke.
Thank you. - dualscreenman, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I lol'd at tabs in tabs, though.
- advix, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1And vertical tabs with rotated labels are the best of usability.
- known, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1To GNOME:
As of today Browsers, Cell Phones and ATM (Automatic Teller Machines) are very easy for a LAYMAN to use when compared to Windows.
Hence I'd suggest you to follow the USABILITY principles for Browsers,ATMs and Cell Phones to capture the Windows market share. - geoken, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1The best was D-bus tabs.

"Now you might be saying, I can’t see these tabs. Because of constraints of the D-Bus system, namely not having a GUI, we had to add virtual tabs. Don’t worry, they are there" - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Tabs aren't always bad, just in the way they showed them..
