- CosmoIaccavazi, on 10/20/2007, -1/+24Building laptops yourself is kind of impractical.
- Dankoozy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+13if it bothers you so much just get some solvent or a scraper and take the windows logo off yourself.
it would cost too much to make a new keyboard for a few purists who loathe windows - rapiddemon, on 10/19/2007, -1/+8Good point, he can replace the windows key using Photoshop.
- Gryffydd, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7That is a valid point....though I don't know how many people build their own laptops.....
- heavyal, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7Good review. I could have used this a few months back when I was looking at the Dell offerings for Ubuntu-equipped laptops. After hassling with the Dell order process for almost two months I ended up canceling and going with the Dell Inspiron 1721 which supports Ubuntu very, very well. For some reason Dell was able to get me the 1721 system a lot faster than the 1420 series - they indicated this was due to parts acquisition problems, but I have a feeling that demand for these Ubuntu machines was simply out-pacing their sales expectations (a good thing, certainly). I hated to have to put my money down on a machine that included the Windows tax, but if you are looking for more glitz than the 1420 puts out and delivery is slow as it was a few months back I would definitely recommend the 1720 series.
- Phocion55, on 10/21/2007, -1/+8I went ahead and got one, just because I needed a relatively quick and cheap development box.
Quite happy with it. I will certainly consider purchasing again in the future for another one. - heavyal, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5Yes, it has a windows key on it, but in Linux this key is used as a 'super' key - if you use Compiz Fusion at all you'll notice that much of the keyboard shortcut configurations take advantage of this key.
- sleepykit, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5I own one of these machines, and I'll be honest: two days after getting it and with only the basic knowledge of what Linux may be, I had it working pretty well. The network manager sucks, and in order to adjust the touchpad settings, something extra has to be installed, but between the forums for Ubuntu and Dell help, I got mine up and running fairly fast. Can't complain here!
- Tenoq, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4Not really familiar with the production and manufacturing process, are you?
- grapesofbaath, on 10/21/2007, -4/+8I'm honestly surprised that Linux on a Dell is proving somewhat popular, just because I figured anyone geeky enough to want Linux probably knows how to save a load of money by building a computer himself.
- HerbSolo, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4i loved his last statement:
"The ugly: it's brown"
i don't understand why ubuntu doesn't switch to a friendlier standard-theme. - dicerandom, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3I bought one of these systems and this review is spot on. I'm looking forward to upgrading to Gutsy over the weekend and checking out how many of the minor glitches mentioned in the article have been fixed.

Register and vote on this idea. It's already been going for a long time. A tux key would be great... :D - CosmoIaccavazi, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Nice review and it looks like it's only going to get better with Gutsy Gibbon out
- chriskzoo, on 10/20/2007, -3/+4What's next, Homoerotic Heron?
- wily6, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1lol funny title.
penguins on an inspiron... hehe - stutimandal, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2I am waiting for the day when every Dell Machine will ship with Ubuntu. Go Dell go!
People always blame Dell for innovation, but I think they work much harder on giving good support on common needs. And their pricing is awesome! - WardC, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1I am glad that a major PC maker is now offering a system (or several at that) with a Linux variant as an option - also, there is no word on the price of the "test" laptop they reviewed with Ubuntu. If they offered a sub-$700 Core 2 Linux laptop with a decent display I would be interested, although I paid a hefty amount of coin for my 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, now with 4GB of RAM, ready for Leopard. lol
- HerbSolo, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1My taste IS everybody's taste, see - I'm mister average. - Joke aside, i think there's many out there who don't like the standard-ubuntu theme.
And i don't get all the excitement about this "trying to be innovative" thing. I prefer a good rip-off. I don't care about who had it first, and i hate all those childish "yes but OS-A had it before OS-B" discussions. And i could live with being told "oh - this is a blatant copy of the Mac-OS theme" if it looked better. Really - if you see a good feature, copy it for heaven's sake, don't stay behind just because it wasn't your idea! - gudnbluts, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Even with desktops if you're not after a particularly hi-spec computer you don't save that much by building yourself. Especially when you factor your time into the cost.
If you want a really decent setup, you can save a chunk though, mostly because you can tailor it to your needs and shop around. - sirhomer, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1It's not called the Windows key in Linux :)
- obxjdt, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Yep, both windows keys a disabled by default. You need to bind them to a function.
- Tyr7BE, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1Oh man I hope that's exactly what it's called.
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1That may be but they are cheap for a reason - I have a Dell Inspiron - its utter rubbish.
- acrodev, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1If I hadn't already got mine last night before reading this, I'd be shopping there now. I had to google to find the ubuntu 1420 landing page on dell. With a coupon a la google (>$400), the price was only 1500 for a 2.2 ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram, 160 GB SATA 7200, Dual Layer DVD R/W, and the 1440 X 900 resolution. That's just too good to pass up, even if there's a few weeks wait for the newer parts. In particular, I walked through a checkout again today and now there's a 4 day delay warning with the 2.2 ghz CPU.
- schestowitz, on 10/20/2007, -0/+1GIMP.
- MrTea, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2It's not a windows logo, it's a cape! (super key)
Everyone knows that. - chronichyjinx, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1No but I have the same laptop, and they keys pop off... Thanks for your .02 cents though wiz.
- Tenoq, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Can be done but it's more like building a Shuttle/barebones style system. And the results are crap, and not much cheaper.
- saftaplan, on 10/20/2007, -0/+1Now please Dell, make these laptops available for other countries - not only US + UK + Germany + France.
- saftaplan, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2Because your taste is not everybody's taste and Ubuntu at least tries to be innovative. I would be very disappointed if they would change it to blue/green/orange/silver/... because these colors are already used way too much and it would look like a cheap rip-off OS instead of something new and stylish.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Good to hear! Hack the Planet!
- ilovenicotine, on 10/21/2007, -1/+1I totally agree, I tend to build my computers myself, and my computers are always have medium high specs. My work computer is Dell purchased to my specs instead of building one. Unless I'm playing the latest games it's not worth building a machine myself. So to me the Ubuntu desktop from Dell are very worthwhile.
- sjlilley, on 10/19/2007, -0/+0perhaps they ought to lose the Windows logo on all machines and call it "Super" then or have an icon that isn't Microsoft specific.
(Yes, I do loathe Microsoft and yes all of the keyboards (three) that I use are old enough not to have a Windows/super key.) - inactive, on 10/19/2007, -1/+1Its not even the key - just the print on the key - it would cost ***** all to do. So why dont they do it?
- chronichyjinx, on 10/19/2007, -5/+3one key, not the whole keyboard.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/19/2007, -12/+7Wait, does the keyboard skill have a "windows key" on it? Weak.
- schestowitz, on 10/19/2007, -9/+2Not necessarily. http://schestowitz.com/Amusement/images/dell-linux ...
