- colonels1020, on 09/08/2008, -2/+64Title should read: "7 Steps to make your Ubuntu desktop look more like a Mac"
- allyant, on 09/08/2008, -2/+39aka "How to make Ubuntu look like OSX".
- roebeet, on 09/08/2008, -1/+24Although I've seen a lot of similar articles, this one is short and sweet - Dugg and bookmarked.
- iofthestorm, on 09/08/2008, -8/+27Step 1: Install KDE 4.1
*ducks* - wrek, on 09/08/2008, -0/+13Same.. nice write-up. Step-by-step eye-candy. Hyphens.
- iMattK, on 09/08/2008, -0/+13Thanks for including accompanying pictures as that move makes understanding this subject possible.
- vhannon, on 09/08/2008, -7/+20Assuming of course that pimping means making it look like a mac...no thx
- s.lucero, on 09/08/2008, -2/+14instead of imitating OS X, why not go somewhere completely original? To me, It just comes off as a rough version of OS X...
- webcrumb, on 09/08/2008, -0/+10I don't know, I put on my wizard hat and get my wand out whenever I feel like a bit of bash...
That sounded wrong... - Ademan, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8I'll keep my useful package manager thank you...
- Carburetor, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8Nice, but if you're using gnome, there are way better themes for your system.
elegant brit, for instance.

with this emerald theme:

Plus compiz fusion = awesome.
Just awesome.
that was my chosen one before switching to kde 4.1 - Carburetor, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9You don't turn it into Mac, you just make your gui look like Mac.
It's not like you're installing cracked/hacked osx and make it somehow working on your pc,
with drivers compability.
That's the beautiy of linux, you can fit it to your own needs and taste ( even when it comes to gui stuff) - BeatPunchbeef, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9No
- pprkut, on 09/08/2008, -5/+12So basically, turn it into a Mac? Digg me down all you want, but tis true, look at the menu bar, "Dock" etc. Even the clock gadget is the same!
- flawedprefect, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7To all the "make it look like a Mac" people - The macOSX dock and much of its functionality was "copied" from the BSD desktop. The dock is a functional graphical interface that isn't specific to mac, just as tabbed browsing is not specific to Firefox. Anything that can make your desktop experience simpler, cleaner and prettier is a good thing.
- colonelpanic414, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. Yes, it's an os.
Where did you get the idea that it's a theme for WinXP? Unless you got it confused with http://wubi-installer.org/ out. You can install Ubuntu within your Windows partition without reformatting.
I hope that helps. - ZephyrNinety, on 09/08/2008, -3/+9How to make Ubuntu look like OS X!
- mik3pass, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu needs its own look.
Sure, Mac OS X does look pretty nice, which is probably one of its most redeeming features, but Ubuntu isn't Mac. They need to be coming out with their own dedicated look, like KDE 4 team did. - MicrosoftBob, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5Keep your Vista away from my Ubuntu!
- billflu, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6Sometimes too many bells and whistles are a bad thing. I prefer simple, clean and functional.

