- boodigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Their engines are some of the best in the world for what they aspire to do. Their diesel engines are top of the class and is why Ford works in agreement with them for the HDi range. While their lower end sub 2L engines are economical and punchy hence BMW now using the 1.6 207 engine in the Mini,
- boodigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Because Ubuntu isn't a Linux enterprise system of choice? The options really being Novell and Red Hat.
The better question would be to ask why they aren't using Mandriva... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15Because everyone doesn't want to use ubuntu, no matter what the fanboy propaganda says.
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They seemed to be up on new hardware and evaluated that "New Hardware + Vista" is more expensive than SLED while keeping current hardware and benefit in TCO and ROI.
- simonwalton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10My father's 406 engine has only recently given up the ghost, after 280,000 miles of reliable service. For a petrol engine, I would say that is not bad. I'm not sure what your statement is based on.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Hahaha! You've got to be American right? Peugeot's turbo diesel engines are classed as one of the best in the world pal. You want bad cars? Look no further than your own rust buckets: Ford.
- dasunst3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Even if that's the case, if this does indeed provide a cost savings to the company (licensing fees and the fact that they get to keep the machine for longer), then more power to them.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Actually, I'm quite interested as to what exactly drove them to switching to Linux. Is it its robustness, or its openness, or lack of license fees? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that Peugeot is starting to lose their sales recently, so switching to linux might help save costs perhaps? Just speculation...
- ender78, on 10/10/2007, -3/+819000 of those users will likely not even know they are using Linux. Many of those machines are to go on the production floor where they will likely just be a back-end to the same apps they run today. Saying that no training will be given to these 20K desktop users is hilarious.
- leexy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7No. By no mean does paying for your distro "defeat the purpose of Linux". Linux isn't about being cheap as you make it sound. It's about being open and fully hackable. That they picked SuSE (yeah, I know, I'm getting old...) over some more ethical distribution doesn't make me too happy. Novell struck a deal with the devil at Redmond - where a few chairs are evidently flying - but there's more to it than that. Major corps/institutions that migrate to Linux are bound to make it better and ensure those hardware manufacturers take Linux seriously driver-wise. Also, people tend to go towards RH, Ubuntu, and Suse for the support. Peugeot could have made a customized version of, say Debian, but then they'll be stuck supporting it. Not the kind of hassle the board would approve.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ack, friendly fire.
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Everything is perfectly fine. They pay for the enterprise support and services. Which is what people always come up with when people ask where the money is in FOSS.
- Breepee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Maybe they had licenses for W2K and/or the support term was ending, or they wanted new software to implement new things in and they wanted to do that with the future in mind.
- lolhax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5And I suppose browsing digg isn't one of them, so why are you here?
- cico, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Don't forget to save money to buy the fantastic peugeot 308 RC Z !
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/209716/peugeot_308_rc_z.html - tdskate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I am very happy with my Peugeot, it's a great car manufacturer and they're starting to gain popularity!
- PuffyC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Convert from what? And how many 'planned' conversions never take place or are disasters. Call me when it's done and it's a success. That's the kind of article I'd like to see.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Office 2007 sucks. What self respecting business uses fisher-price designed software?
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6You seem not to have tried it yet as it is neither of what you describe.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The price is not the purpose of Linux. It is an unintentional side effect. The real benefit of FOSS (for business) is peer reviewed code.
Both the FSF and the OSI agree that price is merely a side effect and encourage anyone who can to make money from FOSS. - hiro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Not really, you'd have to drive a Peugeot.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Wait.. isn't SUSE free? I remember installing SUSE on my machine.............. twice..... till I got pissed from it and I switched to ubuntu..
- astrostream, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3but why do you think all the employees of a company should get a very expensive program that they'll use only 5-10% of it?
I see that as a waste of money. - daven1986, on 10/10/2007, -12/+14notice how they aren't using ubuntu
- r00tus3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why's he getting dug down. My first bike was from peugeot, and it rocked!
- adam.skinner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2A lot of newer car stereos come equipped with USB slots to plug in your MP3 sticks. Amarok isn't something you'd use in the car anyway. It's a full fledged desktop application.
- adam.skinner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apples and oranges. Tons of people use linux on the server. My company does it. But not on the desktop (at least not outside of developers).
- willcoll, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3***** you, we're talking about cars here!
- thinman1189, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Indeed, I have a copy of opensuse sitting right in front of me.
- adam.skinner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Would this be the same 19K that don't know how to work on Windows?
- r00tus3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Watch your ***** mouth boy. Peugeot 205 t16 turbo. One of the greatest machines every made.
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only type of person that keeps bringing up Ubuntu in EVERY NOT UBUNTU related post, are ANTI-Boys like YOU.
- EmileVictor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2When I last went to sochaux they were doing pretty damn well, and that was less than a year ago.
- addictedd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As said earlier:
"Because Ubuntu isn't a Linux enterprise system of choice? The options really being Novell and Red Hat. The better question would be to ask why they aren't using Mandriva..."
Stupid unbuntu fanboy. - zouhair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Jesus, people still don't get it, Free Software has nothing to do with money, you can sell and buy Free Software, Free is about Freedom of use and share and play with the code source and distribute as you wish not as free beer. You can make a Free Software and sell it if you want but as a Free Software you are not allowed to tell people what they do with what you sold them, unless they want to distributed back as Closed Source.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Now they should convert their cars' dashboards to linux. Imagine how sweet it would be to run Amarok in your car ^__^ .. or have a USB port where anybody can plug in his USB stick and listen to the songs they got.. ah the possibilities is endless!
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Last time I checked openSUSE is not SLED .. Ok.. just checked again and yup, openSUSE is still not SLED..
- nickdngr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, since they're switching to linux, they must already have licensed copies of windows running that the users were using. Why the shift to begin with, since it has been going on for a while if they were running a Mandrake pilot program, is a good question.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Peugot has been around a long time, it is well known.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Such a lie. There is no proof that anyone looks at the code more, and the common bugs in all three browsers (IE, Firefox and Opera) has shown that there is no more review in Firefox than any other.
Such a lie. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5The 107 and 207 are good cars.
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not to mention they are not using an European product instead of an American one.
Do not underestimate the power of culture there. Esspecially France is known for choosing French, or otherwise, European products. I wish Holland (my country) would be more like that too. Would be wise. - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dude, don't bash other distro's.
But feel free to complain about all the pre-emptive ubuntu-bashing.
No matter what the topic is. Some troll will start insulting ubuntu for no particular reason. They are the only ones that even bring it up.
I guess, its like a gothic concert or something. Thousands kids that look completely alike claiming they are "just different".
I wonder how if these trolls realize how much they are repeating themselves? - Youff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"What kind of self respecting company goes down towards Linux?"
Boeing, Google, IBM, Amazon... - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Off course you do. You're an ass.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i agree. up until a few months ago i was riding a peugeot. it was amazing. clean design. light for a steal bike (from the '70's) looked way better than most of the newer bikes.
- Samuch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ah, I see. Surely they are concerned about iTunes or Garage Band or maybe playing Halo and being Vista certified on their BUSINESS workstations.
People who have never used Novell's SLED in a workplace environment, especially with the latest service pack, shouldn't chime in on what a third rate OS is. Regardless of licenses, Novell's version of OpenOffice does perform better than the downloadable version at openoffice.org and does just about everything you could need for a normal office. - Lick, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Not that Open Source Software is always inferior, but your statement about MS Office is certainly how I feel as well. People may *think* the GIMP is a Photoshop alternative, but in reality it doesn't come close. Same thing with OpenOffice and MS Office.
And "going down towards Linux" is something I can't agree with. Linux is a *different* mentality, not exactly downwards though. - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly. They pay for the kind of support Microsoft couldn't even get them. If something is broken, they WILL fix it. It they need something customized it CAN be done. As long as you pay. I'm not sure how much you should pay Microsoft to alter your specific version of Windows to your needs. My guess is they just don't, no matter how much you pay.
Which is a very good reason to go to linux. - init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OpenSUSE is free, Novell SLED is not free (as in beer).
