an imagination. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15No, I think the Cray XD1 is probably one of the most expensive Linux boxes.
"The XD1 starts at prices under $100,000 and ranges up to $2 million."
http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3417221 - Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yeah... a $600 computer is the most expensive linux box in teh world!!!@%OMG!!!
I'm not usually one for ad hominem, but you're an idiot. - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11as soon as they make a linux driver for the 360 HD-DVD drive, the ps3 will be the ultimate, future proof multi media machine
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That question is worse than murder on digg.
- LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm running Gentoo on my dell laptop which cost me about 1700. This is a bargain.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7msgyrd, There would be absolutely no progress in the world if everyone were like you.

How to install another OS on your PS3!

| Sony even offers hints. Wow! It's like they want us to try different
| OS! They keep showing how gamer-centric they are.

http://playstationteam.com/news/how-to-install-another-os-on-your-ps3.htm - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8then why would they tell you ps3 will have linux on it? why would ALLOW you to install linux on it? this is different than the homebrew on the PSP, Sony is ALLOWING THIS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You're missing a clue. For those of us with HDTVs and a decent media collection, this is one giant step towards getting a fast MythTV frontend that will not only play every type of media across the network, but probably also play Blu-Ray hidef content as well. For $600, a fast, silent MythTV frontend that plays Blu-Ray and just happens to play hidef games is a bargain.
Then again Mythtv has a powerpc port that isn't very polished or up-to-date, I have a feeling the devs will be all over this. I just pray that Sony or someone releases a decent binary video driver for it. Framebuffer will *not* cut the mustard on this kind of video content. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can install any PowerPC version of linux on it, princess.
You're pulling information straight out of your ass, and it's not becoming. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@princesszelda:
"You're attitude toward women is pretty disturbing. You have issues with your mom and you'll have a hard time with women forever."
Why use a contraction when a simple 'your' (possessive) would do? It's not 'you are attitude' is it?
Grammar aside, I fail to see how my inability to recognize your gender over the internet (regardless of a 10x10 icon with possibly your picture on it) lead you to such a detailed conclusion of the intimate inner workings of my personality. It seems you have a habit of knee-jerk reactionism that undermines any meaningful comment you might submit.
Try breathing for 10 seconds before responding. It helps when I'm feeling threatened on teh intarweb right before I post a flamefest, and I believe it may be of some use to you as well. Plus it usually pleases the moderation gods. - tawt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7But why are Sony so happy to let us hack the PS3 but do everything they can to stop us doing the same thing on the PSP?
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Last time I checked wasn't Yellow Dog a derivative of Red Hat/Fedora?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8About your second mismisconception, Sony has said Blu-ray discs can be used and will be mountable.
"You will be able to use the Blu-ray drive to mount all types of discs including Blu-ray discs!"

Clearing up misconceptions will be much more effective after a bit of research. - EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6msgyrd, if by "bombed pretty badly" you mean "sold every available copy in Japan and North America" then yes, the PS2 Linux Kit "bombed pretty badly"
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You can use any PPC version of linux.

You Sony fangirl, you. - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In Sony's official documentation released with kboot, it clearly stats that hardware video acceleration is not available because the drivers require direct access to the graphics card and they have a hypervisor guarding it... but I am sure they are working on a way to make it happen.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Common misconceptions:
- No, you won't run Windows things. WINE is X86 only. To run windows things would require hardware emulation(read hella slow)
- No you won't be playing Blu-Ray. Unless Sony releases a Binary to play it, which is very unlikely considering Sony's MPAA position on DVDs on Linux. And they certainly would never release an open source version because of their darling DRM.
- No you won't be playing fancy graphics unless Sony or Nvidia releases Linux drivers that will take advantage of the OpenGL capabilities. Although this one may indeed(and even probably will) happen, but Nvidia will no doubt keep the drivers in binary form.
This will be for hobby purposes or for using the cell processing for doing stuff like vector equations or server operations. - portwojc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To some users the choice of being able to run Linux offers a lot of options to them they may wish to explore. Like using the console to play multimedia files on the TV/Stereo, Games written for Linux, and even as a PC for them to use on the side.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol @ his response. He sounds like he hangs out with Ken Kutaragi and David Jaffe.

So he's saying it's impossible to run a PPC distro without heaving modification? Will he give anymore info? Or just call his users idiots? - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Certainly not to play music over their games...
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Xilon
The ps3 has usb 2.0 so you can get some nice usb tuners. They just cost a little more then pci. - rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not that useless - you can use the SPUs to do the 3D stuff. Remember that under Linux you are running off the PowerPC core and the SPUs, that can do the supercomputer stuff, are sitting idle.
- alanthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Xilon
If you have another MythTV box that has capture card(s), you can still get the MythTV client package and play videos on your PS3 thru Linux, much like the way Xbox Media Center can play media over a network. - SoCalChris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@distrbnce
Mounting a bluray disc is not the same as being able to play a bluray movie. - t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um... Your a little off. My laptop costs $1,500 and the ps3 ~$600.
- danielbermudezg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4oh god! please educate yourself!
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sony doesn't give a ***** about whether or not we use homebrew on the PSP. The problem is that (most of) the same holes that allow homebrew also allow for programs to brick your PSP. And you just know that if they were allowing homebrew on the PSP, we'd see a ***** of "Sony shouldn't allow programs to write to flash" and "My PSP was bricked by Sony's laziness" stories here on Digg.
The reason they'll allow it on the PS3 is because they have a hypervisor making sure that we can't do anything remotely bad like bricking it. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"But really, who needs to use Windows applications that badly?"
Seriously. The only thing windows is for is games... and I'll be using a ***** PS3. - bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Linux on this type of machine without hardware opengl support is basically useless. Wake me when Sony and Nvidia have drivers ready. And why in gods name did they choose fedora?
- Keloran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well its not actually Fedora (kinda like how CentOS isnt quite Fedora)
personally, im gona stick Gentoo on it, and use it like that if i cba to get a PS3 - fluoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There won't be hardware-accelerated OpenGL on it though. I already have a Linux PC that runs GIMP, Firefox, Evolution, OOo, etc. I don't need a PS3 to do all the same stuff that every other computer in the world can do. I wanted to buy a PS3 and put Linux on it so I could play with the graphics features of it. Also, in a machine with that much graphics power it seems like it should be a crime to not use something like XGL to show it off. :)
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For all you people complaining it's not the distro you want, or that it'll be watered down and crippled:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/PS3_Linux_kernel_patch_and_documentation_released_Any_PPC_distro_will_work - GuitarRocker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5does it work with fedora 6?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Have you actually read anywhere that there wouldn't be? Or did you learn it in digg comments?
- jtorque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would probably be possible to use qemu to transparently allow wine to run with decent speed. But really, who needs to use Windows applications that badly?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I sent this link (to digg, not the article) to the head YDL 5.0 developers.
His quote in response, "you all are idiots, have fun hurting your brain trying to get one of these other distros installed" (obviously not run through a PR machine first).
Seriously tho, Sony worked with TSS quite a bit to make sure YDL 5.0 supported the PS3 really well. The install is smooth, the hardware is supported, it just works.
The Sixaxis is even recognized by the kernel. - alanthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It should work with any PPC Linux distro, so yes.
- vlurk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, Yellow Dog is a derivative work with a lot off additions. Just like Ubuntu is Debian based also. You can read a very interesting article about YDL5.0 from http://arstechnica.com/articles/columns/linux/linux-20061018.ars if you have the time to do so.
I'm quite surprised that people give thumbs down (-4 actually) to someone who prefers another distro. I didn't even claim than YDL was better: just that I would still prefer it. Ok, maybe I should have told why. But since the question wasn't even asked, I won't. It seems like people are more interested into modding down someone who have different tastes than to understand why it is so. Well, I guess it just proves (one more time) than the average Digg user is close minded. It isn't like I hadn't noticed already... Just that I needed to experiment it before I could claim it myself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Wow, what a surprise here...a person called Princess Zelda (fap fap Nintendo fanboy/girl) with a negative opinion on the PS3. Wake me when it says something relevant to the discussion.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SoCalChris, Realyst, you're both right.
For some reason I completely glossed over the stupid idea of playing Blu-ray movies in Linux.
Like, why even bother?
I actually thought SoCalChris was talking about mounting and accessing the filesystem of Blu-ray discs, which would be useful.
Sorry for the confusion. I'll stick to watching Blu-ray in the PS3 OS. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i didn't digg you down. in fact, i'll digg you up now. add me as a friend if you want to see.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You see. So you dugg me down for nothing.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sweet, so everybody wins.
(in reality, that loophole doesn't exist anymore) - EV1L, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well I do not have a PS3 now
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use wine but you have to use qemu too and that will slow things down a bit. They were using this on ppc macs.
- noob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Linux already IS on the PS3, Sony made it so you just click a button and can install it.
Yellow Dog I think it's called. -