- etcimon, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5The laws of offer and demand don't apply for apple, that's why stuff like this go so popular; Macs are being sold as luxury items. They're just plain old computers boys. Hey to a lot of people, the imposed silky smooth look of Mac OS X software and case is the way to go and they pay 2 times more for a computer with same specs. I can already hear fanboy's "but it's not the same thing...". Bury me if you want, I know I'm part of a minority signing doubts about the apple monopoly... Go Ubuntu!
- SonicEarth, on 09/08/2008, -2/+6I thought this was going to be an interesting article until I found out it was yet another "make Ubuntu look like OSX" article. OSX doesn't even look that nice. I find its UI annoying and kiddy. I am perfectly happy with the blubuntu theme with some extra compiz settings.
- silkysaul, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4ewwwwwwwwwww lol, I'm sorry =(
- purduecory, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Woot you installed OSX on your Toshiba?
Are we supposed to be impressed? - Hermmunster, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4KDE has some decent features but it is a far cry from being complete or being capable. It is useable under most circumstances if one is willing to put up with all those things that make it annoying. I've tried KDE 4 through 4.1 and I'm not impressed. Even simple obvious things haven't been addressed.
They are solidly headed in a direction which could yield an incredible desktop but they are a far cry from being able to sell that even to the linux masses (all 50 million world wide users). - sigmaman2, on 09/08/2008, -1/+5Don't be afraid of the CLI. If you can type a sentence here, you can type a sentence into a terminal...
"sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx compizconfig-settings-manager avant-window-navigator screenlets" - Ademan, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3I agree, but you can still use a more attractive window border... if you're using metacity (I assume you are) blended is an awesome theme that's not gaudy but is still pretty. blended+clearlooks is what I keep coming back to.
Blended: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Blended?con ...
Clearlooks: I'm sure you already know... - neasteflorin, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Thank you!
- roebeet, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Your point? The beauty of Linux / Ubuntu is that you can make it look like anything you want, including Mac OS. There's more to Mac OS (and Linux) that its GUI....
- neasteflorin, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Thanks!
- mikek814, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4Love it, gonna try it tonight
- northZephyr, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3As someone who has English as a third language, I understood that Ubuntu was created based on the concept of Linux' design, but being completely independent.
Im sorry that you got offensed by my misunderstanding - MicrosoftBob, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Yeah, that was kind of a strange comment.
Business = blue, afaik. - neasteflorin, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Big thanks!
- schestowitz, on 09/08/2008, -3/+6It depends on taste. It the end it widely states:
"This is just the tip of the iceberg; there are countless ways to mod Ubuntu - from Grub bootloader themes to GDM, you'll find loads of great stuff over at these sites:
-Gnome Look - Eyecandy for your Gnome Desktop
-Gnome Art - Another great site
-or if you're looking for that complete Mac OS X look, check out this tutorial." - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3make that two..
- neasteflorin, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3We try to make these tutorials as easy to follow as possible so everyone can enjoy them!
- Hermmunster, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2He installed OS X on his toshiba. The sad thing is that his computer makes the whole thing look bad. Seems a bit dark too.
- Hermmunster, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Actually I think you meant there's more to Linux than the look of its GUI.
- hipnerd, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3OK. As soon as you stop trying to make your Mac work like a *nix box. We'll take Darwin back now, please.
- SDL486, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Are you being sarcastic or is this a joke?
- Robzzz, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Nice tutorial... Well written and easy to follow
- wastern, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2if "pimping ubuntu" = making it look and function as close to OS X as possible, why not just use OS X. It seems like a lot of work for no reason. All these people hate on OS X, then go out and spend a large amount of time finding ways to look like it
Use the OS how it was meant to be used. I use OS X and Ubuntu, and my Ubuntu looks like Ubuntu. It works better that way. I do like the slab menu from Suse and add that in, but its still not trying to be something its not - morepowerr, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Think maybe he has like of imagination.
- dhughes, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2 I just removed AWN today, it was OK except for an annoying vertical white line that wouldn't go away and the resizing of the dock/bar each time an app or a window closed. I resized it and lost everything I added to it, so that was the end of that experiment. Although it was fun having just it and no other panels, a very clean look.
- roebeet, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Yes, the article is to make the GUI more OSX-like. But, that doesn't automatically mean that we should all run out and get a Mac, then. What I love about Gnome / Linux is that you CAN change all these things - or mix and match the interface however you want (which is what I do). This is only the GUI - how the OS runs under the hood is still very different.
- MattBD, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2I did and quite frankly it's a pile of *****. Give me Ubuntu any day.
- flatfish, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Great article!
Comes at the perfect time for me because I am new to Ubuntu, and Gnome in particular but not new to Linux.
Thanks for sharing - pandaking, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Best theme I have seen:
