- Portachking, on 11/15/2007, -17/+107It's not going to happen. The whole point of having iTunes on Windows is too familiarize people with the Apple product, and hopefully lure them in when it comes to the time of making a new pc purchase. The last thing they want to do is give people something to make linux more accessible.

Who are you to make these kinds of demands? If the product isn't available on your platform of choice, simply don't buy it. I'm sick of people complaining about the limits of Apple's hardware when these limits were widely known at the time of the purchase. Let your money do the talking. - gavintlgold, on 11/15/2007, -1/+35Actually, I think Apple is intentionally trying to ignore linux. As long as they don't mention it, they don't have to worry about the fact that "PC's" have an alternative to windows. They have never mentioned linux on their ads. The only time they've come close is when they talked about UNIX, but that was just to brag about their secure OS... If they suddenly released itunes for linux, quite a few people would turn heads and perhaps think, "Hmm.. interesting, Linux? Never heard of it!"
- naonao, on 11/13/2007, -2/+30Actually the reason Apple won't is because porting iTunes to Windows made them a massive amount of money and threw them into the top of the portable audio market. Windows was already dominant. Linux is not well known in the mainstream and making well-known apps for Linux will make people more curious about it. Apple do not want that.
- skoles, on 11/15/2007, -12/+40Don't buy products if your machine doesn't support the requirements on the box.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -15/+41Rotten Apple hates Linux, they won't listen to the petition.
- schestowitz, on 11/14/2007, -23/+49Simpler solution: stop buying iPods. Apple doesn't care about GNU/Linux and it never wiil.

Wozniak [Apple co-founder] hates Open Sauce
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/0 ... - mercurysquad, on 11/13/2007, -1/+27The forums registration page lists all OS X and Windows versions, clumping Linux and everything else as Other OS. What do we expect!
- mercurysquad, on 11/13/2007, -9/+34Assuming there was iTunes for Linux and people were petitioning for iTunes Windows, if you swap Windows and Linux, the same argument holds. In other words, there is no reason Apple can't/shouldn't port it to linux for the same reasons that they ported it to windows. The question from a developer's point of view is simply of whether it is worth the effort to support a linux version given the benefits it might produce for Apple.
- mercurysquad, on 11/15/2007, -4/+24Have you ever heard of the term "demand" ?
Why do you think Dell started offering Ubuntu PCs ? - salmonmoose, on 11/13/2007, -5/+25Well, they don't buy operating systems :P
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -6/+25They should do either one of these, it would only further them as a business. Unless they think linux users don't buy music ;)
- jellygraph, on 11/14/2007, -1/+18In pure Apple style, dissenting opinions get banned:

"Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category." - mercurysquad, on 11/15/2007, -1/+18Not at all. OS X and Linux are vastly different, so much that for an application programmer, the underlying OS doesn't even matter - the support libaries (UI, media) etc. are what matter. The kernel is not even that similar.
But given that Apple could port iTunes to Windows, which is already as different as it gets, they should be able to port it to Linux as well. - daftman, on 11/15/2007, -1/+16Exactly! Apple is in the first phase where Microsoft was. Denial/Ignore. Then may be they will start stepping up to the "Laugh/Ridicule" phase
- strabes, on 11/13/2007, -2/+17Please give us the latter. Part of the reason I switched to linux was to get away from terrible pieces of software like iTunes. I'll never buy another iPod because of apple's you-don't-own-the-things-you-buy-from-us and we-don't-care-if-you-can't-use-our-products-on-your-os-of-choice attitude.
- thelastknowngod, on 11/13/2007, -2/+16rockbox has not been released for the ipod classic. unless you know something i dont, there is no way to use it on linux at the moment.
- stmiller, on 11/13/2007, -7/+21iPods work fine in Linux. No need to reformat, install rockbox, or whatever. Many Linux apps can already sync, upload music, pictures, video, etc. as normal. iPod works and functions as normal as if it was syncing to iTunes.
iTunes in Linux would enable the iTunes store for Linux users, but as far as the iPod, it works fine without iTunes.
Wine is the biggest hope for iTunes in Linux. - naonao, on 11/15/2007, -8/+22And it's deleted. Shocking Apple, you're really letting down a lot of people. Even if you don't care about Linux it's not going to do any harm to you're business. Give the people what they want.
- Kamujin, on 11/15/2007, -2/+15No, they'll just keep bashing you for spending too much money for FreeBSD with Quartz.
The Mac OS was a technological dead end and is now extinct. The thing your pretend is a Mac is really a dressed up Unix box.
Maybe an iTunes port would be a nice way to start to repay the open source software community for saving your precious religion.. I mean brand. - daftman, on 11/15/2007, -0/+13Supply and Demand.
Last time I check, those are influenced by the CUSTOMER. - Terc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+13Rockbox works on the iPhone/iPod Touch? Nope!
How am I supposed to manage my iPhone from Ubuntu? So far, apparently Apple doesn't care. I own a 5g iPod, iPhone, Mac Mini, prior to switching from Windows on my main machine, I purchased about 250 songs from iTunes, and have convinced 3 people to buy their own iPhone. Apple doesn't seem to care that I can't sync my phone with my desktop pc because I wasn't willing to buy their $2400 Mac Pro (I do a lot of virtual machine work, and cannot deal with less than 4 drives) I prefer building my own pc anyway. Now, because I've chosen Linux, I'm some sort of sub-par customer? - keyo, on 11/15/2007, -1/+14Apple don't even want people to know that linux is an option. A guy working for novell was going to give a talk at apple about samba ( the networking code apple steal from linux ) but they said he would have to do it on an apple computer. Basicly linux being popular is exactly what apple don't want, it's free, liberal, stable...all the kinds of qualitys that appeal to apple users.
Go and petition samsung or creative instead, they make better mp3 players. - nailer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12Alternatives to Linux? I'm not going to change my OS for a piece of hardware.
What iTunes alternative is there to use my iPhone with? - nailer, on 11/15/2007, -4/+16Because Skype, Lotus Notes, Opera, ID Software, Epic and the rest clearly aren't major software developers.
- stalefries, on 11/13/2007, -2/+14Wozniak has absolutely no control over what Apple does anymore.
- izzybr, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12I'd be happy if we good support for at least one version of itunes through wine. Apple wouldn't even have to do a full port
- lengau, on 11/13/2007, -4/+16Linux is viable competition for OS X, where as Windows isn't Apple ported iTunes to Windows so that 95% (at the time) of the population could buy iPods. Linux is not the same though. They wouldn't be significantly increasing their market share, and when Windows is gone, Linux will be Apple's major competition.
That said, I'd really like for them to open up the iPod. - geehossiphats, on 11/15/2007, -0/+11not with the new ones.
- jeff419, on 11/15/2007, -18/+29***** apple. They spend money making sure Linux users have a hard time using their products. *****.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -5/+16Has an online petition ever done ANYTHING? Naive.
- nailer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+11That's amusing - most people seem to agree the Linux user base isn't much smaller than the Mac's.
- mobilehavoc, on 11/14/2007, -1/+11Darth Jobs and his Stormtroopers have already crushed the rebel uprising on this topic....
- capitapf, on 11/13/2007, -1/+11I don't want iTunes for linux. iTunes is a hunk of ***** compared to amarok or almost any other music player for linux. I do think that they should stop going out of their way to make the iPod incompatible with other software but what does apple care what we think. The only way to make them care is to not buy an ipod. there are plenty of other mp3 players that are superior to the ipod. btw, i thought the new protection had been broken....
- nailer, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13Linux users, being technology enthusiasts, generally spend more money on technology than other computer users.
I've personally owned a 2G 15G iPod, a 5G 60G iPod, and now a 1G 8G iPhone. I also own both a Bose and Apple speakers (can't remember than name of the big white thing, but it's in my loungeroom). I also have owned a Blackberry, Nokia N95, iMate Jasjar (WinMo 5 and then 6) in the last two years. - zwaldowski, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9Fine. That's okay. But can they contribute code to open up the iTunesDB in gtkPod or Amarok? Or just unlock the DB entirely? No, that's against Apple policies. So iTunes it is.
By the way, your logic states that Mac OS X shouldn't exist at all.- - sqrt7744, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9My samsung already works perfectly in Linux - and supports OGG playback... No need to petition anybody!
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -4/+13"...and when Windows is gone..."
Who tells you that Windows will be "gone" someday? A tip: Don't hold your breath. And this is coming from a Linux user. - Archer007, on 11/15/2007, -3/+12Unfortunately, Linux simply does not have a large enough user base to justify another version of iTunes. It's a shame, but it is also a cold, hard truth. Thousands of innovative products never make it to production simply because there is not a way to make a profit on them. If Apple believes that the user base is not big enough, then the software will never be made.
- KloroFormd, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9Windows Media Player in Linux... for the iPod? Real Player?
Please, at least read the whole title next time. - htiawe, on 11/13/2007, -1/+9Give us wireless sync for the iPhone/iTouch instead.
- BrainInAJar, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Yes, amazing...
could it be that Linux users aren't a homogenous group that all acts with a hive mind?
say it ain't so! - troymcdavis, on 11/13/2007, -10/+18Just install RockBox. It's far superior to the Apple firmware, skinable, customizable, it supports more file formats, gives you the option of a directory tree or a database, and the plugins can breath life into those aging iPods (like the mini). Plus, it makes your iPod just an external storage device, so you don't have to deal with iTunes.
- daftman, on 11/15/2007, -3/+10omfg, do every ***** post you make consist of "please backup your claims"? Look, if people have to stop and explain things to you, you're stupid! We're giving you the benefit of the doubt here and let you go and do your own research.
- proton, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7That's kinda part of his joke
- tdhurst, on 11/15/2007, -2/+9You need to look up the definition of monopoly. Apple isn't one.
- hexydes, on 11/15/2007, -5/+12This is a good argument until you realize YOUR ARGUMENT IS RIDICULOUS AND COMPARING SUPPORTERS OF A COMPUTER PLATFORM TO HATEFUL RACISTS IS SILLY AT BEST, DANGEROUSLY IGNORANT AT WORST.
Excuse me, my caps lock sometimes sticks when I am replying to fanatics. - geminitojanus, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Works "better" if you use libgpod from SVN or the newest released version. Still not as great as Gen 4 support, but it lets me do what I need to do with my iPhone on Linux. It'll be pushed with $DISTRO around the next release cycle.
- jigga, on 11/15/2007, -6/+13Exactly. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. It's not like its the only mp3 player on the market. Dugg down
